Benteke is worse than lukaku in every regard. |
Keyblade
06.07.16 | no way man, he has a better touch, better hold up play, is a better finisher, even more physical somehow
the only thing lukaku has going for him is that he's been more prolific in the past couple of years but only because benteke was either woefully out of form thanks to epic mismanagmenet or seriously injured |
RadicalEd
06.07.16 | Nah, Beneteke is not agile enough, he's way worse when it comes to his defensive workrate, he also struggles with his movement which is way to static, he's also way, way slower than Lukaku.
He may be a better finisher overall, I'll grant him that. But he doesn't fit with any team that (like Belgium or Liverpool) aims to press up high and dominate the possession. (Granted Origi fits that system even better than Lukaku, but I doubt he's already developed enough to make the first team and he's a woefully inconsistent finisher) |
RadicalEd
06.07.16 | Also France is obviously THE favorite, England, Spain and Germany are all in the mix, the english Team actually has some serious chops this time imo.
Dark horses are Austria, Poland (both could go to the semis imo, given some luck of the draw and good form) and Wales (who are seriously underrated and could win a score the occasional upset, but will obviously not get close to winning the thing) |
Keyblade
06.07.16 | defensive capability is prob the last criteria i'd use to compare 2 strikers. but as a footballer, benteke is technically better than lukaku in every way. lukaku's touch and awareness are poor and he has to rely on his physicality whereas benteke could be half his size and still be brilliant
and even then, he's more of a physical beast than lukaku. also benteke is pretty fast himself but speed is almost inconsequential to both of their playstyles as they dont play on the shoulder of defenders and rarely make runs behind the defence so idk thats kinda a moot point
comparing their stats this time last year
Benteke vs. Lukaku
Goals per game: 0.4 vs. 0.25
Shots per game: 2.8 vs. 2.72
Key passes: 1.16 vs. 0.9
Aerial winners: 6.56 vs. 1.72
Touches per game: 45.84 vs. 38.66
Accurate passes per game: 22.12 vs. 18.91
granted, tactically benteke prob doesnt fit into the high press philosophy that seems to be taking over the game but that alone doesnt make him worse than lukaku at all |
RadicalEd
06.07.16 | "defensive capability is prob the last criteria i'd use to compare 2 strikers."
That is shortsighted though and especially a coach like Wilmots who has a "safety first" mindset, will disagree. Lukaku didn't have a great season at Everton, that is for certain, but I still think he's more of a complete package than Benteke. (who isn't bad at all, but always strikes me as type of Belgian Gomez) |

Lukaku was alright, definitely not poor with 25 goals in all competitions vs Benteke's 9 in 2015. Injuries sure, but did you actually watch Benteke at all? I don't know why you have such a hard on for Benteke - granted he was amazing at Villa and was arguably better there than Lukaku has been at Everton...but if you're Wilmots, you have to go off form - which is paying off it seems btw. nowhere did i say lukaku had a poor season, u should try reading before u go on a tirade homie. he had a phenomenal season and benteke had a disastrous one but one season does not a player make, and that's not what i was comparing anyway. i was comparing their attributes as football players and benteke is at a level technically that lukaku will never reach and i think i backed up why i think so instead of just ranting aimlessly like someone insulted my momma
he is in great form and deserves to start for belgium in this tournament based on it, but i dont think he's suited to international football and particularly Wilmot's style. neither is benteke really, but he's slightly better suited and also there's the fact that he didnt completely embarrass himself playing the lone striking role at WC 2014
"Benteke the most complete forward in the PL...SMH. Dawg he isn't even top 5."
im not sure u understand what is meant by a complete forward? i never said he was the best forward in the league, just the one with the most complete skillset. it just means he has everything in his locker, so if u can name 5 more well rounded strikers, naw fuck it 5 better strikers in the prem period...i'm all ears |

You would make a great politician. Safety of civilians is one of the top priorities of any government. It has been shown in the past year that mass gatherings are typical terrorist targets, and it has also been shown that despite France having one of the best counter terrorism police in the world, they cannot guarantee that safety.
Your traffic deaths analogy makes no sense for cars are elements depending on drivers and don't involve the government. The government sets the rules but doesn't play the game.
Thus an event of this scale could have serious consequences.

