01.03.18 | So if you tl;dr'd the summary, here are the rules:
1. Submit a song with the link and small write-up
2. The song will be added and assigned a day
3. On that day, we will all give the song a listen and rating
4. You can only rec one song until we've gone all the way down the line
5. There is no obligation to listen/rate/add songs, I want as little stress as possible here.
Hopefully this is fun and goes somewhere, but who knows! Let's just give it a try (: |

01.03.18 | Come On - Don't Walk on the Kitchen Floor (Post-Punk, naturally)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ywO7n8rrNY
This song has been on an eternal spit for a long time now. It is multi-layered and versatile. The guitar and bass lines are mesmerising, as are the raw vocals pulsating throughout the track. It's a hell of a dramatic experience that builds and builds, but never culminates, instead, like the Post-Punk great it is, it drags you into its atmospheric world of chaos and leaves you there, isolated and bitter. |

01.03.18 | As for "Wait":
I've never been much of a M83 fan, but the guy knows how to make occasional, but grandiose hits. "Wait" is just another on of those. It's as enticingly explosive as one could ever wish and what's more important, it keeps on going with that gorgeously massive tune and never lets go. Goddamn beauty. Deserved 5/5 |

01.03.18 | Gospel - "A Golden Dawn"
This is a 9+ minute epic from the (unfortunately) one-and-done screamo/progressive rock album The Moon is a Dead World. Not only did the production flawlessly master raw beauty and emotion, but all aspects of the songwriting are some of the greatest accomplishments in the history of rock music, hell, most of all music. The musicianship is absolutely phenomenal and the lyrics could not have been better delivered or molded into the production and instruments. There's a sense of misery in the lyrics that really strikes a chord with me throughout the entire song yet there's the slightest layer of hope in the lighting fast climax. It's a modern classic.
M83 - "Wait" is specifically my 9th favorite song of all time, and I heard about it through your rec on another song rec list. It's one of the only songs to make me well up in the right mood. 5/5, no question. |

01.04.18 | The Oh Hellos - Exeunt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB4ULHI0svo
Realistically I could've picked any track on Dear Wormwood because of the sheer charm emanating from every single one, but Exeunt to me is the perfect micro chasm of it all. From the get-go it draws you in with its playful nature: the mini-orchestra teasing you with every line, the strings following suit in a cute staccato riff that's bound to plaster a dumb grin on the face of anyone, and the boastful pounding of the bellowing bass drum. Not before long it all culminates into a proud hypnotic chant that quickly falls back to the organized chaos it grew from, leaving you with a glimpse of just how well the band is able to progress emotion through simplicity. It makes me very, very happy. |

Dear god, this has been annoying beyond comprehension. I am sorry, but listening to this is like Kero Kero Bonito on Barbie sniff-dust with a surprising amount of earache inducing glitteriness. Ugh. Sorry, it's just far from anything I could even try to like.

Kompys2000
01.04.18 | From the YouTube comments section:
"I understand why people might call this song a guilty pleasure, but the song is actually a lot more intelligent than people might first think. Hopefully I don't come across as too pretentious as I try to analyze it.
First of all the title is called Pink and Blue. Why is this significant? Because it refers to the traditional colors of gender symbols, the blue ♂ being male and the pink ♀ being female. This is why Hannah Diamond is depicted as wearing just pink on the cover, as she is meant to embody her gender role. This sentiment, of course, is also echoed throughout the song, as Hannah Diamond's persona longs for an extremely heteronormative relationship, without fully comprehending the value of love. In the chorus, the conversation she imagines having with her partner is "You say 'Baby how are you?' / I'm okay how about you?" It's all small talk-- there's no substance to the conversation, and there's no real connection between her and her partner. Yet, for whatever reason, this is what she longs for. Given that the song mirrors pop music, it seems likely that Hannah's desires are a result of pop culture telling her what is right, rather than Hannah coming to her own conclusions. It's why she's willing to rush into a relationship, since her only criteria is having "a guy that likes her too" even though she "thinks she likes him maybe". And the cold, glitchy aesthetic of the song only heightens the impersonal nature of Hannah's "ideal" relationship.
The song is definitely "art music" and post-modern. It calls into question the values that society perpetrates and the potential harm this could cause to people. And of course, the song itself is super catchy, even if it follows a very standard pop template. That's why I don't feel guilty about loving this song though. It's an infectious song made better by its willingness to question societal values and its interesting computerized aesthetic."

