Bruv wut
Aside from top 20, ranking's pretty loose |
50 | | Eminem The Eminem Show
Yeah so uhhh…. This is my favorite hip hop album. It miracuously remains engaging for its whole borderline 80 minute run time and it also happens to be Eminem’s most consistent album. It lacks a bit in terms of features but that only adds to the album’s theme of examining the Eminem character. A lot of his best production, rhymes, and songs appear on here and what really sets this apart from both his discography and a lot of other hip hop albums is a strong sense of songwriting. The hooks throughout the album really stick and hold up well with the rapping, the beats are distinctly hip hop while towing the line with pop and Em’s clear affection for rock n roll. His rapping and flow is versatile and delivers dense rhyming schemes effortlessly and never before or since has his vocal stacking been used so effectively. His singing here is pretty decent too and seemed much less like a novelty compared to records since this. |
49 | | Jeff Rosenstock Worry.
Depressed, Anxious, Stressed College Student: The Soundtrack.
I first encountered this one while in high school; I just really liked it for the music but weew the songs really began to struck a chord once I became a college freshman. |
48 | | Iggy Pop The Idiot
Cold, atmospheric, and drugged out. It reeks of Bowie’s experimental indulgences but it has that raw and loose edge that is distinctly Iggy. Mass Production remains one of my all time favorite album closers. |
47 | | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
Not gonna lie, this only properly clicked with me when I listened to this high for the first time. The production is incredible, the synths sound gorgeous, and Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a fucking cosmic funeral and eulogy. Everything about the album just comes together perfectly and what really sets this apart from their other albums is the sheer emotion and passion that the band put into it. |
46 | | The Beatles The Beatles
This album is the antithesis of what a good album (let alone a good double album) should be. The tracklist is bloated with the band’s very best, most mediocre, and arguably worst songs along with the band’s poppiest, heaviest, and most quiet songs and are arranged in a way that is so haphazard… Yet it somehow works. The only song I’d pick for filler is Wild Honey Pie and even then the song has a place… I don’t know why but it just does. Taking any song out, really, is missing the point of the album’s character. It’s the sound of the band falling apart and it’s wonderful. |
45 | | Deftones Deftones
The band’s heaviest and most atmospheric album. The guitar tone on here and Chino’s vocal performance remains unmatched in the band’s whole discography. The songs are just hypnotizing in how drugged out and repetitive they are. A shame this isn’t viewed more as one of the band’s best because it fucking is. |
44 | | Boards of Canada Geogaddi
I really don’t know how to properly put into words how ethereal, creepy, calming, and psychedelic this album is. It… I don’t know sounds like the album cover? Have some fond memories listening to this album during walks around campus at night, especially my first week as a college freshman last summer. Holy hell that simultaneously feels like such a long time ago and like it was all yesterday. I feel like that also says something about how I enjoy this album but idk what. |
43 | | Muse Black Holes & Revelations
Muse’s most accomplished album fucking fite me. The band effortlessly shat out their best pop songs and their most eclectic and creative yet cohesive and consistent tracklist. Really, the band struck a fantastic balance of flashy musicianship and mature songwriting. |
42 | | Against Me! Reinventing Axl Rose
I don’t remember how I encountered this album other than the fact that I discovered it thru this godforsaken website during my early years on here. Actually, I discovered this roughly the same time as In the Aeroplane Over the Sea because I discovered both of them with the tab where you could find lists that the album appears on. Something like that I don’t fucking know. But I do know that this is a fucking powerful album. Laura’s vocals are raw and passionate, the lyrics are fantastic, and the music just kicks ass. 8 Full Hours of Sleep never fails to bring the feels. |
41 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
The album that got me into death metal and extreme metal in general. Don’t know how but this album first showed up to me in the recommended videos feed on YouTube and I decided fuck it. I think anyone reading this list knows why this album is objectively a 5/5 and I have homework I’m putting off to write this list. |
40 | | Prince Purple Rain
It’s Prince. And it’s the Purple Rain album. It kicks ass and I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, or the title track. |
39 | | Patti Smith Horses
“Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine.” Oh my Lord what a way to open an album. |
38 | | David Bowie Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture
The Spiders from Mars was Bowie’s best live band and the energy here is crazy. I’m basing my opinion on the 30th anniversary remaster/remix and the sound is meaty, the tracklist is impeccable, and honestly I revisit the performances of a lot of these songs much more than the originals. Especially Moonage Daydream, holy shit. |
37 | | Alkaline Trio Alkaline Trio
