Sharkattacks continental rec tournament

Not another rec tournament! So we are going to find the best albums from each of the worlds populated continents. I’ll take the first 12 participants and eliminate 2 people each round. It would be wise to try to cater to my tastes. I’ll give an example of the type of shit I like from each continent to give you a good idea to go off of,
1Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
From Her To Eternity

The first continent will be Australia! Home of funny accents and decent music.
2The scientists
Weird Love

Butcherboy

This was some cool rockabilly-ish type shit. Slightly creepy vocals that can get a little wild at times. The guitars are definitely the highlight of the band with the lazy rocker riffs but also sort of noisy. The drummer plays with a lot of swagger but they also play some beats that aren’t very typical for this kind of music. Really good but didn’t blow me away or anything.

At first I was like wtf? Super 80s production and goth-like vocals that didn’t seem to really fit the mood of the music which is pretty poppy. However, by the time the second chorus rolled around in the first song I was singing along like I knew the song my whole life. Every song here has a really good hook and the lyrics are awesome. The band is extremely tight and don’t overdo anything. It’s still a little too cheesy for my tastes but not so much that I can’t overlook it. ROUND WINNER

This album has been recced to me for like 15 years now. I don’t know why I never checked it out because it’s a fucking classic. I’ve heard quite a few of these songs from friends as this album contains many seminal punk songs such as the title track. It’s pretty no frills punk rock with lots of fast four chord riffs and fast drumming. I wish the vocals were a little snottier but you can’t have everything. A solid ass album no matter how you slice it.

Whoa is this Nick Caves brother on vocals? This album is very ambitious and lyrically heavy as fuck. It’s poetic but not pretentious. It’s heavy without being metal and extremely well-written. A plethora of noisy guitar solos are littered throughout its runtime. I’m not sure if this is considered their best album but I definitely want to check more of their albums now.

Papa universe

Reminds me of the stooges, especially with the cover of T.V. Eye. Lead guitar is great and the rhythm section keeps the songs rocking and rolling. Really catchy songs but not poppy. It’s pretty punk rock but with a big foot firmly placed in just good old fashioned rock and roll. Not many surprises but you don’t need any when the songs are so good.

I’m sure this is a landmark album in electronic music but it just isn’t really my thing. I like how all the songs bleed into one another. It makes the album flow really well. I fell asleep a few times listening to it. Would probably be more enjoyable if I was dancing while listening to it. Also it’s too long.

Damn my head hurts. I was very impressed by this bands sheer brutality. Very pissed off which is always good. The songs shift and twist and they never stay put for too long. I hate this drummer though. Too much double kick for me. It also ends very anticlimactic like. A little too core for me.

Ok so this band is obviously talented. Everyone is supremely adequate at their instrument. It’s progressive and ambitious and large in scope. That being said this record fucking blows. The clean vocals I’m sure are technically good but they just make me cringe. Such a long album to me as well. Well over an hour so this should not have even be acceptable for this tournament. I was just waiting for it to end. I subjectively hate metal so this was fucked from the get go.

Scream!

Really bare bones punk rock. Very enjoyable and it’s short length help it immensely. Songs about being broke always get a nod from me. I’ve been coming back this album a lot because of its simplicity and fun. Great record.

Holy shit this bass player is fucking nuts! Whoever it is they are playing some off the wall shit. A different take on post-punk than I am used to. The album starts to lose its magic at he end though. Still I’ll definitely come back to it.

Well I wasn’t able to find every song on this but I got the gist of it. Pretty cool white guy rnb from the 60s. Can’t really go wrong with that. The songs are usually about love and they are all short and immediate. I probably won’t clme back to this anytime soon but glad I found out about it either way.

This album is so wack. I just wanted to end the whole time. I don’t have much to say about it because there was nothing memorable about it. The songs drag and the vocals somehow make it even more boring. It’s just uneventful rock music that plods along forever. WACK.