My rec will be Savages - The Answer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvvhHT0B5ck
"The Answer" is a wild and speedy 3/4 ride through the obsessions of sick love. Don't mind the moshpit full of hipsters in the video, don't be fooled with the lack of raw metal in a name like "Savages". The rage is there, the bile is there, so let that chaotic drumming take over and give yourself in to this song's abrasive charm. |

John Cale - Damn Life (Music for a New Society)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udCpoQ9kL3Y
Produced during a rough time in Cale's life, Damn Life and its respective album finds Cale scaling down to just himself and his piano, with a limited range of instruments included. Mostly a by-product of his cocaine-fueled depression, Damn Life is almost seemingly Cale projecting his insecurities and fears into a grueling paen to the person Cale is singing about (and of course, lifting the finale to Ode to Joy for the song's structure, albeit subverted to increase the song's palpable melancholy). |

on a side note here's my song rec is Melt-banana- The Hive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcqC8LSoBws
Raucous riffage, vibrant melody and pulsating with rhythm, The Hive compacts all the elements that make Melt-banana one of the most intriguing bands to ever come out of Japan. Melt-Banana flawlessly blend grind and noise rock with throbbing bass lines, frantic guitar riffs and high-pitched spastic vocals. The Hive is like the first time you tried a sour warhead, its an abrasive experience with a sweet candy center. You'll find yourself surrendering to its boisterous sonic splendor in no time. |

Did this really come out in 2010? It sounds like it could've been recorded any time between 50 years ago and yesterday. Overall, a very warm, comforting song sonically, but those lyrics are strangely dark... Still, I hate to jump on the "it's too long" bandwagon, but I definitely think a minute or two could have been trimmed off without much of value being lost. |
BlushfulHippocrene
01.06.18 | Oh man, Eyesore is amazing. I think it definitely justifies its length, that little bridge section and outro are marvellously hypnotic. 4.3 |

01.06.18 | Much preferred this version: https://comeonnyc.bandcamp.com/track/dont-walk-on-the-kitchen-floor (the YouTube one made me feel deaf in one ear), but that was so great. Really mesmeric/pulsating groove on that thing. Let's go with a 3.8, I'm excited to check the album. |

01.06.18 | Joanna Newsom - Leaving the City (from the album Divers)
The drums kick in at about 1:20 on this one, after which the groove is unrelenting: the interplay between Joanna, her harp, and whatever else is thrown into the mix is beautiful and jaw-dropping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keke7BGzJPI |

01.06.18 | Long Fin Killie - Godiva
Crazy indie rock from the scots, absolutely insane percussion mixed with some fantastic lyricism from novelist Luke Sutherland. I love this album, it's a crazy sound which I have never heard before and this song kicks it off better than anything else could have. It's cathartic, energetic and still sounds perfectly unique to this day.

01.07.18 | rating for Don't Walk on the Kitchen Floor: 3.9
I definitely dig the instrumentation, especially the guitar, but the vocals aren't really my cup of tea. I have super weird taste in singers though so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ |

01.07.18 | Don't Walk on the Kitchen Floor: Wait, was this made in the late 70's and released in '99 or was it made and released in '99? Either way, the production breathes hella life into this song and there's a unique punk/hard rock mix sound here with a lot to like about the instruments and songwriting.
4.1/5 |
Kompys2000
01.07.18 | ^Agreed, the production is pretty bomb. It was actually made in '78, they also did a remaster of it a few months ago that sounds even better IMO. |
BlushfulHippocrene
01.07.18 | After blasting The House that Heaven Built four times over, I see a glimpse of its greatness. I wish I liked it more -- I think I would if I wasn't so lame -- but for what it's worth, I liked it a /lot/: 3.5. |
Papa Universe
01.07.18 | The House That Heaven Built rating:
I'm a little torn on this song, honestly. I can hear it's fantastic. I can hear the striking musicianship there. I cn hear it all. But it just slips away by this much. It is definitely an enjoyable tune, but I just can quite keep tight grip on it. I don't know why.
3.5/5 |
BlazinBlitzer
01.07.18 | The House that Heaven Built: Kinda reminds me of "The Deepest Sighs/The Frankest Shadows" by Gang of Youths if cheesier and more generic. It's got a chock full of energy, however, and it definitely isn't missing an ounce of that. The singer and instruments are just revved up and ready to go.

