rec roulette round 4: Living Live

1Devin Townsend Project
By A Thread: Live in London 2011

Rec me live stuff. Either a full studio album redone live (can be one I've heard the studio version only)
2Yes
Yessongs

Or it can just be a set list from lots of albums. Just make it good. Any genre
3Radiohead
In Rainbows: From the Basement

Cycle Trumpet
Very much resting on the laurels of its studio predecessor, In the Basement begins with a high floor of possibility. I would, however, like to raise a question. Is this even a live album? They were not performing for an audience and the cuts in the video make it seem as if it was not a single take (although I'm not sure on this one). Yes I enjoyed listening to it but I have a strong cognitive dissonance for live albums that are good but do not live up to the studio. The only evidence that this is "live" is a poorer recording quality but if that is the only change (besides a different tracklist), for what purpose does this release exist? Although it is enjoyable, it is completely unnecessary and I likely won't ever revisit it. 3.7/5

Post Pop Depression: Live at Royal Albert Hall

Meat Dealer
I think this best fit the definition of what a live album should be out of the 3. There was effort to make the listener feel a part of the crowd/performance with just the audio. As my first introduction to Pop, I think this was a good one. The tracklist wasn't particularly outstanding but they way it was performed was excellent and I now hope to check more from him out soon. 4.0/5 *Winner*
5David Bowie
Stage

Stoppertronics
While musically this was a good release, I think it severely lacked in a few qualities. This is the kind of live album in which I can hear a visual performance. By that I mean it is obvious there was more going on that audio at the recording. Perhaps my relative newness to Bowie caused this but I do not think the music quite illustrated itself beyond the audio. There wasn't as much banter or crowd interaction to make you feel like you were there. The songs were different enough from the studio to be interesting but whether they were elevated, I do not know. Because the tracklist was so strong, this gets saved at a 3.7/5.
