Sputnik Secret Santa: The Gift of 5s

a little late, but lets celebrate christmas early this year!
1Sleep Research Facility
Deep Frieze

Okay guys so here's the rundown:

Sign below to put your name on the roster. When we get enough people, i will pair you randomly with another user. You will "gift" the user you get with one of your 5s. Then once everyone finishes up jamming and (hopefully writing some nice blurbs/reviews/whatever), i'll reveal who had who. Kinda like how secret santa works. I'll have to pm/email you your partner, just let me know what 5 you want them to jam back.

The Ichthyologist

rigma

was rec'd by ovrot!

ichthyologist - It's pretty good, there are moments where the vocals really throw me off, like the gruff whispering on Sevengill and Emerald Bay. But nevertheless when the instrumentals leap they soar, like the final half of Blue Linckia and its swirling sax. I kind of just wish this were an entirely instrumental album to be honest, I probably would've preferred it that way. Overall though, decent. (3.40/5)

Blood! Guts! Victory!
Pretty solid melodeath that feels a lot like tech death. Kind of felt like TBDM but with a heavier and more epic feel to it. Like Arsis, but more engaging. Favorite track was Destroyer; fucking check it. (3.5/5)
8Rise Of The Northstar
Welcame

dctarga

was rec'd by nazzadan!

I kind of hate it but I can't deny it, the vocals/lyrics are dumb, and I hate the chugga-chugga verses but the thrashy metal riffs and solos are cool. (3.00/5).

It was decent and really good when it hit the mark but I felt as if a lot of the time it was just dead ambiance. East Hasting ruled hard.(3.00/5)
11PUP
The Dream Is Over

bloon

was rec'd by kris!

I can definitely see the appeal for this, as it's quite cathartic in places, but I dont think it does enough to keep it from being just "alright." While PUP may have extremely influenced the current pop punk scene, it doesn't do enough to make me fall head over heels for it. (3.00/5)
12Vektor
Black Future

kingdedethefifth

was rec'd by papa universe!

Black Future is very cold and calculated, transporting you from your filthy torn dorito- dusted recliner to an intergalactic battle of riffs. Really, the riffs fucking rule as does the tight and concise drumming and the...interesting vocals (think a filtier Dani Filth). Overall this rips. (4.50/5)
13All Human
Teenagers, You Don't Have to Die

mctime50

was rec'd by clover!

"Teenagers, You Don’t Have to Die" seems like a simple and fun romp through the world of indie and alt-rock—if you only glance at the album cover and title. Put on the first real track however, and you’ll be transported somewhere far more complex and grand than could ever be let on. All Human jump between piano crescendos and bluesy guitar jams effortlessly. Nothing ever drags or feels stale. Especially considering the 56-minute runtime, that’s one hell of an accomplishment. The album creates and keeps to an atmosphere so keenly, you can put the whole thing on repeat and be drifted away to the clouds for hours. There are no low points. Everything here works so fluidly that it’s no wonder someone would consider the album to be an absolute classic. It’s definitely found its place in my library and will be seeing many repeat plays in the future. (4.50/5)

It’s very bland outside of a few songs which were kinda ok I guess. (2.25/5)

Definitely could have been worse considering how much hard rock has aged for me over time, and there are definitely some great moments to be had here but overall it comes off as a little bit overbloated and the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired, still a lot better than i thought it was gonna be though lol (2.30/5)

Brother, Sister

dewinged

was rec'd by dbizzles!

I can totally see why this album would constitute a classic for anyone. Instrumentation is godly, production is insanely good and goddammit these guys know how to write music. My only qualm would be some vocal parts featuring a style I don't particularly dig but they are scattered so they don't bother me that much. Overall, a great choice, whoever picked this. (4.00/5).
17Rx Bandits
...And the Battle Begun

neekafat

This was like Panic at the Disco on steroids, far more adventurous and all over the place than I'd expect a pop-punk based band to sound. Could not get enough og it! (4.20/5)

Listened to the album a few times. It's pretty solid much like their other early albums but lacks that sense of panicked urgency that drew me to those aforementioned albums. The music is pretty and flows well against the thoughtful lyrics of the singer. It's a beautiful marriage that complements each other well and while I don't really care about the backstory behind the words, they still carry enough weight to be memorable And engaging (3.70/5)

