REC ROULETTE ROUND 11 -- Butcher Breakout

lungsandgills, tippergoreics, closedrcircuitverse..
1Big Boys
Where's My Towel / Industry Standard

This round, I want driving music.. rec me an album perfect for a long drive.. not speed necessarily, i want mood projection, mental vistas, atmosphere settings.. you can rec one whole album or put together a mixtape..

Frippy

If there is an album perfect for riding a bike through autumnal Paris while being super duper Japanese, this may be it.. Precious and pretty in place, and starkly pensive in others, I like it, but also don't for reasons that may be just the same.. her bijou voice also gave me an eerie feeling that i murdered a pile of drunk teenagers in a remote cabin.. ultimately, the beautifully frail compositions overshadowed her horror film child voice.. also i do not ride bicycles, nor do i want to.. 3.5/5

gilly

Daddy kicked this off in grand road trip fashion.. from then on, it proceeded to intermittently dive into the sort of epic soundscapes that made it seem like i was driving on less a road trip, and more off a cliff Thelma and Louise grand finale-like.. which isn't a bad thing in itself.. there were a lot of cool sounds happening here and it took quite a few listens for all of this album's secret treasures to start surfacing.. overall, out of all the Townsend you've rec'ed me, gilly, this is the by far my favourite.. a colossal epic that's just low-key enough to appeal to my primitive punk proclivities!! 4/5 and ZEE WINNER!!
4Odonis Odonis
Post Plague

Uni (who actually made a mixtape, you lazy fucks..)

Needs
starts off a little too aggressively.. it's a road trip, not a ride through an acid barrel..
5Pop. 1280
Paradise

Pyramids on Mars

a decent, spooky little industrial number.. the chanted vocal are goofy (disney tm)..
6Wax Idols
American Tragic

Goodbye Baby

alright, this is more like it.. gloomy and propellant, but hits the right spots.. overall though, you're gearing for a much more intense drive than what i had in mind..

Strange Harvest

post-punk disco with detached female vox? yes, please!!!
8Marnie
Crystal World

The Wind Breezes On

cloying electronica with half-involved female vox? no, thank you!!!
9Cliff Martinez
Drive

College + Electric Youth - A Real Hero

as a young band(s), if you're going to worship and plunder the 80's, why not venture into the more interesting, daring genres that were cropping up around that time? huh? HUH!?!?!?
10Minor Victories
Minor Victories

Scattered Ashes

hmm...
11She Past Away
Belirdi Gece

Rituel

yes!!!!!! hell yes, amazing tune!!
12Drab Majesty
The Demonstration

Too Soon to Tell

hmm part 2 electric bugaloo
13The KVB
Minus One

Radiant Hour

given how many imitators try to ape Joy Division, i'm honestly baffled by how much airy neutered male vox dominate that niche.. does no one remember how ragged and fucked off Ian Curtis sounded through the whole thing? decent tune, i suppose..
14Horrid Red
Nightly Wreaths

Where are the Bluebells?

pretty fucking great! some nice patient work here.. night drives galore!
15Babel 17
Celeano Fragments

Darkest Years

I do applaud you for seeking out so many post-punk bands from across the globe, but we both know that genre was born and died in the gloomy smog of England.. also, naming yourself after a Delany book is lame, since the best novel he ever wrote was not sci-fi (The Mad Man, a filthy and sweeping homoerotic epic, and a fucking amazing book to boot!!)
16All Your Sisters
Modern Failures

Come Feel

the little breakdowns after the verses salvaged the tune.. some decent effects
17O. Children
Apnea

Holy Wood

a much better rip off of Depeche Mode and JD's Atmosphere that it has a right to be..

Score -- going with post-punk was a pretty good choice, however, i'd have much preferred some older stuff rather than a slew of modern revivalists.. still, some great tunes there and a few artists i will be checking into..

3.5/5
