| REC ROULETTE ROUND 11 -- Butcher Breakout
lungsandgills, tippergoreics, closedrcircuitverse.. | 1 | | Big Boys Where's My Towel / Industry Standard
This round, I want driving music.. rec me an album perfect for a long drive.. not speed necessarily, i want mood projection, mental vistas, atmosphere settings.. you can rec one whole album or put together a mixtape.. | 2 | | Ichiko Aoba 0%
Frippy
If there is an album perfect for riding a bike through autumnal Paris while being super duper Japanese, this may be it.. Precious and pretty in place, and starkly pensive in others, I like it, but also don't for reasons that may be just the same.. her bijou voice also gave me an eerie feeling that i murdered a pile of drunk teenagers in a remote cabin.. ultimately, the beautifully frail compositions overshadowed her horror film child voice.. also i do not ride bicycles, nor do i want to.. 3.5/5 | 3 | | Casualties of Cool Casualties of Cool
gilly
Daddy kicked this off in grand road trip fashion.. from then on, it proceeded to intermittently dive into the sort of epic soundscapes that made it seem like i was driving on less a road trip, and more off a cliff Thelma and Louise grand finale-like.. which isn't a bad thing in itself.. there were a lot of cool sounds happening here and it took quite a few listens for all of this album's secret treasures to start surfacing.. overall, out of all the Townsend you've rec'ed me, gilly, this is the by far my favourite.. a colossal epic that's just low-key enough to appeal to my primitive punk proclivities!! 4/5 and ZEE WINNER!! | 4 | | Odonis Odonis Post Plague
Uni (who actually made a mixtape, you lazy fucks..)
Needs
starts off a little too aggressively.. it's a road trip, not a ride through an acid barrel.. | 5 | | Pop. 1280 Paradise
Pyramids on Mars
a decent, spooky little industrial number.. the chanted vocal are goofy (disney tm).. | 6 | | Wax Idols American Tragic
Goodbye Baby
alright, this is more like it.. gloomy and propellant, but hits the right spots.. overall though, you're gearing for a much more intense drive than what i had in mind.. | 7 | | Tempers Services
Strange Harvest
post-punk disco with detached female vox? yes, please!!! | 8 | | Marnie Crystal World
The Wind Breezes On
cloying electronica with half-involved female vox? no, thank you!!! | 9 | | Cliff Martinez Drive
College + Electric Youth - A Real Hero
as a young band(s), if you're going to worship and plunder the 80's, why not venture into the more interesting, daring genres that were cropping up around that time? huh? HUH!?!?!? | 10 | | Minor Victories Minor Victories
Scattered Ashes
hmm... | 11 | | She Past Away Belirdi Gece
Rituel
yes!!!!!! hell yes, amazing tune!! | 12 | | Drab Majesty The Demonstration
Too Soon to Tell
hmm part 2 electric bugaloo | 13 | | The KVB Minus One
Radiant Hour
given how many imitators try to ape Joy Division, i'm honestly baffled by how much airy neutered male vox dominate that niche.. does no one remember how ragged and fucked off Ian Curtis sounded through the whole thing? decent tune, i suppose.. | 14 | | Horrid Red Nightly Wreaths
Where are the Bluebells?
pretty fucking great! some nice patient work here.. night drives galore! | 15 | | Babel 17 Celeano Fragments
Darkest Years
I do applaud you for seeking out so many post-punk bands from across the globe, but we both know that genre was born and died in the gloomy smog of England.. also, naming yourself after a Delany book is lame, since the best novel he ever wrote was not sci-fi (The Mad Man, a filthy and sweeping homoerotic epic, and a fucking amazing book to boot!!) | 16 | | All Your Sisters Modern Failures
Come Feel
the little breakdowns after the verses salvaged the tune.. some decent effects | 17 | | O. Children Apnea
Holy Wood
a much better rip off of Depeche Mode and JD's Atmosphere that it has a right to be..
Score -- going with post-punk was a pretty good choice, however, i'd have much preferred some older stuff rather than a slew of modern revivalists.. still, some great tunes there and a few artists i will be checking into..

10.26.17 | going to rec either Ichiko Aoba - 0% (atmospheric, 90 minute live album, very calming at some points, other more busy but never overwhelming)

11.22.17 | the penicillin years.. | Papa Universe
11.22.17 | Mark Lanegan - Dry Iced would have fitted nicely, but you have surely heard that already. | Papa Universe
12.04.17 | I need to have this said, I don't know if you've heard, but I just found out that that atrociously cheap Roadside Picnic pilot was cancelled by AMC, so they won't be making it. Victory at last! | butcherboy
12.04.17 | Good.. preview looked horribly misinformed, and that book is a sacred slice of my young adulthood.. Not to be debased | Papa Universe
12.04.17 | The pilot was directed by Alan Taylor of the Terminator: Genysis infame. | butcherboy
12.04.17 | never saw it.. But that show was always doomed.. If they'd stuck to the original writing, it'd be too dense and moribund for average viewers and get cancelled.. If they diluted it, it'd be utter shit and get cancelled.. The book is pretty known internationally as both an important piece of Cold War literature, and as a science fiction staple, but it's also very much a book a lot of people claim to love, having not actually read it.. | Papa Universe
12.04.17 | Well, the pilot was only technical, ie the thing you make and show to the producers and they'll then decide if they want it or not.
As for the book, I am usually not all that against adapting things into television format, because I lot of the time you can get a lot of interesting things out of it, without being too pedantic in the following of the source material (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency be my proof). However, even I do admit that some things are better kept untouched. Although I myself have previously toyed with the idea of reusing certain Strugatsky plots and ideas under a different setting or interpretation... | butcherboy
12.04.17 | I think a book like forsaken city by them would make a more digestible show in the west.. Holistic detective show was ducking stellar indeed! is there a second season coming soon? | Papa Universe
12.04.17 | The second season has now 7 episodes out already. | butcherboy
12.05.17 | oh shit!. yess!!! | Papa Universe
12.20.17 | Dirk Gently got cancelled... | Papa Universe
02.05.18 | So are we doing this again or what? | bgillesp
02.05.18 | Still gonna wait but it'll happen eventually |
