Metal: Cult Classics Pt. XII
Part 12 |
1 | | Atrocity Hallucinations
A record ahead of its time when it came out in 1990. As gritty and vicious as it's technical and complex. |
2 | | Mangled Torsos Drawings of the Dead
Death metal that's as high on the groove as it's on the ick factor - mostly thanks to the inhumanly disgusting low gutturals - that nevertheless takes a lot of strange unexpected atmospheric turns. Almost elegant in its morbidity. |
3 | | Therion Beyond Sanctorum
Before they made way for the opera, Therion actually did some interesting death metal that managed to be at once crushing and creative. |
4 | | Dolorian Voidwards
There will never be another band in metal that sounds like these guys. Tranquil ambience can turn into a psychotic uproar at any given minute. |
5 | | Forgotten Woods The Curse Of Mankind
DSBM originals. While they obviously took some cues from early Burzum, there's a distinct post-punk vibe lurking beneath the surface as well that weirdly enough manages to create an exceptionally eerie vibe. |
6 | | Liers In Wait Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
One of the most uncontrolled slithering web of riffs you'll ever hear. Lovecraftian without relying on cinematic bombast. |
7 | | Virgin Steele The House of Atreus: Act I
This time inspired on ancient Greek mythology, Virgin Steele creates another work of exceptional USPM. Truly one of the few bands that can get away with the added near-cinematic bombast in my book. |
8 | | Sororicide The Entity
A ghostly underground classic that may be the most expensive DM record out there, seeing for some reason the band won't allow a reissue (the bootlegs are great btw). |
9 | | Tyrant (USA) Too Late To Pray
A somewhat forgotten USPM classic with an exceptionally dark vibe for its style - thanks to the almost sludgy instrumentation and muscular vocal work. |
10 | | Solstice (UK) Lamentations
A somewhat different beast from its masterful follow up, but a terrific record all the same. Creating haunting melodies in its stellar doom riffs. The almost comatose often times out of tune vocal work actually adds to the swirling atmosphere as far as I'm concerned. |
