| Scuro's Year in Dungeon Synth
Not strictly "dungeon synth", but this list encompasses most of the synth-y albums i enjoyed this year. There are some missing which I have yet to collect my thoughts on properly. Loosely ranked. | 1 | | RaevJager/Rabor Сказки Зимней Ночи (Winternight Fairytales)
Not quite “dungeon synth” in the traditional sense, this Christmas themed split arrived very early in the year and maintained its position of supremacy all the way through. As two of the more whimsical projects within the scene, these Russian artists have created a magical winter experience across both sides. Absolutely perfect for this time of the year. If you want to see me gush about it for a few more paragraphs you can do so here:

https://rabor.bandcamp.com/album/winternight-fairytales | 2 | | Fortress of Mystery La Rose de Fer
One of the more unsettling listening experiences this year, La Rose de Fer endeavours to slightly fracture reality with its incongruous melodies and eerie use of dissonance. It's difficult to explain exactly what effect this album has, but the cover art does a pretty serviceable job at depicting it visually. The castle in the distance reeks of evil and maddening chaos, repelling in every way and yet undoubtedly intriguing - a mirage that becomes real. I reviewed with one too where I did an equally poor job of explaining it in case anyone's curious, though you'd be better off listening to this one yourself in all honesty:

More “egyptian synth” than anything, this is the product of two French dungeon synth artists Balrog and ElixiR collaborating. I have an unusual love for the kind of middle-eastern inspired melodies on display here; those tones which bring to mind images of great pyramids, endless deserts, towering palm trees, and the silhouette of camels walking through heatwaves against an iridescent setting sun. All the best regional cliché’s. Anyway, if that kind of stuff appeals to you, you’ll enjoy this.
https://anubis-dungeonsynth.bandcamp.com/releases | 4 | | Old Tower The Rise of the Specter
Certainly the most traditional dungeon synth release thus far, this album takes many cues from genre stalwarts like Mortiis while progressing in a darker, more involved direction. Even going so far as to mimic the double song approach that Mortiis preferred, there’s certainly a real attempt at keeping the vibe alive from the micro-genre’s roots. This is a cavernous, solemn, and throughly dunegon-y album, and one that I know will go on to become a classic in its own right.
https://oldtower.bandcamp.com/album/the-rise-of-the-specter | 5 | | Neverlur Op under Fjeldet toner en Lur
Quite a minimalist effort here that really understands the importance of atmosphere over performance. Neverlur takes an almost space-y approach, with a lot of dawn out, repetitive motifs that speak of cold isolation. The Kittlesen artwork adorning its cover does a neat job of matching the music within, as the lonely, powder-covered building in the winter forest makes for a perfect setting.
https://neverlur.bandcamp.com/album/op-under-fjeldet-toner-en-lur | 6 | | Old Sorcery Realms of Magickal Sorrow
I haven’t spent enough time getting acquainted with this album as I would have liked to but nonetheless I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the old-school sound of this new project. Along with Old Tower’s contributions this year, Old Sorcery has delivered one of the best classic-sounding albums.
https://oldsorcery.bandcamp.com/releases | 7 | | RaevJager Raevult!
Leading with a bombastic opener in ‘The Crudade’, this album’s sound follows on from Rævjäger's previous work, delivering smoothly produced synthesised epics packed with smouldering harmonies and lilting melodies. As aforementioned, Raevjager doesn’t fit so snugly in the dungeon synth genre, as his work tends to be much more “epic” and “uplifting”, I suppose fantasy synth best describes it, but regardless this album is a lot of fun and worth a listen if you’re not after something gloomy.