I don’t know why but this and Maybe I’ll Catch Fire are the only albums for me that get better with the more bad memories I associate with them. Thanks to Onionbubs and Griff I incidentally got into this album when my alcohol addiction was starting to run my life (aka during my first finals week as a college freshman). Bleeder and I Lied My Face Off especially hurt to listen to now and it’s a great feeling. |
36 | | Ophidian Blackbox
Speaking of my struggles with drug abuse, I encountered this album at a very dark time in my life. There’s a couple months during my second semester as a college freshman that are a giant blank in my memory for me due to my struggle with drug abuse (there was more than alcohol at this point now). This album is fucking relentless yet versatile enough to keep itself engaging for its hour long runtime. It’s a rave straight out of hell, really. The fondest memory I’ve got of this was a long bus ride with a friend to and from McDonalds and arriving back on campus to accompany some other friends who were playing Doki Doki Literature Club. |
35 | | The Stooges Fun House
I’LL STICK IT DEEP INSIIIIIIIIDE COS I’M LOOOSE |
34 | | Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life
Bruv why is this album so good |
33 | | Placebo Meds
At the height of my addictions I exclusively listened to Ophidian’s Blackbox, Daft Punk, Pulp, and Placebo. I only remember this because these were my most played artists/albums when I started using Last.fm again because of Discord. Of all of Placebo’s albums, this one has stuck with me the most both cos it was always there for me and also because I think this is the band’s most consistent and concise album. Nothing in the band’s discography touches the run of songs that is Meds, Infra-Red, Drag, Space Monkey, and Follow the Cops Back Home. |
32 | | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Prepare Thyself to Deal With a Miracle
Saxophone Concerto is the pinnacle of jazz music… Words literally fail me to even describe a single second of it. |
31 | | Rammstein Mutter
Production is fantastic and the fact that the last half of the album holds up to the hits that dominate the first half really says a lot about the songwriting on here. Sonne is my favorite song on the album and honestly might be a top 20 song for me. |
30 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
BBF3 |
29 | | Ulver Nattens Madrigal
The album that got me into black metal. My initial exposure to the album was with Mayhem’s De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Darkthrone’s Under a Funeral Moon, and Behemoth’s The Satanist. Don’t remember what I rated The Satanist at the time but I had the Mayhem and Darktrhone albums rated a 1/5. I was this much of a metal noob at this time. Tl;dr a YouTube comment on Fantano’s Blurryface review was what made me listen to this album and I never looked back. |
28 | | Marina and The Diamonds Electra Heart
This was the album that converted me from one of those hipsters saying hurr duurr rock is dead and music sux now to being an avante-teen with a newfound appreciation for pop music. I’ve got a lot of fond memories associated with this one and imo a lot of her best songs show up on here too. State of Dreaming remains my favorite Marina song and was what got me into her (thanks YouTube recommended videos algorithms). |
27 | | Depeche Mode Black Celebration
I remember first listening to this around the time I was starting to get into Tears For Fears… Which was in 7th or 8th grade. It really blew my mind, it was poppy like TFF but dark and brooding like the angsty teenager I was. It’s Depeche Mode at their darkest and most morbid (tho it unfortunately doesn’t reach Blasphemous Rumours level dark and morbid) and it’s also the band’s crowning achievement. |
26 | | United Nations United Nations
I’m finding a pattern here between albums that have stayed in my 5s during my early years on Sput and have stayed there. Like this one. |
25 | | David Bowie Station to Station
Cocaine is a hell of a drug |
24 | | Daft Punk Alive 2007
Holy fucking shit this goes so hard |
23 | | Tears for Fears Songs from the Big Chair
Holy fucking shit this goes so hard [2] |
22 | | Talking Heads Stop Making Sense
Almost every song on here is even better than the studio counterpart, ESPECIALLY Life During Wartime. Watching the movie is a magical experience too. |
21 | | Marilyn Manson Holy Wood
Manson’s finest hour. A near 80 minute, 19 track concept album that is all killer and no filler and has hardly aged. Using this album to make a point about modern America’s obsession with celebrities and consumerism in a discussion board for my sociology class also happens have been my finest hour as well. |
20 | | Linkin Park A Thousand Suns
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/69629/Linkin-Park-A-Thousand-Suns/ |
19 | | The Smiths Singles
I was initially put off by the band because I never really liked their albums. Turns out I like them sooo much more as a singles band than an album band. This album best soundtracked my life, second semester freshman year. So many good and bad memories with this one here, exacerbated by the fact that most of my friends are also huge Smiths fans. A miserable band for miserable people. |
18 | | Jane's Addiction Nothing's Shocking
An absolutely fantastic rock album. Can’t listen to Jane Says the same since making a very good friend named Sergio last year. |
17 | | Refused The Shape of Punk to Come
Capitalism can eat a dick |
16 | | Pulp This is Hardcore
“And when you’re no longer searching for beauty or love, just some kind of life with the edges taken off.”
