| I met Casey Crescenzo
I got a "Storytime with Casey" ticket for TDH's Atlanta show last night and got to sit down with him and ~20 other fans to talk about his music for an hour. Got a picture too. He's a super nice, down-to-earth guy, and it was really cool hearing him talk about his songwriting process and what went through his head when creating the concept. And the actual concert was kickass. Below are some of the things I remember him talking about during the talk. | 1 | | The Dear Hunter Act I: The Lake South, the River North
The recurring motifs and inside references aren't just backwards-looking. Some moments from early Acts reference plot points from later ones; for example, "Battesimo del Fuoco" references the fire in Act V. And there are apparently bits and pieces of Act VI throughout Acts I-V. | 2 | | The Dear Hunter Act II: The Meaning of, & All Things Regarding Ms. Leading
Casey chose the time period for the story because it's close enough to the present to be considered contemporary, but far enough away to be considered history. He referenced Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which was sort of the turning point where the dominance of orchestral music gave way to blue collar music. | 3 | | The Dear Hunter Act III: Life and Death
"Go Get Your Gun" is intended to be a sort of drinking song that the soldiers would sing around the campfire. Casey was inspired by songs from the time period with silly, very literal lyrics--the example he gave was a song with the lyric, "Yes, we have no bananas," which was literally about a fruit stand salesman telling customers he has no bananas. | 4 | | The Dear Hunter Red
Casey is working on a side project with Andy Hull. They already have a name, and it will sound nothing like either The Dear Hunter or Manchester Orchestra. | 5 | | The Dear Hunter Indigo
Indigo was Casey's favorite color EP to work on, and he wants to make a full-length album with a similar sound after he's finished with Act VI. | 6 | | The Dear Hunter Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise
"King of Swords (Reversed)" began as sort of an impromptu jam during band practice, during which the whole band was laughing. Then Casey realized it actually sounded good, and said, "Okay, this is no longer a joke. We're actually doing this." | 7 | | The Dear Hunter Act V: Hymns With The Devil In Confessional
"A Beginning" is essentially the "to be or not to be" soliloquy of the story, with Hunter ultimately deciding to kill himself. | |

10.10.16 | "Indigo was Casey's favorite color EP to work on, and he wants to make a full-length album with a similar sound after he's finished with Act VI." It's what I've always wanted
But seriously I'm super jealous of this. I've literally had dreams on separate occasions of meeting him and talking about music. | ashcrash9
10.10.16 | great points to remember
thanks for posting this, dude | FullOfSounds
10.10.16 | This is awesome | Calc
10.10.16 | he lives like an hour and a half away from me in the middle of fucking nowhere. unless he lied to all of us when I saw him | TheTripP
10.10.16 | That is amazing, I will be seeing them for the first time the 14th and couldn't be more excited. | TheTripP
10.10.16 | And I hope Casey sticks to wanting a full length album like Indigo... that was top of the color spectrum | botb
10.10.16 | He's such a nice guy | porcupinetheater
10.10.16 | Saying some musical motifs early on reference stuff to come later instead of vice versa sounds super tomato/tomahto
I'm just picturing Casey in douchey horn rimmed spectacles saying that while gesticulating wildly with his hands and leaning in close so you know he's *serious* | minty901
10.10.16 | Well Battesimo del Fuoco quite obviously foreshadows the entire story in a very deliberate way. I feel that's not too difficult to work out that that's the whole point of the song if you listen to the lyrics. I believe him when he says he had the whole story written when he started. Either way he wouldn't have put the lyrics about the fire in Battesimo del Fuoco if he didn't intend for the story to go in that direction. | hesperus
10.10.16 | Casey said he had the story planned out from the beginning about as much as the showrunners of Lost had the story planned out from the beginning. | ashcrash9
10.10.16 | "I'm just picturing Casey in douchey horn rimmed spectacles saying that while gesticulating wildly with his hands and leaning in close so you know he's *serious*"
Seeing them live last year and literally every YouTube video of him I've seen suggests he is the exact opposite type of person tbh
hate on the music if you want, the dude himself is incredibly humble and kind | insomniac15
04.28.17 | Can't wait to hear Act VI, but he mentioned in an interview that the next album the band will release will be different from the Acts. |