ZombieToyDuck
01.08.18 | A little cheese to this R. Kelly track but not enough to be offensive by any means. The groove here was really mellow and the guitar melodies that come in and out with those funky bass bits blend really nicely with R. 01.12.18 | Fuuuuuuck I've been sick and busy and busy and sick and have barely been on Sput since Saturday and I'm just now catching up soooo
Step in the Name of Love- 3.4/5, cheesy in a good way. Definitely a groovy track, but I just can't fully enjoy it knowing all the messed-up stuff this guy did...
A Golden Dawn- 3.9, I'm not a big fan of screamo in general but this was pretty tight. The musicianship is top-notch, the song is well-structured and the vocals (again, I'm not much of a screamo guy) only dragged it down a bit for me. Still, the long track length made it feel like a bit of a slog- not nearly as much of a slog as it would have been in less capable hands, mind you, but a slog nonetheless.
Kumari- 4.6, where do I even start with this one? It flipped so many 180s it practically left me dizzy, yet somehow the whole thing managed to feel somewhat musically coherent. I literally laughed out loud when that trumpet solo hit after the first chorus, it was so absurd and out-of-nowhere in the best way possible. I honestly can't remember the last time a song surprised me this much. Also I can't find translated lyrics for this anywhere and it's driving me insane.
Exeunt- 3.7 this was really nice, it sounds like Of Monsters and Men, but better (And I like Of Monsters and Men!). While I admire their restraint in keeping this song so short, it feels like it would have been even better if it had had an extra minute or two to really build up some steam. |

I certainly appreciate the sort of weird, hyper-manufactured pop thing Grimes is going for here, but there's just something fundamentally annoying about this that I can't seem to put my finger on (same goes for the video). |
BlushfulHippocrene
01.14.18 | If you'll allow me to be a tad late: Silver Gallows 3.0 - I liked it a lot for a song I'd otherwise have no interest in (due to the genre, though I might fix that); love, love, loved the production so that might have had something to do with it.
Kill V. Maim 2.0 - ...I did not expect to dislike this, particularly because I love a lot of other Grimes I've heard. The chorus never quite hit me, and that's disappointing. Perhaps it'll grow on me. I hope so.

01.16.18 | Imma play a great game of catchup. Here we go:
"Kill v. Maim": I'm quite intrigued with the 90's pop vocalist influences, especially in the vocal production during the verses. The song boasts a fun and catchy hook, but I feel like the central beat would've been better on a slower track. It almost sounds sped up like it's trying far too hard to reach the pacing of the vocalist and the lyrics. Also, no more screeching, please? Thank you.
3.6/5
"Fake": :/....Why does the bass drum sounds like a goddamn typewriter? How do you fuck up production that bad? That being said, I don't really think it's the worst thing ever or anything. It sounds like it's not taking itself too seriously but... being awful is still being awful so it has that going against it.
1.7/5
"Bermondsey Stutter": "great little bit of sadboi folk. There's not much to it, but I'd say that simplicity really works to the song's advantage." [2]
3.9/5
"The Answer": This is a fairly unique and enjoyable song that sounds like a crossover between Chelsea Wolfe and stoner metal. As Dewi mentioned the drumming is absolutely fantastic and the first couple of minutes are indeed quite the ride. There is a lack of "evolving" in the song, however, that kinda irritates me and I think it's where the vocals and the instruments feel like they're set at a default and they only go past that a couple of short-lived times (check 1:40 to 2:00). It's still a pretty great track to jam.
3.8/5 |
Kompys2000
01.16.18 | The Answer- 3.8 This is pretty awesome, 3/4 is a very underused time signature in heavy music IMO. I kind of wish the vocals were just a bit more unhinged, to mach the ferocity of the instrumentation, but overall this is a damn solid thrasher. |
neekafat
01.16.18 | The Answer-
Yeah basically what Blitzer said, really good song and I love the vocals, but the instrumentation just seems to go on over and over again and really could've been way shorter tbh. Still, really fun song overall 3.7 |