https://raevjager.bandcamp.com | 8 | | Old Tower Ruination, the New Dawn Cometh
This Old Tower EP is really, really good and quite short too. If you’re new to the genre or this project and you want a good idea of what to expect then look no further.
https://oldtower.bandcamp.com/track/ruination-the-new-dawn-cometh | 9 | | Bond (BR) Ascension Path
This is just some straight up good dungeon synth, I don’t have a lot in particular to say about this Brazilian project other than to praise the quality of this release and hope there’s more to come.
https://bonddungeon.bandcamp.com/album/ascension-path | 10 | | Hedge Wizard Local Portal
Alright this is a strange one. It borders on…occult rock? I’m not really sure but this is quite the departure from the debut which many point to as the most standard example of what the genre has to offer and it’s the go-to recommendation for curious newcomers. Local Portal on the other hand, is another beast entirely. This EP features singing and a more traditional songwriting approach which takes the synths from brooding, droney instruments and instead uses them as stand-ins for the usual guitar, drum, bass arrangement. Hedge Wizard hasn’t abandoned DS altogether and his style still seeps through, but don’t expect much resemblance to the rest of the scene. Anyway, this is a really fun EP and I would definitely welcome more in its vein, even if Hedge has to leave behind his DS roots to do it.

12.28.17 | a ds list. woohoo. I've only heard about half of these. Will check 2. | theBoneyKing
12.28.17 | There's more than one dungeon synth album? | sixdegrees
12.28.17 | check burzum- daddy baldrs | Astral Abortis
12.28.17 | Nice list, that Old Tower album rocks. You should check out Mystic Towers’ albums from last year. One of my faves. | WatchItExplode
12.28.17 | This is a genre? Where should I start? | Astral Abortis
12.28.17 | Yeah, it’s basically just fantasy video game music from the 80s. Popularly picked up by white European teens in the 90s because they could make it out of their bedrooms. The kinda creme de la creme of the genre is Depressive Silence’s second demo - I highly recommend it. | Sevengill
12.28.17 | okay but is dungeon synth any good | WatchItExplode
12.28.17 | color me intrigued...and expecting to be disappointed | Astral Abortis
12.28.17 | If my description didn’t sound fucking amazing to you then you’ll probably hate it.
Personally it’s one of my favourite genres. | ScuroFantasma
12.28.17 | @seven it won't be for eveyone but if lo-fi synth music trying to capture the feeling of decrepit castles and dank dungeons sounds appealing you might dig it. This list probably isn't a great Intro, though a few like Old Tower and Old Sorcery arent a bad place to begin. I'd also rec early Mortiis and concur with Astral that Depressive Silence are an awesome place to begin too.
Also @Astral agreed Mystic Towers rule, if you dig that you might like Fortress of Mystery, same dude behind them both (unofficially) but they're quite different. | foxblood
12.28.17 | siick | WatchItExplode
12.28.17 | I could stand to add to some RPG background music to get me through my days, listening now. | WatchItExplode
12.28.17 | definately makes me wish that was my background to gaming growing up but don't know if I could listen on a regular basis now...done with that whole studying thing which this would be perfect for | ScuroFantasma
12.28.17 | Anyone interested in this stuff, I'll copy and paste a list I've sent to a few interested people with some good introductory projects. Don't get me wrong I dig the stuff on this list but a lot of it isn't very representative of the genre as a whole, lots of deviation from the more traditional sound.
Mortiis: http://downloadmusic.mortiis.com/album/f-dt-til-herske-3
The grandfather of the genre, essential.
Skarpseian: https://gv-sound.bandcamp.com/album/skygge-slottet
My first DS experience and still one of my favourites. Old school style stuff from Russia.
Depressive Silence: https://unbornprod.bandcamp.com/album/mourning
This goes by a few names, like Demo II or III. Great Intro to the genre.
Cain: https://cain999.bandcamp.com/releases
More winter synth but it nails the cheap, lo-Fi aesthetic.
Hedge Wizard: https://hedgewizard.bandcamp.com
More modern sounding stuff that sticks to the genre's roots.
Sysyphus: https://dungeonlorefoundation.bandcamp.com/album/auf-der-bergstra-e
More Russian stuff (though the album title is German).
Secret Stairways: https://secretstairways.bandcamp.com/album/turning-point
Some OG shit from '97. Poor bloke committed suicide a few years ago, these have only just been put on Bandcamp. From the U.S.
