| A Mostly 3.5 October | 1 | | Dinosaur Jr. Beyond
[Indie rock/noise rock]
Enjoyable with some wonderful highlights, but most of it is only "good."
Favorite: "What If I Knew"
Least Favorite: "Been There All the Time"
3.5/5 | 2 | | Funkadelic Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow
[Funk]
It's okay, but just listen to Maggot Brain an then try to tell me they're even close in quality...
Favorite: "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow"
Least Favorite: "Friday Night, August 14th"
3/5 | 3 | | Beck Colors
[Pop rock/indie pop]
Much better than most people are saying, but also not too huge of a standout.
Favorite: "Colors"
Least Favorite: "Dreams"
3.5/5 | 4 | | The Knife Deep Cuts
[Synthpop]
While it has its moments, it's a straight up pop album most of the time. Clearly this was before The Knife was ready to truly get weird. It's really listenable pop though.
Favorite: "You Take My Breath Away"
Least Favorite: "Listen Now"
3.5/5 | 5 | | Dead Can Dance Spleen and Ideal
[Neoclassical darkwave/post punk]
This is not nearly as good as Within the Realm, but the highlights are pretty much on the same level. I feel like the guy vocal stands out here more, which is like the opposite of Within the Realm.
Favorite: "The Cardinal Sin"
Least Favorite: "Ascension"
3.5/5 | 6 | | Lana Del Rey Ultraviolence
[Indie pop/dream pop]
I do this "Album of the Month" thingy in this group and this was that album. Meh.
Favorite: "Shades of Cool"
Least Favorite: "Money Power Glory"
2.5/5 | 7 | | The Pop Group Y
[Post punk/funk]
Upon first listen I was amazing, upon 2nd, 3rd, and 4th listen I was frustrated with how plain the songs ended up sounding. It's like an anti-grower. 2 tracks stayed amazing though.
Favorite: "Thief of Fire"
Least Favorite: "Blood Money"
3/5 | 8 | | The Pop Group For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?
[Post punk/funk]
This one was more focused and upbeat, but still kind of plain...
Favorite: "Forces of Oppression"
Least Favorite: "Communicate"
3/5 | 9 | | Fever Ray Plunge
[Electronic pop/whatever else Karin feels like being]
This was a pleasant surprise. Sure the s/t is better, but barely. I'm impressed, but I expected as much from Fever Ray.
Favorite: "IDK About You
Least Favorite: "Falling"

11.03.17 | 'Deep Cuts' behind the new Fever Ray AND same score as the new Beck? To me it's easily the superior release, you say 'straight up pop' like it's a little disappointing but then forgive the awful new Beck album which is straight up pop that can only dream of a 'Heartbeats' or 'Pass This On' (I mean that's not even a contest surely?). Also, 'Deep Cuts' is still pretty strange as a pop album a lot of the time for me ('Listen Now'...'You Make Me Like Charity'...can't think of too much in 2003 that sounded quite like that). The Pearl Jam instrumental dedication (?) on the album is odd though.
List is definitely evidence you targeted the wrong albums this month, to not find a 4.5-5 is a bit of a failed endeavour :/ | ArsMoriendi
11.03.17 | "'Deep Cuts' behind the new Fever Ray" EASILY, new Fever Ray rules.
"AND same score as the new Beck?" Pretty much, my opinion of both is actually rather similar
"you say 'straight up pop' like it's a little disappointing but then forgive the awful new Beck album which is straight up pop that can only dream of a 'Heartbeats' or 'Pass This On' (I mean that's not even a contest surely?)"
Both I describe as "pretty good pop albums, but nothing mindblowing" so yea 3.5's. Also, I don't like "Pass This On" that much, it's easily the weakest of the 4 singles ("Heartbeats", "You Take My Breath Away" and "Rock Classics" are all WAY better.) Honestly, only 4 songs on Deep Cuts were really super impressive anyway, most of it was just catchy dance music or failed experiments. You saying the new Beck is awful is your opinion anyway, why are you projecting your opinion onto me?
"Listen Now" and "You Make Me Like Charity" were among some of my least favorites with the former being boring as hell and the latter being kind of grating... I'm not going to pretend they come even close to anything on Silent Shout, Plunge, or anything else post Deep Cuts. | SandwichBubble
11.03.17 | 9 is weak sauce and 3 is worst of the year contender, but at least you liked pop group :) | ArsMoriendi
11.03.17 | Ultimately, I didn't really like The Pop Group that much, they just scraped by with a 3 for both albums. Their have a huge "still forgettable after 4 listens" problem despite both sounding pretty good | DoofusWainwright
11.03.17 | 'Silent Shout' is superior to anything else associated to The Knife, on that we're in total agreement. The second half of the new Fever Ray has a few dead ringers for the 'SS' style and sure enough they're the most (only? Ok, that's a little harsh...) worthy songs on there. It's a mild disappointment of a release for me.
With Beck I'm not projecting my opinion onto you, more just emphasising the difference in quality between the two releases in relation to my taste. To me they're leagues, absolutely leagues apart, to the point of it being almost ridiculous. I do realise that's only an opinion though, just a really strong one. | ArsMoriendi

To be honest, like a lot of good albums: it's a grower.
I feel like a lot of people try to judge an album on the first listen and that never works for me. I'm too busy being surprised by what comes next to really take it all in. The 2nd an 3rd listen are much better determinants of how much I like an album. Well... unless I find the album grating
In other words: the first half sounds really good now even if it was underwhelming on the first listen
| DoofusWainwright
11.03.17 | After ten or so listens I'm finding the opposite...that the first half has lost its capacity to surprise, and that's all it really had going for it.
Can see myself treating the last five songs as an EP length release long term. | ArsMoriendi
11.03.17 | Aw but "IDK About You" and "This Country" are so good | DoofusWainwright
11.03.17 | Neither is really my thing, when she gets into that more deconstructed/soundbite-y territory I need a composition as obviously striking and powerful as 'Full of Fire' to carry her. They aren't bad though and I see why they'd appeal to massive fans of STH. | theBoneyKing
11.03.17 | 4/9 is not mostly | ArsMoriendi
11.03.17 | I have more 3.5's this month than other ratings so close enough | DoofusWainwright
