Maybe tomorrow |
Dinosaur
11.13.17 | this guy funny |
robotmagician
11.13.17 | I really hate blast beats too. I just don’t get it, they’re be a great piece of music with just the robot thud-thud-thud of the snare. it just sounds band and i creative, and often pulls me out of the music. I do love a lot of black metal otherwise though |
FullOfSounds
11.13.17 | your profile pic made me think this was one of those alts |
Deathconscious
11.13.17 | Well at least he gave it more than a fair enough chance. Now he knows for sure it aint his cup o' tea. |

11.13.17 | "Needs moar opeth and MESSSUGGAH"
Those bands are not black metal to my knowledge lol |
rifkadm
11.13.17 | Lol yeah, well, there are valid useful reasons why he did this. He runs a genre-exploration club. 1 genre, 1 week. =) |
rifkadm
11.13.17 | Also Ars, I like black metal, but even I don't listen to that much. I have a goddamn headache now. |
someguest
11.13.17 | kate bush and ween fan doesn't like black metal
it took 15 hours to conclude this? lmao |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | "Lol yeah, well, there are valid useful reasons why he did this. He runs a genre-exploration club. 1 genre, 1 week. =)"
You summarized that a little too well
"kate bush and ween fan doesn't like black metal
it took 15 hours to conclude this? lmao"
I'm sure there are plenty of people who like Ween, Kate Bush, and Black Metal, but okay |
someguest
11.13.17 | Doubt it. |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | Hmmm I know KILL loves Kate Bush and is a metalhead... he listens to black metal, right? lol |

11.13.17 | Bm is best genre ever agreed. |
wwf
11.13.17 | why would you do that to yourself |
TVC15
11.13.17 | I wasn't a black metal fan at first either with similar criticisms. However, I already listened to a lot of metal (heavy, nu metal, alternative, thrash, etc) and I don't think you listen to enough metal to already have that base to potentially warm up to it even more in the future.
As much as I LOVE black metal, it really isn't for everyone although I'm glad to see you at least found some gems in those 15 hours. |
TVC15
11.13.17 | I have Hounds of Love and The Mollusk 4.5d and a bunch of black metal 5s and 4.5s... does this count for anything? |

11.13.17 | Ars did you try any Blut Aus Nord - they sometimes have a bit of crossover appeal |
Demon of the Fall
11.13.17 | Considering this is a really 'generic' list as you put it I've got some serious work to do... heard 3 of these bands :-( |
BigBlob
11.13.17 | problem with bm is 95% of it is just pure shit. but the good 5% is godlike |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | "Ars did you try any Blut Aus Nord - they sometimes have a bit of crossover appeal"
2 Blut Aus Nord songs were part of it, yes. |
DoofusWainwright
11.13.17 | You didn’t enjoy? Their stuff does vary a fair bit mind |
Spacesh1p
11.13.17 | Songs are not a good way to experience BM imo but I think you've determined that it's not your genre. |
DoofusWainwright
11.13.17 | Might have been better spinning two classic albums of the genre five or so times agreed |
cylinder
11.13.17 | Best metal subgenre |
DungeonBoy
11.13.17 | 15 hours is some serious dedication for something you don't dig. At some point along the way did you realize it wasn't for you or did you need an entire 15 hours just to be sure? |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | Okay here's why I did it:
I run this small music Facebook group (just under 350 members,) with about 30 active members, and the goal is to explore a new genre every week, and this week was black metal week. I make sure to listen to everyone's posted songs that fit the genre (there's a limit of how much a person can post so I'm not overwhelmed by it, and so people are more careful with their choices,) and I end up making a playlist including all of the songs posted within the week that are on Spotify.
Most weeks the playlist ranges from 3-7 hours, the longest up until now was 13 hours and 40 minutes (East Coast Hip Hop,) but Black Metal broke that record and i had a lot to say about it, so I made this list. |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | I like the idea because, while I still get to enjoy music of my own choice (Aerial in this case,) I still get to have a general rundown about other genres. |
TVC15
11.13.17 | Damn didn't know Doof can m/ what's your fav bm albums @Doof? |
Nazzadan
11.13.17 | Sounds like a good time :3 |
TVC15
11.13.17 | Also, Ars would you mind linking me the Spotify playlist you listened to? I'm interested to see all the songs you listened to |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | There were 2 Gorgoroth songs as well as others, but songs that weren't on Spotify obviously couldn't be on the playlist.

