Structures from Silence

FullOfSounds

Well now this is much shorter than the first Steve Roach album i heard. “Structures From Silence” is an ambient space odyssey that is wonderful to kick back and relax to. The sound of this album is like stargazing on a peaceful alien planet. The synths just consume you and you’re lost in the cosmos.

Highlights: “Quiet Friend” and “Reflections from Silence”

Touched

Aberf

Abe once again continues down his shoegaze rec journey and hands me a doomy gaze record. Not entirely what i was looking for this round but i appreciated the drones and fuzzy atmospherics. ”Touched” is crushing and monstrous in size but possibly a little too repetitive for its own good. This was a great and heavy rec regardless though abe. I should prob note i listened to the reissue version, dont know if that’s a problem but lmk if it is.

Highlights: “Mutagen” and “

Going Places

Frivolous

This album gets right to the point from the start. What i find to be the most interesting thing about this record is that it is hard to define. There are drone atmospherics and post rock crescendos combined in what many would describe a noise album. “Going Places” is massive in scale and feels like the collapse of the universe is nigh.

Highlights: “Limited Space” and “Opt Out”

You pack your bags and hit the road. You don’t know where you're going but it’s probably somewhere out in the wilderness. When you get there, you set up and just look at the night sky. There’s something very soothing about this record. The album is mostly ethereal and calming; even when it takes on a more abrasive form it retains its glistening sound.

Highlights: “Conversations with Angels” and “46:50”

Ovrot

I was expecting dungeon synth from Ov this round but it seems he delivered a lovely ambient/idm record instead! While mosty electronic and synthetic, this album manages to be wholly organic and has a hint of mystery about it. It can be quite playful on tracks like “Born in a Tropical Swamp” but also more serious like on “Kingdom of Hearts.”

Highlights: “Leraine” and “The Realms of Sanda”

輕描淡寫 (Understatement) - 小圈子

We got ourselves a small one here folks. Clocking in under 30 minutes, “小圈子” is a shorty but a goodie. Synths, bleepy bloops, and rainy samples swirl together in a gorgeous ambient soup. The record is full of wonderful sleepy tunes making for a rather hypnagogic experience.

Highlights: “我昨晚梦见你了” and “捕夢網”

Sketches From New Brighton

Chortles

“Sketches From New Brighton” is an ambient album with a little techno and dub thrown in. If i was describe the tone of this record i would say it’s rather cold. There was nothing that made this really shoot above some other albums that are similar to it stylistically for me but it’s execution is fantastic so liked it anyway.

Highlights: “Hastings Surprise” and “Prairie Trains”

Traces of Weakness

Sniff

I don’t know why but the cover art made me think this would be more noisy. Kinda happy with what i got instead though. “Traces of Weakness”’ biggest asset is its progression of sound over its four tracks. A rather spooky first track turns into a glitchy and twinkly jam by the second track. The third settles for a more bassy vibe’n feel before going back into spooky/somber territory for the last track. As a whole the album was really nice but I may need to relisten.

Highlights: “Traces of Weakness” and “Levels of Chaos”

3.6
