DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Stopping at 60 entries, really strong year for individual tracks and a few surprises (Goldie? The The returning?). |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | So it begins |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | Well, this is just lovely. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks Unique and Boney, hope you find a few interesting things to check here |
TwigTW
12.02.17 | Goose Snow Cone is a great song, but 34 is my most-played song of the year (thank you last.fm). I didn't realize Goldie released an album this year. I'll have to check that out. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks Twig, 34 is definitely my favourite on the album, something about the pace of that tune is so perfect |
TwigTW
12.02.17 | yeah, love the crescendo at the end, powerful. |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | I'm assuming anything Whiteout Conditions by the New Pornographers didn't make it anywhere near this list... Stupid question, I know, given that you gave it 2.5. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | I really wasn't that excited by 'Whiteout Conditions'...but I'm someone who only has the Bejar fronted New Pornographers songs downloaded so barely a fan of them really. The first two albums are the ones I like most.
What's your favourite song on 'Whiteout'? |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | it's just that the t/t is probably one of my top 5 most played songs this year |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | surprisingly fantastic lyrics and delivery |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | I'll try again and then prob kick myself it should have made this list (this is usually what happens with end of year lists) |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | I particularly like the placement of Moonlight On the River, I'm in complete agreement that that's Mac's defining moment. Truly a monumental song. Love seeing Isbell in here as well!
I've only heard about a third of these which is somewhat surprising given I listened to more albums this year than I usually do, although several more are on albums I'll be checking in the next couple weeks (mostly on your recommendations ;-] ). If there are any other things here that you think I should definitely try now's the time to suggest it. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | The Boney essentials are still the Aimee Mann and Micah P. Hinson albums really, individual track wise you could check 'God in Chicago', the Michael Chapman tune, the Hundred Waters song (maybe the full album) and possibly The Cameramen.
Saying that there could easily be an unexpected one that grabs you here, I don't know if you get on with electronic stuff for example. |
theacademy
12.02.17 | interesting list (but full of fail)
welcome to the site feel like your taste will get better the more time you spend here so stick around |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | Aimee and Micah are definitely high on my priority list for this month, expect verdicts soon.
I don't get on with much electronic stuff but I'm always willing to try, what's the best of that bunch, song or album? |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | acad, with passive aggressive friends with backhanded compliments like these...but thanks for visiting |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Boney, you might like some of the songs on the Unkle album, as that's got a lot of indie crossover appeal and guest vocals.
Other than that...the Bicep song is really short so even if you hate it it's over real quick ;D |
butcherboy
12.02.17 | will be checking a bunch of these.. great picks throughout (Finn, mods, unkle etc.)
Lovely stuff, Doof.. |
Evenoss
12.02.17 | That Bicep song reminds me so much of 'La Vache' by Milk Inc.
Good list btw. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks butcher and Evenoss
Butch, are you thinking of doing either a SOTY or AOTY list? |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | Hats off Doof, those tunes were all quality - especially the Michael Chapman and Craig Finn which have me thinking I'll have to check the parent albums. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | The Michael Chapman is give or take all equally good if a tiny bit same-y taken as a whole...that Craig Finn song is easily my favourite from the album, not that the rest is bad at all. |
Dewinged
12.02.17 | Sonata!!! Lovely list doofus. And Whiteout Conditions is in my top 10 of this year. Def check it out. |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | I'm with Doof on Whiteout Conditions, album was in one ear out the other. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks Dewi - Sonata really grew on me, some classic tracks on that album, surprised me a bit |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | theBoneyKing: aggressive smh-age |
unclereich
12.02.17 | Jarvis cocker is still alive lmao |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Fourth - album is pre funny, check the tune 'Tearjerker' |
unclereich
12.02.17 | Will do always loved that blokes voice |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | If you've ever enjoyed Jarvis then you need to check it - sort of semi-sung narration delivery with lots of funnies in there. I reviewed the album here, slightly generous 4 rating but eh what can you do. |
unclereich
12.02.17 | Gotta 4 jarvis outta respect. Dudes a legend |
Atari
12.02.17 | 13 needs more love. Nice to see mountain goats here but paid in cocaine is prolly the standout for me (dat sax) |
zakalwe
12.02.17 | Nice work doof mate, there’s a few tunes here that I need to give a go. 8 sounds interesting. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks Atari, 13 was written off by the critics yeah, bit unfairly.
Cheers Zak, 8 I'm not sure if you'll like it or not, don't think you'll sit on the fence with it though, not a lot out there like it. |
klap
12.02.17 | Solid |
butcherboy
12.02.17 | Doof, I've been thinking of combining the two into one list.. Doing a top 20 albums with descriptions, and then running through some stray songs off weaker records.. |
Chortles
12.02.17 | good pick for 12. one of the best house tracks in years no doubt |
Atari
12.02.17 | The RYM average for that Andrew Hung is a joke. Should be at least a 3 or higher. This is coming from someone who hasn't heard fuck buttons but w/e |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thanks Chortles
Atari, 2.69 is a shocker, I guess people think he can’t sing |
neekafat
12.02.17 | The Chuckler is an excellent song, wish the whole album was that good |
doomes
12.02.17 | doof is a soft nigga, so no surprise this is a soft list, still good |
Papa Universe
12.02.17 | neekafat, lads and gens. when it comes to music, he's always half-right |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | I don't remember The Chuckler being a particular highlight from that album. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Chuckler and Male Plague are the highlights for me |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | Male Plague is maybe the worst song on it imo, the singing in that one is kind of grating. |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Ah, you see I like vocals like that, - my advice...avoid The Drones. |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | Noted |
BlazinBlitzer
12.02.17 | Ooohhh, 55 and 43, I like it!! |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Nice picks BlazinB |
brainmelter
12.02.17 | hey very nice picks man, im going to do a best songs of the year list as well but with more metalz |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Will look out for it brainmelter, haven't found too much metal I liked this year so some track picks could help me out |
cylinder
12.02.17 | 33 is my favorite from that album, so damn good. A pop song I keep my eyes closed for. And 3 rocks forever of course m/ |
Divaman
12.02.17 | Wow, loving that "Goose Snow Cone" was your top pick. Right now, it's looking like it will make my Top 20 Songs of the year as well. |
anat
12.02.17 | pleased as pie with my recs on here, especially 54 and 44 because i'm pals with the singers. also great to see 13 up there. lots on here i'll need to visit too |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | cylinder, pleased you approve, nice
Diva - yes, it has to make your top 20, such a great song
anatelier - all I can ask is you keep the recs coming, and I'm not giving too much away saying both those respective albums will also make my AOTY list |
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Thank you for saying, brand new user who also feels somehow familiar to me |
Mort.