This album is almost astonishingly dreary. It is absolutely staggering how little emotion or anything close to entertainment this manages to provide. With A Crow Looked at Me this guy at least had an excuse to be boring to death, but this is just absolutely dreadful. I tried time and time again, but it never did sit with me. Everything from the messy production, the non-existent songwriting, and the bloated and completely unjustified length, everything is just out of its place. I possibly could have excused it for being just a little bit hipsterjizzing like Neutral Milk Hotel, if at least it had any energy to it and not just phony explosive sound manufactured by the distasteful production. What really and truly dragged this all the way down for me were the inexcusable, mind-numbing vocals. The Glow pt2 is what your first band sounds like, and even then you at least don't pretend like it's a larger-than-life experience. (1.50/5)

Enjoyable listen, will probably revisit. The drumming was the highlight with everything else taking a backseat, by the end i was ready for it to be over. (3.50/5)

sniff

Thoughts in the order they appeared on first, and probably only, listen. Quite decent indie/post hardcore stuff but nothing special here in the beginning. Middle of the album was kind of enjoyable feeling a 3.0-3.5. Closing section was underwhelming this is getting on my nerves by now. Fuck christianity themed stuff is so annoying and these vocals are so annoying. And even though some of the instrumentals pull it together, they do in other parts feel as developed as the ability of critical thinking at a christian. This could’ve been decent enough if it’s done with done with finesse like mewithoutYou but for me this just falls flat. Plus for some neat instrumentals and the middle part of the album though. 2.69/5

Mostly mellow and occasionally heavy, but the attempt to blend the two results in an atmosphere that rings hollow. Kind of in one ear and out the other but it has its moments (2.90/5)

I'm really picky when it comes to black metal, and this album sounded very "samey" for its entire duration. It's more of an atmospheric black metal album, so I can see why the user recommending it would appreciate the dark soundscapes attempted by the band. The vocals, while impressive, were also very over the top at times and reminded me of why I hate Ghost Bath (2.00/5)

Nara has one of the most lovely voices in music without a doubt and this record is really comfy and somber and has amazing sound design... though if you've heard one Nara Leao record you've heard them all (up to a point, of course). Makes for great relaxation music, without a doubt. (3.50/5)

Awesome second wave black metal album. Although nothing particularly special, it hits all the sweet spots and is a great amalgamation of all the big bm bands from the time of the album's release from the atmospheric usage of synths to the hypnotic and repetitive tremolo picked riffs, it's an excellent album and would actually be highly recommendable to anyone trying to get into black metal. Oath Bound

YoAdrian

was rec'd by ovrot!

Oath Bound is the first black metal that I’ve ever listened to. I knew absolutely nothing of this band going into it and within the first minute of the opening track I was having images of Middle Earth battle scenes in my head. I have since learned that they’re a Tolkien centric metal band and they accomplish conveying those images with astonishing precision. Metal is not my thing so I probably won’t listen to this again but I’m glad that it was recommended to me and I’m grateful for the exposure to it. I think they have a very cool thing going on and while it’s not my listening style, I definitely respect what they have pulled off here. Very cool stuff. (3.00/5)

The Always Open Mouth

Anon recs to BlaizinBlitzer

was rec'd by The Sput Discord Gang, a collaborative rec!

This album should be set as a prime example of how to expand a signature sound without reaching over creative limitations or consistency interferences. In an analogy, The Always Open Mouth is like a perfectly aired-up balloon. All of the possible metalcore and post-hardcore influences are added to the thick air of its sound, but the balloon stays cleanly intact. Even for an album of these genres, the production is so damn raw. Maybe besides the drumming, every instrument, including vocals, is so diverse in ways made cleverly subtle due to the rawness of said production. The songwriting is excellent and the pacing is flawless. There are just a couple of nitpicks I have with a couple of the tracks and I don't think "Dog-Sized Bird" is that great. Despite that, this is one of the best albums of the new millennium and frankly one of the best I've ever heard. Skipping this is almost a crime. (4.75/5)