Kompys2000
01.18.18 | The Hive: 3.9 This song has a lot going for it- that jackhammering main riff is fun as fuck, the glitchy electronic embellishments add a lot to the overall sound, the album artwork and video both look great, I think "Melt-Banana" is an awesome name for a band... Unfortunately, I also found the vocals extremely annoying, and those arrhythmic freak-out sections just destroy the momentum built up by the rest of the song (Which was probably their intention, but I still didn't like it). |

01.19.18 | Black Veil Brides - Shadows Die:
I haven't listened to these guys since we stitch these wounds, which was an album I used to really dig but this was way better than anything I heard from these guys in a longgg ass time. The instrumentals showing that avenged influence gave this a tonnn of appeal. Andy's clean vocals are still the weak point here which hold back the track and plus the lyrics are a bit cheesy. But overall sweet production, enjoyable instrumentals and i loved the strings and the backing vocals were nice little segments to add in here.
3.7 |

01.22.18 | "Leaving the City" - That was quite an excellent little track. Joanna Newsom is awesome at the vocals and that diverse instrumentation is so cool to listen to. The only problem I have with it is the song structure, but that doesn't disqualify this as a good track by any means.

At first I wasn’t really convinced by those vocals, but this is such a cool, cool, cool sounding song that the instrumentation makes up for how alien her vocals sound (which alienates me a bit but it’s just part of the cool). Lillet Blanc - Be New: I like the classic gospel influence mixed with the basic dream pop keyboards, guitars, and whatnot. The vocalist is quite good, too. It's well rounded with not much exceptional from that.
3.6/5
Bruce Haak - Blowjob: Lol this was actually fire. Although some people may treat this song differently than I do, this was a quality low-key and pessimistic self-evaluation. Might spin a few more time, like, damn.

Leaving the City- 3.2, I can't deny this is impressive from a composition standpoint, but I do not like her voice at all and the medieval vibe really doesn't do much for me either. Sorry Blush :(
Godiva- 3.6, not too bad at all, though it seems sorta nondescript tbh. Better production would have made it pop a bit more, but still, this was quite enjoyable.
Be New- 4.0, I'm a pretty easy lay when it comes to hazy, cutesy dream-pop, so I had a good time with this one, plain and simple.
Blow Job- 3.0, well uhhh.... that was weird. Not sure what I was expecting, but it sure as hell wasn't that.
Minotaur- 3.3, I don't much care for DM but this was aight. When this song is just thrashing on all cylinders, I really dig it. When it isn't... Not so much.
You Ain't Never- 2.9, could have been a pretty fun novelty song but those Jersey-ass vocals are a little too squawky for me. |

01.27.18 | Im glad you dug my song Neeka, rightly so cause it rips. |

01.27.18 | I have some stuff as well finally haha
Blind Them With Science-4/5. It's gorgeous and manages to build up in a way that is both climactic yet restrained. A bit predictable, but that's never been as much an issue for me as it is often with others.
A Golden Dawn-4.5/5. Aight this has the best fucking drumming i've ever heard in post-hardcore/emo and that is not hyperbolic at all. Also the organs don't suck. Wow.

01.28.18 | You Ain't Never: As much as I wanted to hate this, I'm gonna have to side with butcher on this one... Still more fun and enjoyable than half the post-punk Uni listens to. 3.1/5
Bonny: This is so so so nice. I might have to jam the whole album honestly, sounds right up my alley. 4.2/5 |

01.28.18 | Beaten to Death - Papyrus Containing the Spell to Summon the Breath of Life Enshrined in the Collected Scrolls of Sheryl Crow rating:
i can analyse this song all i want, the title of it will still be longer than anything i say. and all i say is: it's looped duck quacks on drugs.

01.29.18 | Sput being down has really made me slack on this (probs)
I'll get back to it tomorrow, I promise! |
BlazinBlitzer
01.29.18 | Prefab Srpout - "Bonny": This is a sweet tune with guitar playing that sort of advances itself from the locks of 80's production. Unfortunately, that production makes the song way cheesier than it has to, but I still get a kick out of that first half.
3.8/5
Beaten to Death - "Papyrus Containing the Spell to Summon the Breath of Life Enshrined in the Collected Scrolls of Sheryl Crow": You know, sometimes I think, "Man, this goes pretty hard." where others I'm like, "Wtf are they doing?"

