Megadeth Ranked

One of the most important metal bands in the genre's history. Let's rank.
1Megadeth
Rust in Peace

After a slight slump with So Far...So Good...So What!, it's amazing that they actually made an album that matches (and in some instances, surpasses) Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?. With virtuoso Marty Friedman and the now legendary drummer Nick Menza being brought into the fold, this band released one of the best thrash metal albums ever made. It built upon the intricate rhythms and imaginative lead playing that was already present in the previous albums with even more compositional ambition thrown into the mix. Classic.

Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

Trying to choose between this album and Rust in Peace is utterly torturous but this is how it turned out for this list. Really, what I stated for for Rust in Peace's improvements from this album could also be said in the improvements from the debut to this one. The production was somewhat better, the composition was more ambitious and all the members involved were performing at their best. Hell, even the cover of "I Ain't Superstitious" is pretty good and a far better cover than what was on the debut. Essential.
3Megadeth
Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!

I don't usually see this album this high on the list but for me, it really is that good. If Energetic Disassembly hadn't come out the same year, this would have been the craziest metal album to have been released from a technical perspective in 1985. It's a speed-laden whirlwind of razor-sharp leads and complex rhythms and every second of it (barring the cover, I guess) is fantastic. Hell, even the more downpaced track on the album, Looking Down the Cross, is a highlight. An unrelenting debut.

Cryptic Writings

When I was first getting into this band about a decade ago, I had largely written off a lot of this band's output post-Youthanasia but when I finally decided to give albums like this one a listen a couple years and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not thrash at all but it manages to be among my favorite Megadeth albums despite this. The writing is quite strong, a lot of the melodies are great, some welcome complexity that provides texture where needed, Dave's vocals fit the album like a glove and every member finds opportunities to shine. A varied and compelling change in style that I wish was more representative of other band's changes in sound. A quality release.
5Megadeth
So Far, So Good... So What!

Their least consistent '80s album but it still manages to be pretty good. The opening instrumental and Set the World on Fire are pretty epic and so are tracks like Hook in Mouth, Mary Jane and In My Darkest Hour. However, there are some noticeable weak spots like 502 which bring the album down a bit.
6Megadeth
Countdown to Extinction

There are a couple of dull parts on this album but it still manages to retain the band's identity despite being more mainstream. Tracks like Symphony of Destruction, Architecture of Aggression, Captive Honor and Sweating Bullets are particular highlights.
7Megadeth
Youthanasia

This album and Countdown trade places quite often as they are both strong releases in their respective styles. Again, some sections could have been a bit more eventful but still, it's good.
8Megadeth
Endgame

A thrashier affair with some great tracks on it. It's a bit overblown, in my opinion, but it's by no means terrible. Besides, we're still in the good areas of their discography.
9Megadeth
Dystopia

Kind of mediocre compared even to Endgame. I like Mustaine and Loureiro's guitarwork and some of the tracks are good but some of the writing is really uninspired and the production does not do the album any favors.
10Megadeth
The System Has Failed

Another mediocre one with some decent tracks like Kick the Chair, Tears in a Vial, Blackmail the Universe and The Scorpion but other than that? Pretty forgettable, sad to say. Not what I'd expect out of a collaboration with Poland returning.
11Megadeth
United Abominations

This one is really dull. Nothing outright terrible but just mediocre with no real bright spots.
12Megadeth
Th1rt3en

This one's just bad.
13Megadeth
The World Needs a Hero

This one was really crappy. I see what the point of this album was but Dave and co. was just off the mark completely.
14Megadeth
Super Collider

Terrible but not the worst.
15Megadeth
Risk

This is the worst one by far.
