Movie Madness (November-December)

There is a pretty good list of movies that are coming out around this time (considering that we're pretty much in the Oscar season) so I figured I'm going to list down a bunch of movies I've seen or plan to see as the year begins to wrap up. I will update this list whenever I watch one of these films.
1Breaking Orbit
The Time Traveller

Doctor Strange: Marvel Superhero film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, directed by Scott Derrickson
8/10
Just another really fun Marvel superhero film. Pretty much in the same vain as Ant-Man in which there really isn't anything particularly groundbreaking but still enjoyable in any case. I feel like this is a lot more refreshing this time around simply because the Avengers aren't in this film. Don't get me wrong, I love the Avenger's films, but with all the huge amount of action and characters they dish out at us, it's good to see a nice change of pace for once. Cumberbatch does a good performance as always and the visuals are fantastic. Probably my least favorite Marvel film this year (I mean we did have both Deadpool and Civil War too, it's hard to beat that) but it's still a good film, especially if you plan on watching high or stoned...or both.
2Queensryche
American Soldier

Hacksaw Ridge: WWII film directed by Mel Gibson, starring Andrew Garfield
8/10
It's nice to see Mel Gibson going back into the film industry after 10 years. Say what you will about him, he's a very good director and this is no exception. Admittedly though, this is pretty corny and the violence is extraordinarily goofy (practically to the point of it being an exploitation film), but even as that goes it's a really well put-together and well acted film. It does get really tense at times, especially during the battles scenes. It's worth a viewing.
3Dream Theater
The Astonishing

Arrival: Sci-fi drama/thriller starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, directed by Denis Villeneuve
10/10
Easily my favorite film of the year. Denis Villeneuve has become one of my favorite directors since Sicario and this is no exception. The performance from Amy Adams is fantastic, and even Jeremy Renner who I think isn't getting enough credit for his role. They both did a great job. The cinematography is excellent, as such with most of Villeneuve's films, and the plot is great. Not to mention it is tense as fuck. You're pretty much guessing throughout whole movie as to what is going to happen next, as if you're right there with the characters in their fear and confusion (but in a good way). And the plot twist in the end, which I dare not spoil for you, gave me one of those "holy shit" moments, more so than any other film I've seen so far this year. Seriously, go see this if you haven't yet, and please don't spoil yourself.
4Blind Guardian
A Twist in the Myth

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: J.K. Rowling Harry Potter spin-off starring Eddie Redmayne, directed by David Yates
7/10
To be honest, the only thing that surprised me in this film was Johnny Depp's cameo, other than that this was pretty predictable but still I enjoyed it for what it was. I'm a fan of the Harry Potter films so it's pretty likely that those who are into the franchise will find this entertaining. Good visual and performances (for the most part), it's a fun and magical ride that I hope gets better as the rest of the series gets out. Though I will say I am interested to see as to how they will span this into a five-film franchise since I don't particularly feel this needed to be separated into even more films. I think this could've been fine on it's own.
5Pink Floyd
The Endless River

Moana: Disney animated fantasy film starring Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho
8/10
Another enjoyable Disney film. In terms of the plot it's pretty formulaic and predictable but the characters were very likable and the songs were pretty catchy (although one in particular was pretty pointless). The animation on the other hand is probably the best animation in any Disney film I've ever seen. It is a gorgeous film to watch. Other than that, it's your standard Disney animated film, which is totally fine. It's just not 97% on Rotten Tomatoes good.
6Kamasi Washington
The Epic

La La Land: Jazz musical directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
7John Williams
Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Rogue One (A Star Wars Story): Sci-fi space opera/war film directed by Gareth Edwards starring Felicity Jones
10/10
This is a lot better than Force Awakens, at least in terms of plot. The characters are a lot of fun, the action is great, and the special effects are of course wonderful. There were quite a few surprises towards the climax that I didn't see coming and the ending is such bittersweet, and I dare not spoil it for you. This is probably the first Star Wars film since the originals where you're really rooting for the heroes to win throughout most, if not, the entire run-time. In comparison, The Force Awakens certainly had you rooting for the good guys but not until the climax. The tension kept building up and it really sucks you in. I really loved this and I might go see it a couple more times. I could nitpick a couple things but they don't really take anything away from the film.
8Two Steps From Hell
Battlecry

Assassin's Creed: Sci-fi medieval action film based on the Ubisoft video game franchise starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons, directed by Justin Kurzel
5/10
Pretty average to be quite fair. I'll be honest, I thought the first forty or so minutes were pretty solid but there is almost no character development throughout the entire film all thanks to the bad script. The acting was pretty monotone, which is a real shame because the cast in the film is excellent. That being said, the overall visual style and action was superb, which only makes me kinda even more disappointed because the scenes that take place in the past take up only about 30-40 minutes of the entire 2-hour runtime. If the film focused more on that (as well as a few solid rewrites) I think this could've been a great film. There is quite a bit of good things about this film, it's just hampered down by bad writing and lack of chemistry between any of the characters.
9Anti-Flag
Die For the Government

Patriot's Day: Crime drama based on the Boston Marathon Bombings, directed by Peter Berg and starring Michael Wahlberg
