Dedes- classics...pt.2?

I would like to make an apology to some of the people in my rec comp (underneath my original account, kingdedethefifth). Some dodgy shit happened with my debit info and so I've been changing passwords and creating new accounts to be safe and ensure shit like this doesn't happen again. I am apologizing because I'm awarw that I abandon a fair handful of recs, but no worries! I'm adding them here on this list (and I will check more if anyone wants them added). I will try and get through that next handful in say...the next 2 or 3 days? No longer than a week for sure.

Beatdown isn't a genre with a lot of, nay, any wiggle room, which I would consider it's crippling factor. Now, does that mean it has no potential to be fun? Of course not. 4 tracks clocking in at just over 12 minutes will say otherwise as they instill in you nothing but the most primal hatred. I'd say this is a cut above standard beatdown due to the presence of some nice trems and an especially gravelly vocalist (even for the genre). Not much else I can say other than this is a heavy, fun romp. 3.5/5.

I will admit, this took a few tracks before I really started to dig the vibe of this album. It starts off rather bright and funky, which I surprisingly enough enjoyed upon relistening (I say surprisingly since I've never been one for jumpy keyboard-ladeb music). This REALLY starts to shine as the album moves on however, eventually crawling to a snail pace through a warped haze in "The Overload". It's actuaply quite incredible the way this album flows from energetic African inspired funk to weird, ethereal...something. That's part of the greatness of this album- it creates these moods in a way that is distinctive and, quite honestly, ahead of it's time. 4/5.

This ep left me baffled. It's spastic but unfocused, diverse but scatterbrained. There are moments of uplifting melodies (Unbalanced Brutal Love) and moments of ethereal beauty (outro), but before all that there is a hell of a lot of over-the-top kick pedal and some...genuinely awful pig squeals. I find myself questioning- is this one big joke that I'm not in on? I understand that a slam ep about Long Live isn't something I should take seriously whatsoever, but even then this doesn't take away from the fact that this is an awkward mess where good ideas feel incredibly out of place. Oh, and I really cannot stress how much I do not like constant piq squeals. 1.5/5.
4The God Machine
Scenes from the Second Storey

Willie

Fantastic album. The descriptions of "alt doom" are spot on, as this feels like the sad mournful cousin of Jane's Addiction. It's starts off with a bit more menace, a bit more fuzz around the edges, which tracks such as "I've Seen the Man" biting and tearing their way through their own musical seams. Eventually however things smooth out, as the process of grief goes straight up from bitter hatred to immense mourning. I'll admit, the 17 minute behemoth felt like an odd addition, but it's hypnotic and almost drone-like effect does well in separating the two portions of the album (but not too hypnotic, considering the whirling sax near the end). After that came Purity which might be my personal favorite track. Last thing to note are the drums as a whole, since imo they're perfect. They're in your face, simple yet varied and honestly seem to give the album a slight bit of groove at points. 4.3/5, some of the best shit I've heard the last few weeks.

Panic In Solitude

The Jester Race

Man, this is a destructive album. Botch meets 7 Angels, perhaps? Whatever it is, it maintains a perfect balance of ferocity and brooding discomfort. The vocals are beastly, the riffs pulse with an immeasurable force and when the breakdowns come, I feel my balls slapped with the force of a thousand supernovas. This is all aided by the contrast that some of the melancholic, dark breaks provide. Yeah, this is prime. 4.1/5.

Sirloin steak

You seem to know me far too well, Steak. This is quite a beautiful album, carried by some absolutely ethereal vocals and light melodic guitar leads. The harsh vocals serve as a fairly powerful contrast, although in my opinion the cleans are absolutely what steal the show on this album. They're passionate as well as being absolutely gorgeous, and blend seamlessly with some rather nice guitar sweeps and atmospheric sections. The breakdowns are also fairly nice here in part due to the atmosphere that is laid over top them. 4/5.
Edit- 3.7/5. Grew off me a bit.
7The Stooges
Fun House

Cincinnati

My knowledge of punk is admittedly quite lacking, which is unfortunate being that the roots of most abrasive music can be traced back to it. That is why my expectations were definitely defied when listening to this record. I was expecting something incredibly simple with razor thin production and more 2 minute runtimes. What I got? An absolutely sassy rocker of an album soaked in nihilism. It's almost as if The Stooges took the hazy, drugged out aesthetic of the early 70s and filtered it through a more gritty, perhaps darker lens. The bite in the vocals, meandering guitar bits and THICC bass exemplify this well. Overall, this was cool as fuck. 4/5.