Hearing this lyric as an alcoholic hit me like a ton of bricks. Indeed, a horror soundtrack from a stagnant water bed. Given the limitations of these description boxes and to spare all of you the sob story, this was probably the most important album for me during this really hard time. To this day tho, the title track remains my all time favorite song.
This is the eye of the storm, it’s what men in stained raincoats pay for. |
15 | | Prurient Frozen Niagara Falls
One of my personal favorite vinyl packaging. Remember using this album once as a talking point for noise music with my songwriting professor first semester. Led to him teaching me how to make noise music using Reaper as opposed to Audacity. I just realized when the last time I listened to this album was… a lot of rain, tears, caffeine, and research for a paper involving anti-depression medication was involved. |
14 | | Today Is the Day Sadness Will Prevail
Someone hold me |
13 | | Esoteric The Pernicious Enigma
The CD packaging for the remaster/remix is hnnnnnnggg. |
12 | | Boris Pink
I once (somehow) accidentally fell asleep to this album. I ended up having an intense dream where I was in a car crash and I melted into the steel of the car as it was blazing and all fucked up; the long noise outro to Just Abandoned My-Self soundtrack this dream. 10/10 recommended. |
11 | | Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Although this album has dropped in place with my ranking, it will always have a special place in my heart. Listening to this album with a broken heart was a more intense/meaningful experience than listening to this high tbh. |
10 | | Sonic Coaster Pop Super Miracle Circuit
Prozac in auditory form. I’m not even kidding, this album never fails to make me happy and the songs just straight up kick ass. The soundtrack to this past summer for me. |
9 | | Mayhem Live in Leipzig
Best black metal album, there I said it |
8 | | Glenn Branca The Ascension
The Ascension more like The Transcendental |
7 | | Bjork Homogenic
The production and her voice…. Just pure bliss
Joga is a top 5 song for me |
6 | | The Cure Disintegration
This album used to be hard for me to get thru because of its length but now it’s hard for me to listen to because it’s so goddam depressing… Pictures of You and the last couple songs just hit so hard. Finishing the album is like returning to reality from a trip or like ending a journey after embarking on it, it’s so engaging and enveloping. |
5 | | T. Rex The Slider
I considered this the closing credits to a very bad time in my life. I finally moved out of my dorm and stared out the car window as my parents drove me home having ended my college freshman year. This and number 3 on this list were what I listened to on that car ride back… Wasn’t till last month that I was able to really listen to this album again and… my soundoff says all I could say for how much I adore this album. Metal Guru, Mystic Lady, and Ballrooms of Mars never fail to make me feel emotional. The album now soundtracks to a much more joyful time in my college career, more specifically a car ride out of LA from a Model UN conference with some fellow delegates that I’ve become really good friends with. |
4 | | Fleetwood Mac Rumours
Pop perfection. The only thing preventing me from calling this a full on perfect album is that Silver Springs isn’t included on the standard edition and I Don’t Want to Know is just slightly weaker than the rest of the album. |
3 | | Jon Hopkins Immunity
Wow I’ve really noticed a pattern here with the albums I chose for this list. Albums that have either stuck with me during my early teens or were there for me during the lowest points of last school year.
This album was there for me during the time when I tried to kick my alcohol and drug addiction last semester. Actually, it came at the time when I had no choice but to kick it because I became too broke to even afford supporting it. There was something about it that was just life affirming it to me, the bright and dancy beats, the immaculate production, the unrelenting quality. Not a single bad thing I could say about the album or anything that could have been better about it. The last song brought me to tears the first time I heard it. It helped me keep my head up a little bit as it did on that car ride back home. And indeed, things have gotten much better. |
2 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
This album has only gained more meaning to me with each passing year. From hearing it for the first time Sophomore year of high school, to both finals weeks Senior year, to making friends last year who also happened to love this album, to the road trip to LA a couple weeks ago, this album has been on the same life journey as me… Every song on here has its own story I can just talk about. |
1 | | Manic Street Preachers The Holy Bible
Yall saw this coming, cmon
I can’t believe it’s been 6 years… I don’t even know what to say anymore. The site’s practically been a part of like… 1/3 of my life now and even if I hardly comment or been active on threads anymore, I still go on the site daily. Really, I’m sort of a lurker now. But I ily all you guys here, and you know who you are when I say you’ve helped make the Sput experience memorable. |
