| Trying to Get Into Music
Hello, I was referred to this website by a friend on reddit as a good way to talk to people in the music community. I consider myself a pretty well rounded person but I've just never been really "into" music. It sounds strange, and I guess it sort of is. But it isolated me from a lot of my friends because its such an unrelatable thing to feel. So about a year ago I went on an active quest to find music I enjoy, but everything just doesn't really give me any feeling of pleasure like most of my hobbies otherwise do. I made a Rate Your Music account a while back (advice from the same friend to sign up, I dont wanna share my account here but hint: its the same picture!) and through there I've found some popular albums. I notice I actually dislike some, and just feel nothing from others. To me this suggests that I'm close to finding my preference. I was wondering if anyone who felt the same at one point can offer me advice or perhaps give me some universally liked albums to listen to? | 1 | | Fleetwood Mac Rumours
Didn't mind that much I don't see how this is preferable to actually doing something | 2 | | Metallica Kill 'Em All
I was surprised, because I was warned that Metallica is for more experienced music listeners as its more unconventional, but I didn't really mind it. It just sort of made me feel strange, I wasn't getting anything from it and it gave off an angry presence. | 3 | | Radiohead OK Computer
So this is my reddit friend's favorite album, and he told me to listen to it 5 times to really appreciate it. I disliked it more each time, I don't really understand its purpose and just felt grating. I felt bad telling him that it was (at the time) my least favorite music I've heard so far. This website doesn't let me rate it with a 1 but I was told that this is a feature for a lot of popular albums. | 4 | | Bob Dylan Another Side of Bob Dylan
I actually couldn't finish this one. I'm not sure why, but it felt awkward and sort of like I was being talked down to. | 5 | | The Notorious B.I.G. Ready to Die
Here is an album where I felt conflicted, which was the most interesting thing I've found through music. I guess you could say I enjoy it the most? But I still would prefer to not listen to it, I found it juvenile and tacky. Almost too sugary, and I think I only felt comfortable with it because I've been subjected to a lot of rap throughout my life, so it didn't feels as jarring as some of the albums I found through Reddit and Rate Your Music | |

05.21.18 | How do you mean sugary with RTD? It's pretty raw and low budget | kevbogz
05.21.18 | I can't help a meme that thinks Kind of Blue is average. | Hawks
05.21.18 | Wtf | TheSonomaDude
05.21.18 | im a bit basic but Metallica is honestly the band that got me into caring about music. I fell in love with them during middle school and listening to them made me suddenly start dreaming about being on stage with a rock band, touring the world and shit. I picked up the guitar, bass, and vocal lessons all because of them, and I've since branched out into other metal bands and entirely different genres in general.
Kill Em All is a weird Metallica album to start off with unless you're already a metalhead...ik it's their debut but that album is the least mainstream and accessible thing they ever did, it was an underground thrash metal album when it first came out. | Drifter
05.21.18 | Who is your sput friend I wanna talk to him | Allergist
05.21.18 | You may like Gorguts - Obscura | Mentasm

05.21.18 | This is a serious story: A friend of mine is not into music at all and he is kind of a strange guy, very introverted, likes to be alone, that kind of stuff. It took years but the only thing I could get him into it was extreme metal. The faster, the better. | L4titudes
05.21.18 | I've heard stories of these folk | Drifter
05.21.18 | They scare me | TheSonomaDude
05.21.18 | i have a friend who is like you, he's picky as hell and 2.5/5's everything but he has wisened up to music much better in recent years. I talked him into getting a sput account, he never uses it but here are his 5's:

05.21.18 | Wow, I've only been gone for a few hours and this has gotten a lot of results. I really do wanna say thanks to everyone recommending stuff. I will try to listen to each of the things you are suggesting to check and post my feedback of it in a list later. To address other comments, hey Drifter, thank you for being so active. It is a tough situation and I'm glad people are interested in helping. I meant sugary in that its like eating sugar. Its just not appetizing by itself when you can just eat an actual meal. Probably a bad example but its what I thought of. My friend also told me not to mention him which is why I wont post my Rate Your Music account either, he doesn't comment or make lists here though, only rates music. I'm sorry kevbogz for thinking its average, but what I mean is that it isn't bad, so that is a good thing in my eyes. TheSonamaDude thank you for the indepth response, Metallica is very interesting in their widespread appeal, and I also didn't find myself disliking it. I will perhaps give it another shot, maybe it is a gateway to my liking that sort of music (I only heard it once). Mentasm, thats an interesting article but I sorta fear it. I don't want that to be me. I think its a radical thing to dismiss someone from your community when they are trying to learn, but I'm sure you have good intentions. Dewinged, I'm actually not introverted at all. I'm very outgoing and active which is why I want to like music, to allow me to better appreciate those sort of group activities. Like I said I will try Metallica again but most of my friends dont like metal. FacelessMan, that would mean don't listen to music at the moment! | Dewinged
05.21.18 | You know, after reading your last comment I would just explore more of the music your friends like, and if that really doesn't work... I would change friends haha | Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Seems like your friends are a bunch of p4k normies, I'd say start with weird underground shit bc normal music aint cutting it for you | SitruK6
05.21.18 | Morbid Angel - Covenant (not their best but it is the one that got me into them)
see if this does anything for you | Sinternet
05.21.18 | I have an old acquaintance from secondary school/college who was exactly like this and it was really hard to understand from an outside perspective, but I think it's great that you're are trying to do something about it! I'll give a list of a few of my favourite albums if you want to check them out - but when you say you find things boring is it just that they are monotonous to you? Also what other kinds of art do you enjoy, if you like poetry and literature you may enjoy more lyrical rap or albums that tell a story.
Anyway check these:
Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch
Fear Before the March of Flames - The Always Open Mouth
mewithoutYou - Catch For Us the Foxes
Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury
Ricardo Villalobos - Alcachofa
Big Pun - Capital Punishment
Burial - Truant/Rough Sleeper
that should cover a wide variety of genres and styles so you might find something you like out of that | SitruK6
05.21.18 | Good recs Sint

05.21.18 | introverted people who don't listen to music are like Daria with the only redeeming part of her extracted.. to summarize, i'm in love with you, let's get married and have a music-less ceremony.. | Calc
05.21.18 | you're gonna fit in just fine here | Piglet
05.21.18 | i second Brainbombs, you need to listen to Urge To Kill. it'll change everything
(: | IronGiant
05.21.18 | here are albums I think are so immersive they transcend "music" and become aural cinematic experiences. Sounds esoteric and maybe it is, but I'm thinking maybe a lot of what you're experiencing has to do with how your framing the experience. Do you enjoy a great movie? If so, thinking of the album as a movie, imagining scenes and pictures in your head that build and feed off the music may lead to more positive, or at the very least, more interesting, results. for that reason, I'm gonna recommend mainly instrumental music, aside from one compilation of some of the grittiest, sleaziest, catchiest 60s garage punk and pop I've heard, which may offer some reprieve since you can shuffle through a whole bunch of artists under one or a few genres and see what sticks. Anyway, here you go and best of luck:
Blade Runner Soundtrack (2002 ESPER EDITION ONLY)
Burial - Truant/Rough Sleeper [2]
James Ferraro - Live at Primavera Sound
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. I
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Various Artists - Trash Box: Wild Psychotic Garage Punk !!!
