| Top 12 Albums of 2016 (again lol)
i've looked back at my first list and it sucks pretty bad and didn't have much variety so i just figured i'd make a new one | 12 | | Gates Parallel Lives
Post Rock/Emo/Atmospheric
Standouts: maturity from previous efforts, instrumentally refreshing from their previous efforts, strong vocal delivery
Favorite Tracks: Left Behind, Eyes, Fade, Color Worn, Forget | 11 | | Sunrise Skater Kids Friendville
Comedy/Pop Punk/Parody/Easycore/Ambient(???)
Standouts: as a parody, still manages to be better than almost all of the bands they're parodying, lyrics are random and hilarious as hell, and concepts still remain unique as songs, even though Jarrod makes a point of beating a dead horse in almost all of his youtube content.
Favorite Tracks: Trigger Warning, Pit Warrior, Mother's Milk, Rain On My Parade | 10 | | Weezer The White Album
Power Pop/Alt Rock/Emo/Indie Rock/Pop Punk
Standouts: Replay Factor that's through the roof, some of the best songs weezer have created since the 90's, going back to their roots better than they did on EWBAITE.
Favorite Tracks: California Kids, King of the World, L.A. Girlz, Thank God for Girls, Endless Bummer | 9 | | Aesop Rock The Impossible Kid
Hip Hop/Alternative Hip Hop/Experimental
Standouts: amazing flow and delivery, really well produced beats, lyrics in rap that actually aren't political(!!)
Favorite Tracks: Dorks, Mystery Fish, Supercell, Kirby, Rings, Blood Sandwich | 8 | | Childish Gambino "Awaken, My Love!"
Soul/Funk/R&B
Standouts: outstanding vocal performances from donald all over this thing, really mood-setting bass guitar work, and funky as shit guitars. acoustic drums for the most part are always a plus. really bold move from donald here.
Favorite Tracks: Boogieman, Me and Your Mama, Redbone, Terrified, Have Some Love, Zombies, Riot. | 7 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
Mathcore/Hardcore/Experimental
Standouts: it's dillinger, everything is a standout. jazzy mathcore, punching drums and guitar performances from billy rymer and ben weinman. throat-shredding vocals from greg puciato that make you wanna break a chair on a toddler. also, a full blown IDM track that's done well, plus a title track that haunts the listener more than any track the band has ever made, that also has Zach Hill (Death Grips) doing the percussion. | 6 | | Jeff Rosenstock Worry.
Dad Punk/Folky tinged Pop Punk/Every Subgenre of Punk Under The Sun
Standouts: brutal honesty, interesting concept, has a really solid first half if ya dont dig the concept, OO WHOA OH AH O OH OO WHA OH AH O OH
Favorite Tracks: HELLLLHOOOOLE, Festival Song, We Begged 2 Explode, Wave Goodnight to Me, Staring Out the Window at Your Old Apartment | 5 | | Injury Reserve Floss
oh SHIT!!!/Hip Hop/Raised by the Internet and Had No Dad Rap
Standouts: the fucking energy this album has to offer is unrivaled, lyrics are clever as hell
Favorite Tracks: What's Goodie, Back Then, Oh Shit!!!, All This Money, Look Mama I Did It, 2016 Interlude | 4 | | Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
Indie Rock/kinda lofi/Alt-Rock
Standouts: lyrics, song structure, interesting guitar work
Favorite Tracks: Drugs With Friends, Fill In the Blank, Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, Vincent, 1937 State Park | 3 | | Oathbreaker Rheia
Black Metal/Blackgaze/Post Metal/almost Post Hardcore???
Standouts: literally everything i can't exaggerate that enough this album is phenomenal, vocals i guess???, the overall vibe of this album??
Favorite Tracks: Second Son of R., Begeerte, Stay Here / Accroche-Moi | 2 | | PUP The Dream Is Over
Punk/Pop Punk/Hardcore
Standouts: gang vocals, fun as shit, lyrically pretty unique for 2016, gang vocals, drums punchy as hell, good to listen with friend, did i say GANG VOCALS?
Favorite Tracks: Pine Point, Sleep In the Heat, If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will/DVP, My Life is Over and I Couldn't Be Happier | 1 | | Touche Amore Stage Four
Post Hardcore/Emo/Screamo
Standouts: much more variety instrumentally and vocally, lyrics and delivery are soul-crushing and hit too close to home for me, plus elliot babin kills it as usual. sends chills down my back with every listen.
Favorite Tracks: Skyscraper (only in context of the rest of the album), Flowers & You, Eight Seconds, Rapture, Water Damage | |