01.30.18 | Puke SPit and Guts - lol! This was terrible and amazing at the same time, like I would really like to see this being played live. 3.5
Prefab Sprout - I remember changing the channel when these guys came up on TV in the 80s but listening to it now, this is a beautiful song. 4.0
Beaten to Death - Love the grind parts, not so much the slams. Nice arpeggio middle onwards. Growls sometimes are ridiculous lol. 3.8
Gama Bomb - Pleb beringing the trve thrash. Reminds me a bit of Suicidal Tendencies. Cool track. 3.7
NiN - Dino I love you man but this dragged a little. Some nice background at times but it felt overlong and oversimplified. 3.0
Buck-Tick - As the first comment in the link says, "this song got me pregnant". No, really, Buck-Tick can't do wrong. 4.1
Sum 41 - I hate this band so fucking much, don't know why, but this song is alright. 3.2
AND I AM DONE! ;)

01.31.18 | Gama Bomb: 3.3/5
Yeah this was some pretty damn fun thrash, was almost expecting screamed vocals so the clean ones were a pleasant surprise. The guitars are cool too of course, it just doesn't stand out too much to be compared to other thrash I've heard.
Zero-Sum: "Oooohhhhh this was gooood. I need to finally get into NIN someday." [2] I know I would love the shit outta them. 4.2/5 |

01.31.18 | Nine Inch Nails - "Zero-Sum" - Not the song I would pick, this is one of my favorite Trent Reznor albums. Underrated IMO: 4.2/5 |

Enshine - Cinders

The subject of songs that have made you cry came up on another webzine. First of all, Jari Lindholm is one of my favorite musicians - anything he does is gold. Secondly, the piano in this song is immaculate. Get's me every time. |

01.31.18 | Gama Bomb - Zombie Blood Nightmare rating:
Man, I love the drums here, but the song overall is just okay at best. It didn't really stick with me at all. Just the killer drums.

Nine Inch Nails - Zero-Sum rating:
Gotta be honest with you, folks. I never liked NIN. And this doesn't change anything.

Buck-Tick - Romance rating:
Gotta be honest with you, folks. I always liked B-T. And this is a great song. There is just nothing else to say about it. A fantastic contemporary goth affair.

Chrisma - Lola (from Chinese Restaurant)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oYuWoqOtBI
There is nothing particularly outstanding about this track, except that it is a ridiculously pretty proto-synth-pop tune I was unable to get out of my head. A gorgeous mix of synths and tangling acoustic guitar. And the melody is a damn classic. |

BlazinBlitzer
01.31.18 | BUCK-TICK - "Romance": The bassist is really impressing me and I admire the drum production the same way as "Kumari" from an earlier Song of the Day track. The production is a little too clean on this track, though. I was hoping for something a little rougher around the edges.
3.8/5 |
Metalrain
01.31.18 | You Ain't Never: It's supossed to be funny and raw, but it's just.... no. 1.7
Bonny: Really good tune, though it comes of a little to cheesy at some points. 3.7
Papyrus: All over the place, but not in the best way. 2.2
Zombie Blood Nightmare: Some good Crossover thrash. Doesn't have that much substance, but it's just so fun you don't care as much. 3.6
Zero-Sum: Just got into the band and have a love-hate relationship with them. If the track was a little shorter, i think it could have worked better, but it drags too much to get the real impact it needed. Good song tho. 3.4

02.01.18 | Papyrus Containing the Blah Blah Blah Jesus Fuck That's A Long Song Title- 2.4, it was kinda cool how they mixed some melody into a genre that isn't very melodic, but it just doesn't come together for me at all.
Zombie Blood Nightmare- 3.8, not particularly distinctive stylistically, but a whole lot of fun regardless.
Zero-Sum- 3.3, Reznor spices things up a bit with some neat production tricks, but ultimately there's not quite enough meat on the bones of this song for me to really make a meal out of it.
Romance- 3.6, I'd be lying if I said I this band's aesthetic didn't irk me a bit, but this is still a very well-put-tpgether tune, and I like the hints of new wave that make it feel a little brighter. |

Didn't quite blow me away, but I'll admit I was surprised by the grace of the melodies combined with the strength of the music behind them. I wasn't expecting to dig this (never really heard much Japanese rock), but here we are. Pretty damn solid song indeed! |
