| Black Mirror Season 4 Ranked
wot if ya mum ran on batteries
list is digs | 1 | | ABBA ABBA Gold
#6 - Arkangel
All hail the new king of the worst. Arkangel takes an idea that has already been floated around in previous episodes and makes it as dull as can be. I think Arkangel could’ve taken a much darker route (which this season needed more of) and turned out better. Have the ending result in mutual destruction for mother and daughter, or have the mother never turn off the Arkangel and turn the daughter into a mentally stunted recluse or something. Instead we get voyeurism and the weirdest/lamest climax event of the entire show. The ingredients for a good episode were there, but they never came even close together. 3/10 | 2 | | Fela Kuti Expensive Shit
#5 - Metalhead
One of the two big problem episodes this season. Metalhead’s reason for happening is dumb, the character herself does too many stupid things, the black and white definitely only exists to make CGI easier to do, and there’s not really any message behind it. Not that that’s necessary, but all we’re left with is an extended chase scene with a murderous Boston Dynamics robot. Best part was when the robot was like “Knife...yes…” and then twirled it around like a fuckin power drill 5/10 | 3 | | The Go! Team Semicircle
#4 - Hang The DJ
I put Hang The DJ below Crocodile, but they're relatively on the same level.
Hang The DJ is the spiritual successor to San Junipero, but with less of an impactful twist. Watching the two fall in love with each other only for them to pine over one another when a system forces them apart does tug on the heartstrings! The commentary on dating apps is apparent, and alright I guess. When the twist does come, it’s only the second half that really hits. Yeah, duh, of course they were in a computer simulation - wait, no, it’s for a dating app! And look, there they are in the real world! Not as important as San Junipero, but still a nice BM episode. 7/10 | 4 | | Taylor Swift Reputation
#3 - Crocodile
I put Hang the DJ below Crocodile, but they’re relatively on the same level. Crocodile gets a slight edge because...it’s fucking hilarious. Here’s this woman willing to go through such crucial lengths to hide one murder only to commit more and more in the process. There were so many points where she could’ve saved herself or stopped things from getting worse, but nope! She just spiraled into being the stupidest serial killer around. The whole episode can be summed up by the alien from Rick and Morty - “Oh boy, here I go killing again!” I genuinely like the characters of the architect and the insurance investigator, and points for using technology that isn’t quite a rehash of anything else the show has done. The fact that she killed four people to cover up a murder she didn’t even commit only to get fucked on by a guinea pig? Priceless. 7/10 | 5 | | Car Seat Headrest Twin Fantasy
#2 - USS Callister
What happens when you give a socially inept loner the power of a God? That’s what USS Callister is framed around. This ep. Covers a lot of ground but here, the main idea is how people act in virtual space, with no one to tell them off. Our antagonist, initially presented as someone to pity, turns out to paint a picture of the average, ‘power-mad’ internet troll who thinks no one can stop him - until someone does, of course. One big problem I had with this season is the amount of happy endings for the sake of happy endings. Hang the DJ was obviously supposed to be a spiritual successor to San Junipero in terms of feel, and Black Museum’s revenge was sweet. My only real gripe with this episode was the unnecessary ending of the antagonist getting stuck in the system or whatever. I wanted to see him rage and find out that his shit got all fucked up! 8/10 | 6 | | Chairlift Something
#1 - Black Museum
Like White Christmas, Black Museum is an anthology within an anthology, comprised of 3 short stories connecting to each other, and ultimately the story the anthology is framed around. Also like White Christmas, Black Museums twist is fucking excellent. The way they tied all the characters together wasn’t even apparent until the end, but it worked out so well and was so satisfying to watch the curator get his comeuppance. I liked the racism commentary as well - it wasn’t too hamfisted at all. My major complaint with this season is a seeming lack of new ideas - the ‘upload your conscience’ idea was in half of these episodes. And while it was alright in USS Callister, the way it was expanded upon here made it excellent. 9/10 | 7 | | Ani DiFranco Binary
Season Placement
3>2>1>4
Sadly, I’ve got to say that Season 4 is the worst season yet. So many old ideas that have already been done in the show come back, and when an idea comes back for the third or fourth time, interest wanes quickly. Twists don’t end up as powerful. I can’t see myself revisiting Arkangel or Metalhead ever again, something I can only say for one other Black Mirror episode. It might be best for the show to go back to working on 3 really good episodes per release. Six good episodes last season just might’ve been a fluke, because there’s too much missing in most of the episodes this time around. | |

01.10.18 | All time top 5: 1. San Junipero / 2. Hang the D.J. / 3. Be Right Back / 4. The Entire History of You / 5. White Christmas | Papa Universe
01.10.18 | I think you meant to say Black Museum on 6. | AngryJohnny
01.11.18 | I would tend to agree that this season was the worst while 3 was the best, although I liked Arkangel more than you and USS Callister less than most | gryndstone
01.11.18 | Oops, fixed the episode title. How would you rank the episodes, Johnny? | MrSirLordGentleman
01.11.18 | Worst season by far.
