2The Damned
Machine Gun Etiquette

UniqueUniverse's rec
CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 77.5
Con: Fast and rowdy are the names of the game for The Damned. Love the energy and the whole “I don’t give a shit” attitude this album encompasses, and with the vocals/lyrics it’s obvious they don’t take themselves too seriously. In fact, some of the most enjoyable moments come from the nonsensical, as seen with their hilarious endings to songs (see These Hands and Anti-Pope). With this comes some amazingly fun fast paced punk tracks that just blow by you. However, The Damned don’t have the finesse just yet to write longer, fleshed out tracks as it gets pretty repetitive and thoughtless when the songs get longer. Plan 9 Channel 7 is just this, a bit too poppy and definitely not interesting enough to justify its 5 minutes. First half is some killer stuff though and this will most likely grow. 3.7/5
3The Damned
Machine Gun Etiquette

Neeka: Machine Gun Etiquette features mainly fast paced songs, based solely on raw punk energy. Unfortunately, it also contains a multitude of repetitive instrumentation, flavorless British vocals, and repetitive instrumentation. As a whole the album is mostly uninteresting except for a few moments of inspired musicianship such as the great opener “Love Song” and the strangely likable “These Hands”. On the other hand, songs like “Looking at You” are so damn repetitive I found myself thinking they were stuck on repeat for a while. It’s not that it’s a bad album, far from it in fact, it’s just that even in its most inspired moments, it’s nothing that I haven’t heard before in my brief foray into post-punk. This is what happens when Unique gets cocky. 3.2/5

5The Damned
Machine Gun Etiquette

Deadly: When listening to this album I felt it was pretty standard as far this genre goes in its general sound. This clearly highly rooted in the old school punk sound. Aside from what I would call stand out moments on “Anti-Pope” with its epic guitar solo and interesting interlude which is almost tribal vibe, to the carnival esque “These Hands”, and repeated tribal sounding bongos on “Liar”. There wasn’t much that stood out to me other than that, but a solid listen nonetheless. 3.3/5
6The Fall
New Facts Emerge

UniqueUniverse's rec for Tyler.
Tyler.'s CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 75.8
Con: I’m not gonna mince words, the vocals are straight up abysmal and detract from any good qualities this album has. It’s almost pointless to list them but for the sake of being nice I’ll try. So yeah the first song is a great, straightforward punk track and the production is pretty damn good. In fact, before the vocals come in, this band seems like a more than competent band. The lead singer, however, is the exact opposite of “charming” so much so that you begin to despise his fowl rants and gargled metaphors. When he is literally sneering at you that’s when you take the hint and stop listening. Unfortunately I couldn’t. 2.1/5
7The Fall
New Facts Emerge

Neeka: At the heart of this album is a admirable notion, straightforward post-punk with intention of bringing progressive shades of other genres into the mix. In reality the only impressive thing it can muster is decent instrumentation, which drives the only listenable tracks “Fol de Rol” and “Facts Emerge.” In every other possible way, the album fails gloriously. The vocals are among the worst I’ve ever heard, if not the absolute worst, which brings us to “Couples vs Jobless Mid 30s,” which is driven primarily by its vocals and it’s mindlessly minimalistic instrumentation. It takes everything good about the album and completely removes it, creating a 9-minute long masterpiece of shit that sounds like something off of Lulu if Corey Feldman had sung it. Even the album’s attempts at creativity fall incredibly short when “Groundsboy” laughably tries incorporating country music into post-punk, and “Nine out of Ten” attempts to end the album with a rollicking jam that simply sounds

Even the album’s attempts at creativity fall incredibly short when “Groundsboy” laughably tries incorporating country music into post-punk, and “Nine out of Ten” attempts to end the album with a rollicking jam that simply sounds like white noise. Fuck this album man. Sorry Tyler, Unique did you dirty. 2.2/5

9The Fall
New Facts Emerge

Deadly: Upon listening to this album it's clear to me that I can’t stand the vocals, let me just put that out there first. So now that I put that out there, this album was instrumentally fairly solid and at least attempted a fair bit of experimentation. A prime example of the experimentation failing miserably would be “Couples Vs. Jobless Mid 30’s” would be the rather odd distorted back half of the song which is sullied with due to terrible vocals and unimpressive sound effects. Another failed attempt can be seen on closer “Nine Out of Ten” which has an odd guitar riff but it gets repeated to the point of utter monotony that you’ll be wishing to drive your head into concrete. The moments that would have been successful without awful vocals would have to be “Fold De Rol”, “Brillo De Facto” and “Second House Now” which feature bumping basslines and solid guitar riffs. 2.6/5

UniqueUniverse's rec for teamster
teamster's CURRENT COMPETITION SCORE: 70.3
Con: It’s easy to see why this album was rec’d as a “bad” album. On first listen you can gather the following: the production isn’t great by any means, especially in the unclear/fuzzy vocals, the songs themselves aren’t inventive at all, and the album is extremely stagnant. However, you must’ve forgotten I’m the emo boi, Unique, because this album is the most emo rec of them all. Those group vox make this sound anthemic as hell and the songwriting here is actually pretty great. It’s an album that is very alt rock mixed with The Front Bottoms vocals and some driving post punk bass. It’s also very sunny sounding, almost uplifting in a way, making for a happy listen. Despite the flaws, I’m throwing this a 3.6/5

A Band Is Something To Figure Out

Neeka: Despite its obvious flaws of occasional repetitiveness (such as the first and weakest track’s mind-numbing chorus) and it’s generic nature, there really isn’t all that much to complain about here. Honestly it’s just a solid album overall, it’s pretty inoffensive and catchy, even rather pleasant to listen to most of the time. It benefits from some great instrumental sections (see the outros of “The Girl with Electronics Inside” and “Spin Them Atoms”) and cool group vocals. “Hassle Magnet” manages to even be genuinely great with its propulsive musicianship and surprising power throughout, and even the ineptly titled “New Phone Who Dis” manages to be surprisingly arresting at times. I’m not saying this is the best album I’ve ever heard, just that it’s a good listen, and something that might even grow on me in time. This is what Unique gets for manipulating album ratings. 3.4/5

A Band Is Something To Figure Out

Deadly: So admittedly on first listen this album didn’t do a whole lot for me as I felt the fuzzy production was a bit jarring. However, as I had figured would happen, this album is a bit of a grower and on the next few listens I truly grasped the whole “fuzzy” production,. The production gives the album a sort of an aged, vintage vibe. The vocals here are often layered or done with groups singing which gives the album a fairly large sound on top of the rough and aged production which doesn’t lack in its fair share of above par instrumentation. There are some interesting and surprising elements brought in from time to time which keep things fresh during the listen. Most notably the 8 bit sound effects on “The Mountain That Wanted More”, the piano at the close of “The Girl With Electronic Insides” the closing synth lines in “Play It as It Loops”, and the quirky whistling that closes the album on “Realistic Birthday Music."

There’s a certain charm that comes from repeat listens of this album and lots of bumping post punk basslines that really give this some staying power. 3.7/5