11.13.17 | Good on you for trying, at least. I'm a total Botanist fanboy- do you know what song it was that you listened to? |
TVC15
11.13.17 | Damn a ton of those songs are top notch. Think I might even use it whenever I get the bm itch and can't decide on what band I wanna jam. Thanks Ars! |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | There 19 playlists like that so far. My favorite is the psychedelic rock one. |
ArsMoriendi
11.13.17 | It's only 9 and a half hours though. |

11.14.17 | It is truly impressive. A feat to say the least. |
TVC15
11.14.17 | Forgot if the band appeared in the spotify playlist, but I rec'd these guys to you before Ars and although they are labeled black metal, it isn't one of their more prominent influences, I think. Hail Spirit Noir - Mayhem in Blue; Mr. Bungle weirdness mixed with psychedelic prog with bm inspired vox and ocassionally shows thru with their riffs. Way more stomachable than a lot of the stuff you've heard but I'd dig if you're kinda sick of the genre at this point. |
Bismark
11.14.17 | fuck idk if i could listen to this much black metal honestly. its really not for me lol |
DungeonBoy
11.14.17 | I don't think I could listen to 15 hours of any genre that I don't enjoy |

11.14.17 | Hmmm it wasn't THAT hard. It's not like this is crunkcore. |
zaruyache
11.14.17 | Kudos to you for trying, though, and being fairly objective about it. |
ArsMoriendi
11.14.17 | "also did you quote yourself for your review name"

11.15.17 | Who made the list for you Ars?
You're not really any kind of metal fan are you? |
ArsMoriendi
11.15.17 | I like some alt metal and a little bit of industrial metal and Sabbath, but outside of that, nah |
robotmagician
11.15.17 | TVC, that description reminds of this band dreadnought that I found on bandcamp the other day. holy hell they are good. some harsh vocals but mostly cleans, very proggy and jazz influenced. their bandcamp has a description that says “think joni mitchell guesting with WITTR” I cant stop listening to their last two albums |
robotmagician
11.15.17 | haha. their guitarist/singer also plays the flute, their drummer plays the saxophone, and their bassist also plays the mandolin. I highly recommend checking them out, it works really well together
this is the 2015 album, they just released another one last month dreadnoughtdenver.bandcamp.com/album/bridging-realms |

11.18.17 | devoting that much time straight to one specific genre is stupid and will of course lead to you to grow a disdain for that genre, you should've just done like 1 hour spans with some kate bush interspersed. amateur up in here |

That band is more interested in dressing weird than actually sounding weird anyway |

I get that you think that when you personally don't like something that it means it's objectively shit, but I don't feel like that about most music even if I personally hate it |
ArsMoriendi
11.19.17 | Like can't you passionately hate a song, but still understand why people might love it, and then not judge them harshly for it? Why are you so judgmental? |

props for attempting to get some enjoyment out of a genre you know you're not a fan of; always good to test ones tastes.
I'd certainly recommend giving 3 a go in full if you havent already. Works well as a full album experience and it isn't the most bm of bm albums. I love it, and I'm not massive on the genre at all |

ArsMoriendi
12.06.17 | "is ween a joke band?"
Not really. I mean a large portion of their songs are humorous, but it really ranges in emotion from song to song. They don't take things too seriously most of the time (which I appreciate, since lighthearted approaches are far easier for me to connect with.) It's also why it really hits emotionally for me when they do get serious because it sounds important to them, so important that they put aside their usual lighthearted approach to get heavy. So I'd just describe them as a fun, adventurous and occasionally depressing band.
The best parts are on their early albums where you can hear them cracking up while singing because it shows how much they enjoying making the music |
ArsMoriendi
12.06.17 | Also yeah U.S. Maple is good, but from the 1 album I know by them, they could stand to diversify their song writing a bit, hopefully their other albums do do that
Long Hair in Three Stages is a solid 4/5 though |
