| Dream Theater's first 8 albums ranked
My personal ranking for Dream Theater's first 8 albums. I don't follow them after 2003's Train Of Thought. I'm sorry but for me the band is a shadow of their past nowadays for quite a long time. | 8 | | Dream Theater When Dream and Day Unite
The beginning of all. Not so bad effort, but the most unequal. The Killing Hand is great, the Status Seeker is good and A Fortune in Lies is something between. Ytse Jam is... Ytse Jam and the rollercoaster begun its tour. | 7 | | Dream Theater Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Tool and Radiohead influences are the core of SDOIT. This is not bad at all, i say. Because there's no immitation here. Just good songwriting with touches of strange effects, like in Misunderstood, the best track of the album. | 6 | | Dream Theater Falling into Infinity
So underrated. Really. The "sellout" point of Petrucci's company is a strong album with some extraordinary moments like Trial of Tears, Lines in The Sand and Anna Lee. Very floydish artwork touches, thanks to Thorgerson, and a huge progressive rock feel in Shirley's production and Sherinian's keyboards. Sweetly different atmosphere than in other Theater's back catalogue. I wish that every "sellout" album of any metal band would be like this. Seriously. | 5 | | Dream Theater A Change of Seasons
Not so much to say. A composition candy for the ears, cheesy but courageous. | 4 | | Dream Theater Train of Thought
Straightforward and even thrashy at times, Train of Thought is the most linear album in Theater's carrer. It feels like they recorded it in a hurry while they didn't, which i like. | 3 | | Dream Theater Images and Words
Their breakthrough record. An album full of singles and majestic atmosphere, It lacks some lyrical depth but the band in that time wanted to show everyone what they were capable of. And they did it. | 2 | | Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Their best effort lyrically and conceptually. You have to appreciate it as a whole. Everything is top-notch, except, in my humble opinion, the use of keyboards in some tracks. They distract and create improvisations where they shouldn't. | 1 | | Dream Theater Awake
The pinnacle of their career. Angry stuff with equal doses of Kevin Moore's keyboard magics. Not so pretentious. Essential songwriting, even in the long tracks like Voices and Scarred. James LaBrie shines on this one, adding depth in the compositions. Even Myung contributes in the writing process with outstanding results. Epic. | |

09.23.18 | Man, Dream Theater have really fallen out of my mind. In high school, all I could do was talk about this band. I think Train of Thought was my favorite by them, but that may just be because the first song I ever heard of theirs was "Endless Sacrifice" | ElioG
09.23.18 | Yes, got your point. Many times works this way. For me, Awake was the first taste from them, 20 years ago. And to this day, for me it's just incomparable! | Ocean of Noise
09.23.18 | 1 is definitely 1. | beefshoes
09.24.18 | I got into them around the time of Systematic Chaos, they were my absolute favourite band as I was getting into and learning guitar (which was great for developing technique as a musician and a passion for theory), but by the time of BC&SL, I had gotten completely bored by almost all of their output. 1 and 5 have stood the test of the time, 1 has some legitimately incredible moments, but the rest of their discography is completely hit and miss.....and mostly miss unfortunately. | J() Alexander
09.24.18 | Ben Shapiro ruined the word "epic" for me. | ElioG
09.26.18 | Epic is eternally a word of Mike Patton. |