Album with too many fucking japanese characters

Skeleton

I had a whole write up made, but alas it was lost into the nether. This is a weird, chaotic form of weeb electronic that I did not know existed, and holy fuck is it wild. It's charged to the brim with energy and at times feels as if it's on the verge of a meltdown. 4.4/5.
9Built to Spill
Perfect From Now On

Bigma

This album is rather fuzzy and warm, which is definitely something I enjoyed. Still, I couldn't help but find that buried beneath this was a bit of melancholy that juxtaposes the otherwise feelgood vibes of the album. My favorite track of this album was easily "I Would Hurt a Fly", being that it's minimalistic and rather hollow vibe provides a perfect contrast towards the rest of the album. Also it's instrumentals are used in Cage's "Ballad of Worms" which owns. 3.9/5.
10Chief Keef
Back from the Dead 2

Bloonster

It's worth noting I know jackshit about trap, drill, power drill, whatever this fucking is. That combined with my prior experience with Keef made me rather apprehensive, and to an extent I was right to be. This definitely fell into the (trap)pings of having too many ideas with a little too much filler to remain thoroughly enticing, but I'll be damned if there weren't some straight fuckin' bangers. Maybe it's "Faneto" with that surprisingly ethereal and chilled out atmosphere, or the nice bit of bite Keef spits on "Sets". This album is definitely hit or miss, but I would still say the former outweighs the latter. Even with this in mind I really do have to commend two things- the beats and production. There is definitely a nice bit of diversity beat- wise and in almost all cases they at least make for a decent backbone, while the production is clean and crisp as fuck. Really, I just wish as a whole this was cut down. 3.2/5. (Oh, and maybe less "skrr's").

Broken Record

No one important :dab:

This album is pretty smooth and aside from a few moments that are, dare I say, relentless, is rather hypnotic. The beat sound like they're floating on clouds, honestly. My only real issue is I feel like the mc is a bit vanilla and that the music rides on the beats just a bit too much. Still even he has his moments, like the massive fire brought on "Regular Handshake". Overall this is quite good. 3.5/5.
12Shiina Ringo
Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana

Flipper tonic

This album is wonderfully smooth. Seriously, I feel like I'm floating on clouds in some sections. Shiina's voice is angelic and yet somewhat playful, even...childlike, at points? This is made especially interesting as she shows on occasion however that she can make straight rockers as well, where her singing has a bit of bite and sass. Oh, and of course I also have to commend the instrumentation here too. It ranges from ethereal to bombastic and does sn amazing job complimenting Ringo's voice. 4.2/5.
13Rilo Kiley
The Execution of All Things

Poopy

This album is warm, fuzzy, and has a nice bit of spring in its step. Not in such a way that makes it peppy perhaps, however moreso in the sense of that vibrant feeling of going on a long car ride with the best of friends in the start of summer. Anything with a sense of youthfulness is something I enjoy, and boy, does this album accomplish that characteristic well. The vocals here are for sure the reason behind this- soft and subdued, yet beautiful and reminiscent. 4/5.
14Blaze of Perdition
Near Death Revelations

Father galaxy

To say this is intense would be an understatement. There is a level of ferocity here that few albums can match, and yet I wouldn't call it feral or animalistic. No, the atmosphere crafted here is dark and oppresive, with occasional flashes of calm peeking through. I also greatly appreciate how beneath the thick, foggy haze there is a fair amount of intricacies. Technical but not flashy drumming, a plethora of guitar riffs that range from rapid trems to almost sluggish doomy riffs, as well as vox that, while generally are comfortable with a midrange rasp/howl, know when to add some variance (whispers, deep growls, etc.). Fantastic bit of black metal, will def come back to often. 4.2/5.