12.02.17 | Oxbow as muttley chewing on a wasp is the most apt thing youve ever written doof. Be proud
|
DoofusWainwright
12.02.17 | Cheers Mort, thanks for recognising a rare moment of inspiration |
theBoneyKing
12.02.17 | Can't deny 3 yeah |
AngryJohnny
12.03.17 | Nice picks, good to see 41 here |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | AJ - that Everything Everything is a little underrated, the album itself will feature a lot higher on my AOTY list |
AngryJohnny
12.03.17 | yep agreed |
anat
12.03.17 | it's the best song next to good shot good soldier imo |
hadeserbonfa
12.03.17 | 5, 16, 23, 29, 40 would all appear on my top 50 this year too, some I would choose different songs from these albums. Some I've never heard. But great list, want to check some of it |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | Thanks hadeserbonfa, that's a fair amount of overlap, hope you find something you like among the rest |
ashcrash9
12.03.17 | Great list, Doof. 2 is one of my fave tracks this year too.
fwiw 30 is titled "On Another Ocean" though |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.03.17 | its nice watching your taste get more and more eclectic grampa
at the very least no one can argue that you know more about music than the average bear.... especially a geriatric one!
pos'd |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | Good spot ash, not a fan of the multi part song titles on that album so I'm blaming FF for that mistake
2 is incredible, I wonder how many people never reach it after getting turned off by the album as a whole? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.03.17 | 57, 46, 33
|
Ryus
12.03.17 | miami garden club is so good |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | Appreciate Pots, this year more than ever I tried to approach music with a total open mind, as few preconceptions as possible. Some real surprises, that might be even more evident on my incoming AOTY list. |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | Ryus, 'Miami Garden Club' will definitely feature high in my AOTY list, not giving away quite how high though |
Ryus
12.03.17 | "Some real surprises, that might be even more evident on my incoming AOTY list."
thot breaker #1???/ |
DoofusWainwright
12.03.17 | I'll give it one last listen before I put the list up...I guess not anything that unexpected ;P |
Poxy
12.04.17 | I'm listening through this list now having seen your comments on a lot of albums through the year and generally agreeing with your views. Really discovering some great stuff here man, cheers. |
DoofusWainwright
12.04.17 | Cheers to you Poxy, thanks |
Mort.
12.04.17 | go list to yowie you nelly |
DoofusWainwright
12.04.17 | I have once.
Verdict.
I need to listen to it again. |
Yotimi
12.04.17 | love 12, prob my fave on that album too |
OldCrime
12.05.17 | Cool list.
Mark Eitzel, Future Islands, Crystal Fairy and Bicep were the standouts from the stuff I hadnt heard.
Dont see why people like Destroyer. |
luci
12.05.17 | i like a bunch of these records but have a different pick for every one (save for "mercury") |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.05.17 | same for the few ive heard but mouth for that aparde album is a no-brainer so im glad we at least agree on that. and thats a fair choice for fever ray. |
Gyromania
12.05.17 | Lol you and i just straight up 100% disagree on favourite songs. I mean, time on her side is one kf the most boring songs on the album |
DoofusWainwright
12.05.17 | My favourite track on that one went 1st Aladdin 2nd Cave then settled at ‘Time on Her Side’. ‘Run’ is the one I feel is ever so slightly overrated, esp here, so prob your fave Gyro? ;P |
DoofusWainwright
12.05.17 | Potsy - nearly changed it to ‘Mama’s Hand’, that was one of the closest calls for track pick here. Most others were easy to choose really.
The AOTY list will have the songs I have at 5/5 stars listed under each entry this year. |
Gyromania
12.05.17 | Aladdin and through the roses for me |
DoofusWainwright
12.05.17 | ‘Aladdin’ is my second favourite, ‘Roses’ is decent too - everything up to track 8 is varying degrees of real good, then I’m a little less invested in the remainder, not that it’s bad or anything |
DoofusWainwright
12.05.17 | The top 10 all seem like the strongest off their respective albums, at least in the top two tracks in each case, a lot of them were lead singles too. Track picks are always really personal, that’s why the AOTY list is what I spent more time on/has more entries. Will put that up at the weekend, a few albums I need to listen to a bit more
(Hans Chew, Godflesh, not the new Prurient, etc) |
anat
12.05.17 | it’s hard to pick a fave for the far field but agreed hard on Aladdin, also love North Star and Shadows |
DoofusWainwright
12.13.17 | A few tunes impressed me the last week. |
DoofusWainwright
12.17.17 | Ugh, found a Top 20 song in ‘Country Figs’ - ultimate comedy ‘Kaputt’ anthem |