Black Museum was amazing and Hang the DJ is really cute but the rest is meh... at least when compared to previous seasons | YoYoMancuso
01.11.18 | I wish they'd get back into doing more horror-oriented stuff like White Bear | MrSirLordGentleman
01.11.18 | They tried something like that on Metalhead and it was the worst on the season for me | Doctuses
01.11.18 | best is U.S. callister by far. Black Museum was too disjointed and not cohesive, although I did appreciate the first story. besides US callister none of the other episode are above a 6. | alienobserver
01.11.18 | ppl rag on metalhead too much imo i found the cinematography beautiful. its definitely nothing special within the black mirror universe but i feel like that was a problem a lot of people had with this season. saw a lot of complaints about how this didnt have as many classic bm twists or any episodes that made u truly ponder their possibilities and implications which is unnecessary. i love that aspect of the show as much as anybody else but the audience was definitely spoiled to a degree. its unrealistic to expect that in every episode. i thought these were very good standalone episodes but like i said i can see how theyd be perceived as pretty mediocre compared to this shows other outings. | CygnusX1
01.11.18 | Hang the DJ is my least favorite episode of all seasons. Yeah it's nice and has a happy ending in the same vein as San Junipero, but it didn't seem to matter to me. I really liked San Junipero but Hang was just a chore to watch. Arkangel seems like the most tame of all the episodes (next to Nosedive) and might be the easiest way for people to get into the show. Black Museum is top 6 all time eps for sure, and USS Callister was probably the most fun episode we're going to get from this show.
I'd say it wasn't a bad season at all, just compared to the other ones it was lacking. | CygnusX1
01.11.18 | Monkey needs a hug | MrSirLordGentleman
01.11.18 | Monkey loves you | Ryus
01.11.18 | black museum is quite not good. not only does it feel like a shittier white christmas, but the story about the comatose wife was not interesting or thought-provoking in the slightest, and the twist at the end was an incredibly shoddy way to tie the story up | Clumseee
01.11.18 | Most hit and miss show of all time? | hasan
01.11.18 | it is things happen the world does change do not dont | gryndstone
01.11.18 | fuck dude it sure does | cold
01.11.18 | "3>2>1>4"
There's no dang ol' way Netflix BM can be better than Channel 4 BM | Deez
01.11.18 | Worst season yet agreed. | DungeonBoy
01.11.18 | Interesting ranking, but glad you gave good reasons for them. I only have Black Museum left to watch, but everyone has said it's the best of the new season so hopefully I like it.
I watched Metalhead last night, and I know I'm in the minority here but I liked it! The robot dog hunting that poor woman was pretty suspenseful. The way in which it had to come up with new ways to find her when presented with obstacles was really interesting. It showed how dangerous AI can really be given enough algorithmic problem solving capabilities, and spinning knife? yes please! | gryndstone
01.11.18 | I will give props to Metalhead for being suspenseful. It just bothers me, like... She poured paint on it so it couldn't see. Okay. Why isn't this a tactic they're all prepared for? | Risodo
01.11.18 | This season is so boring and predictable that after i saw Crocodile, i laughed so hard that my hand took the control automatically to switch to Big Mouth where the laughs are the intention. | RedRightHand
01.11.18 | Season wasn't lacking, and Callister should be number one! | MO
01.11.18 | finally getting into this show. it's hard to watch consistently cause it's pretty heavy. what's the toughest episode to watch? | Risodo
01.11.18 | @MO
The Entire History of You; White Christmas and Shut Up and Dance | DungeonBoy
01.11.18 | "..Why isn't this a tactic they're all prepared for?" are you talking about the robots or the humans?
Depends what you mean by toughest to watch. The most intense episode to watch might've been S1E1 because I knew nothing about this show and it definitely just throws you right into it a very uncomfortable situation. | cold
01.11.18 | @MO what risodo said, but I think the toughest is "Be Right Back" | alienobserver
01.11.18 | Shut Up and Dance[2] | MO
01.11.18 | ^ that's just it Dungeon I watched that one not knowing what to expect and I had a feeling the show would just get crazier from there. the theme of technology and all the wrong it can do leads me to believe there are probably some intense episodes | DungeonBoy
01.11.18 | right on, yeah most of them aren't as intense on a shock level, and I'd go as far to say that some of them are kinda boring. There are a couple happy endings here and there, but it's certainly not the feel good show of the year. I don't want to give anything away but the best episodes are the ones that leave you scratching your head until the end.. and you can't help but say, Ohhhhhh... | Doctuses
01.12.18 | shut up and dance [3] | TheSupernatural
01.13.18 | Toughest episode in terms of patience is probably Crocodile. It's just a painfully bad episode. Toughest in terms of content is The Entire History of You.
Frankly, the only episode of season 4 that compares well to previous seasons is USS Callister. The writing is really lackluster in the middle 4 episodes. Black Museum is good but after White Christmas it feels like a very recycled concept.
| Deathconscious
01.13.18 | Callister = Black Museum > Hang the DJ > Crocodile > Metalhead > Arkangel |
