07.05.18 | Risodo - other than France, Belgium and Brazil I’d hardly say the England squad ‘sucks’ in comparison to anyone else at the tournament. Kane is one of the top 10 most valuable players in the world and proving himself one of the 10 most effective strikers out there in international football right now. There’s a load of squads in this tournament without a reliable star player/goal scorer, rare as anything - that alone props up the squad ahead of half the sides who qualified for this WC.
Obviously if in form and fit Lallana and Ox-C would have made the squad and balanced out our attack with a playmaker and a skilful direct runner. It would have also meant we wouldn’t have been playing a half fit Alli. Still, if Rashford, Rose and Cahill are on the bench it can’t be THAT bad a squad imo. Central midfield is the weakness - but then Henderson and Dier both played well in the champions league this year, so there’s that.
Fact is all the squads of the ‘big footballing nations’ seem weaker than in the past with the one exception of Belgium (who weren’t really a big footballing nation back in ‘96-‘06). Yes, England once had Scholes, Beckham, Shearer, Sheringham, Owen etc all in the same side. France has Zidane, Henry, Vieira, Desailly, etc.
Those sort of squads aren’t out there now, game has changed, tactics have changed. Playing with one forward means less forwards in the big European leagues means less chances for flair players and ‘superstar’ strikers to develop. |
