My Big 4 of Thrash

The first 4 are my personal picks, spots below that explain why they are not on my personal list.
1Megadeth

My personal favorite of the accepted Big 4, better songwriting, much more technically interesting (Marty Friedman is a legend), more consistent albums, and a better discography as a whole. R,I.P. is a classic, Countdown (almost) top chart success says something, and even though they've had 2 bad albums, the good definitely outweighs the bad.
2Metallica

Obvious pick. They are one of the best selling bands in Metal for a good reason. Their first 4-5 albums are absolute classics. However, the back half of their discography is really lacking in comparison. If they had ended after The Black Album, they probably would've been heralded as one of, if not the, greatest bands of all time, but they didn't, so we have to deal with St. Anger.
3Testament

The first discrepancy, but Testament is just such a legendary band that deserves to be acknowledged. Their first two albums breathed new life into the Thrash scene, with The New Order being the greater of the two. What really makes them special is how great they've been after the 90's. The Brotherhood of the Snake will, in my opinion, become a classic album, Dark Roots had some exceptional songs, and Skolnick is just amazing as ever.
4Kreator

Pure thrash aggression. These German's define angry thrash in a way that reminds me of Slayer, except better, and more consistent. Similar to Testament, these guys have consistently released very good material in recent years, with the very good Gods of Violence being a "low point" in recent (post 90s) history.
5Slayer

Influential they may be, but their last truly good album came in 1990, and it has been a downhill road since then. Even then, Slayer were very much a one trick pony, there is a reason a band is compared to Slayer when they don't change their sound. Slayer became stale, and influence can't redeem stagnancy.
6Anthrax

I just never really like Anthrax as much as the other bands. I wasn't a big fan of Belladonna's voice and they didn't seem to be as interesting as the others.
7Exodus

A band often cited as deserving of Big 4 status, they certainly had the talent for it. Having a steady supply of great guitarists should have been enough, but, in my opinion, they didn't quite have the same songwriting skill as some of the other bands. Good songwriting can save a mediocre player more than a great musician can save a poorly written song.
