The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 3: Oil-Paper Umbrella

2 more people are out and the rest are in. Oh, and the late people are out too of course.
1Van Morrison
Astral Weeks

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is Folk. Anything from traditional cultural music to contemporary folk. Stop asking if something counts, just post it lol. Chances are if you genuinely think it's folk of any kind: it counts.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album they want and I'll listen to it no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find.***

No Now

“Those Who Can’t, Cheat” (Aberf)

Wow this sounds modern. The keys are bright and the vocals are passionate. I feel like this is very poppy, but in a pretty cool way. Is this what SHOULD be charting on the Hot 100? I appreciate the messy ending.

3.9/5 PASSED!
3Earth, Wind and Fire
The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 2

“Dance, Dance, Dance” (Minushuman24)

Simple and funky, though i’m disappointed that the bass isn’t really standing out as much as I’d like with funk.

3.1/5 PASSED!
4Abra
Princess

“Crybaby” (Sinternet)

This feels very 80s even though it’s modern. The trap snares are a sucky touch honestly, they don’t stick around too long though. I never liked that style of percussion at all. It’s inoffensive though, so I won’t mark it too low. Her voice is nice.

Signs Of A Struggle

“Big City Life” (Papa Universe)

Wow that singer is so off key sounding. The rapper sounds fine, but I’m not much for rap in most cases. The beat is barely even there. R&B with almost no bass? Meh, I’ll pass.

2.4/5 FAILED!
6Barbara Jean English

“Breaking Up a Happy Home (SandwichBubble)

Finally! Some deep bass and those trumpets are cool too. Her voice is as smooth as butter. The backups are nice too.

4.1/5 PASSED!
7Childish Gambino
"Awaken, My Love!"

“Me and Your Mama” (ZombieToyDuck)

Bassy as hell and those high pitched backups are angelic. The fact that this hit the Hot 100 is surprising. This song is kind of odd and retro in a way that works. I think I’ve heard it once before, but I didn’t remember that so you’re all good. Glover’s got a crazy spirit to him. He might be that part pop artist right now. This is so big production too, which is always a plus for me. Holy shit, that instrumental break. How did this chart again? Good song.

4.5/5 PASSED!
8Z-Ro
Cocaine

“Doing Just Fine” (NeroCorleone80)

The bass is good, the guitar is good, but I’m not big on rapping. His singing could be more melodic too honestly or at least weirder if not melodic? The groove makes up for it full time though.

3.6/5 PASSED!
9The Isley Brothers
3+3

“People of Today” (tyman128)

The robot voice is cheesy, but I can’t deny the power of that bass! The vocals are tip top too. The drums actually stand out too. This song is flat a pleasure to my ears. I may need to check these guys eventually... (album isn't in the database, so I picked a different one)

4.7/5 PASSED!
10Laura Nyro
Eli and The 13th Confession

“Eli’s Comin’” (AlexanderMR)
Wow her voice is all over the place! In a good way. I feel like I need to jog to this song. The piano and trumpet are pretty on point too. This would be amazing as the climax for a big hollywood movie about the 60s. Wait, that slow organ part… what an unexpected good turn.

4.2/5 PASSED!
11Marvin Gaye
Here, My Dear

“You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You” (Frippertronics)

Strategic move picking an artist I already like, but from an album I haven’t heard. I like bongos in funk. They’re always a good touch, especially if the song is slow and soulful. Gaye’s falsetto is pretty much one of the best things ever.

4.2/5 PASSED!
12Tyler, the Creator
Flower Boy

“Garden Shed” (BlazinBlitzer)

Very modern sounding production wise. The bass is simple, but it works. The autotune is gross as autotune usually is… This song seems like kind of like a mess. Not the kind of mess that is secretly super organized to be a mess on purpose either. I don’t like this.

2.7/5 FAILED!
13Maxwell
Embrya

“Luxury: Cococure” (JustJoe.)

This seems feels like its underwater and the strings make it feel elegant. I like his voice. Neo-soul is usually going to go over with me greatly and this is no exception. Good bass too, very deep. This super spacey section is pretty cool too.

4.3/5 PASSED!

“Candy Licker” (Thrust!)

10 minutes of an innuendo… good bass, but wow is this 80s. You’re so lucky that I’m immature as fuck and cracked up during this entire song, because this is kind lyrically awful. “Do you think they give a damn whether you cum girl? Huh! oh ya? well, baby I got news for you.Girl, they don't give a damn whether you cum. All they wanna do is go to sleep or smoke a cigarettes” Is this song a joke? Fuck… 5:33 in and the song is getting kinda old. ...Why is this song still going on.

3/5 PASSED!
15Anderson .Paak
Malibu

“Am I Wrong” (Masochist)

Funky! His voice just oozes cool, the bass is on point and those synths are nice. This feels like a modern take on the 70s style of r&b and I can dig that. At least more than modern takes on 80s stuff. The rapping part is kinda of meh though. The trumpets freshen up the song just as its about to get dry, good timing. Enjoyable stuff.

3.9/5 PASSED!
16Aaliyah
Aaliyah

“We Need a Resolution” (VuvuzelaBzz)

Soulful vocals that are very clear. The vocals has far less personality than Badu’s nasal rasp (which I love) honestly, but it’s still pretty nice to hear. It’s a pretty simple pop song, so I don’t have much else to say about it.

3.4/5 PASSED!
17Club Nouveau
Life, Love and Pain

“Why You Treat Me So Bad” (Bgillesp)

Oh my this is 80s. I feel like I’ve been anti-80s r&b all night haha, but it really does sound kinda off for some reason. Maybe it’s the production, but something about it doesn’t mesh with me. It’s also very minimal and empty. I don’t like this at all.

2.8+.05 (3.3/5) PASSED!
18Ella Mai
Ella Mai

“Boo’d Up” (TheSpirit)

Very poppy sounding. The bass is like non-existent here and her voice is very plain sounding. It’s harmless though, so I don’t hate it or anything. Also, link your song next time please.

2.8/5 PASSED!
19Janelle Monae
The Electric Lady

“Electric Lady” (RikRoach7)

Good bass, exciting synths. Her rhymes are on point too. Another modern person who’s doing the world of pop chart music a service. Yay more trumpets!

3.8/5 PASSED!
20Ravyn Lenae
Crush

“Sticky” (neekafat)

Wowher voice starts with the high notes. Coming in strong. Bassy as hell too. Weird vocals haha, but not in a bad way. This one also feels really modern, but in a way that seems fresh and interesting. Nice song.

3.7/5 PASSED!
21Akua Naru
The Journey Aflame

"Poetry, How Does It Feel" (Pheromone)

This may be hip hop, but it sounds like a poetry reading. That’s not a bad thing at all by the way. Wait, the title says it’s poetry! Hah, how fitting! Top tier simple and passionate bass and atmosphere. She’s awkward and confident at the same time, as if she was nervous to perform this, but ended up doing it anyway. The sax comes in at great times too. This might be my favorite of the night!

5/5 (ROUND WINNER!) (handicap next round of +0.5)
22Kenna
New Sacred Cow

“Hell Bent” (Grimlin)

The vocals are KINDA reminiscent of R&B, but I’d probably just called this a synth pop ballad. It’s close though, so no points off for missed genre. This is an umbrella contest, so unless you’re crazy off base, I’ll count it.