Sagenhaft: https://dungeonlorefoundation.bandcamp.com/album/the-legend-of-the-forgotten-reign
More Russian stuff, '98 this time.
Chaucerian Myth: https://chaucerianmyth.bandcamp.com/album/troilus-and-criseyde
US guy makes pretty lengthy DS/dark ambient/kinda jazzy albums based on medieval/early English literature.
Morketsvind: https://morketsvind.bandcamp.com
Guy does the whole old school sound really well, recommend. Russian. | Astral Abortis
12.28.17 | I use a lot of dungeon synth for D&D sessions. | Dinosaur
12.28.17 | https://nasgul-music.bandcamp.com/album/ash-nazg-durbatul-k-1996
I'll just throw this out there. pre-Grimrik | ScuroFantasma
12.28.17 | Nice had no idea he had it up on bandcamp | dbizzles
12.28.17 | Fu
cking
book
marked | Demon of the Fall
12.28.17 | Cool list. I need more ambient music in my life & maybe this could work. I already listen to (separate) music when gaming so this appeals in that sense.
I'll add Mortiis to my 2018 'to check' list as a genre introduction. | Flugmorph
12.28.17 | papa ov is proud | AsleepInTheBack
12.28.17 | Always a genre I've been meaning to check out. Bookmarked. | Dinosaur
12.28.17 | wasn't familiar with Dungeon Lore Foundation. That's a crazy good deal for a full disco. | Deathconscious
12.28.17 | Was never sure whether this was just a meme or an actual genre, i suppose i should check. | BallsToTheWall
12.28.17 | Anubis's description has me giddy. | TheSpirit
12.28.17 | Great list, I have a lot to check out it seems. Just recently started getting into DS myself. Some of my favs this year were Fief, Tyrannus and Ur Pale. | dbizzles
12.28.17 | I need to dig more in too. Really liked Hedge Wizard, but only listened to it two or three times. | Gmork89
12.28.17 | Check out Erang | hansoloshotfirst
12.28.17 | sweet list, scuro. | soymilk13
12.28.17 | theloserof08 | ScuroFantasma
12.28.17 | Thanks dudes.
@Spirit I liked Fief's III but only jammed it once so it felt weird to put it on here, not a fan of Tyrannus though, dungeon noise isn't really my jam (hence alder deep being pretty low here, sorry Ov). The Ur Pale album is pretty great too, idk if I'd call it ds though so I didn't include it, kinda more new age than ds but either way I really dig the nautical theme. And to be fair there's a few albums on here that you could safely dismiss as not ds too. | hansoloshotfirst
12.28.17 | did u listen to the latest Utred (not really "pvre" ds) release or the Barak Tor album ? | ScuroFantasma
12.29.17 | Nah I missed both of those, any good? | BallsToTheWall
12.29.17 | I nominate Scuro as user of the year. I'm voting for this beautiful son of a bitch net time the list comes along. | ScuroFantasma
12.29.17 | Awww < 3 | hansoloshotfirst
12.29.17 | imo yes. Utred is more on the medieval - epic side (pretty short / short songs, which appears to be a russian thing). Barak Tor is more Basil Poledouris influenced. (polished, sounds, a bit like the last Murgrind). Also I've been digging Darken Wood - III a lot lately and I listened to the Krampusnacht album during the holiday season.
Oh and no love for the new Thangorodrim? | ScuroFantasma
12.29.17 | Oh damn I completely forgot about new Thangorodrim good shout. That album was really damn good but it slipped by me in all honesty, only jammed it a couple times after it was released and never returned. I'll make sure to check Utred and Barak Tor, I don't think I've ever jammed Utred and the only Barak I've jlistened to was the three-way split with Raev and Splendorius which was actually really good. I half expected Krampusnacht to be really gimmicky and poor but I played it during a walk with my dog one night and was pleasantly surprised, though when it comes to christmas synth this year I think you know which album reigns supreme for me ;). |