06.07.16 | Same here, i love the international competitions man. Unites pretty much every football fan before it even starts, and the fans getting together and talking about it is really cool to be a part of. |
zakalwe
06.07.16 | Also I can't help but feel the England fans are going to be total cunts again. It's already bubbling with trouble at Liverpool, Utd, West Ham, Millwall. England fans go to these things en-masse have a few beers in the sun and that nobbish tribalism thing comes out.
Few chairs will be flung about and it's next stop water cannon. |

CamiloG
06.07.16 | I'm South American and I have my mind very entertained with the Copa America at the moment, but hell, I can't wait for the Euro to start. The best football is played in Europe and I see this tournament as mini World Cup so the hype is real. |
danielcardoso
06.07.16 | Definitely watching both competitions closely myself. Curious to see how brazil will fuck up what should be an un-fuckable easy win against haiti. |
zakalwe
06.07.16 | Dan dude trust me they're absolute cunts of the highest order. Total meatheads who have absolutely fuck all to look upon apart from the past beatings they've had at the hands of their dads.
The hooligan element always attaches itself to these things but a lid has been kept on it for awhile.
I have a bad feeling it's going to resurface in little patches again during this tournament. |
CamiloG
06.07.16 | Yeah unfortunately Brazil is in the lowest point of their entire history to be honest. As a Colombian I can't believe we were robbed by the FIFA on that quarter finals match against Brazil in the World Cup, in which the referee stole us the tying goal. Brazil shouldn't be on the semi finals against Germany, happily they got what they really deserved on that match. |
zakalwe
06.07.16 | That was a stuffing of the highest order. Humiliation. |
danielcardoso
06.07.16 | People weren't speaking up a lot because somehow they made it to the semis, but truth is they never really played some good football throughout the competition. The chile loss was unfair as hell, and yeah they had some help from the refs against colombia. The germany blowout was a shock ahah, though not because they won because i expected em to in the first place. |
CamiloG
06.07.16 | Yeah, I totally forgot about that match against Chile, I remember all of this and my inner beast manifests itself. But then again the Copa America is our new chance to make things right |
CamiloG

06.08.16 | Yeah, that was a serious fuck up, in general the organization held by the USA for the Copa America has been very lame in my opinion |
ZippaThaRippa
06.08.16 | Lame as it may be, the last couple games have been a FEAST. I thought Paraguay was gonna nick a late point. Can't believe that game ended 2-1 |

USA curb stomping Costa Rica wasn't bad either. Except for the part where CR's manager started to cry. That sucked. |

06.08.16 | Well, Keylor Navas is not on the squad, that's something to consider (Regarding Costa Rica's awful tournament so far) |
Faraudo
06.08.16 | Copa America-wise, México, Colombia and Argentina are my favorites (I'm a mexican so maybe I lean a little bit more towards México winning it).
Euros: France's squad is the best by far, so I think they'll win. Nontheless, I wouldn't rule out Germany. |
Nocturnalize
06.08.16 | Can somebody fill me in on why France have such a great squad? Pogba is a good player but he's also massively overrated. Griezmann is a good forward but can easily be shutdown especially on the international level imo |
Faraudo
06.08.16 | Well, maybe because they have players like Pogba, Griezmann, Koscielny, Payet, Kante, Coman, Martial and Matuidi? |
ZippaThaRippa
06.08.16 | France has a bottomless pit of central defenders and their young talent pool is absurd. |

06.08.16 | Yeah, it's not that hard to figure out why they have a great squad tbh. |
Faraudo
06.08.16 | Even Evra and Sagna, they're pretty old, but they still deliver the goods. Both enjoyed pretty good campaings at their respective clubs. |
Artuma
06.08.16 | france do have sick depth in their squad for pretty much every position |
Deez
06.08.16 | Hard to ever go against Germany. The Italians always seem to be a threat and I love the old Italian teams but this is the weakest theyve been in a long time. Germany or Spain for me. Population of England to act like theyre best friends until someone misses the inevitable penalty and goes back to being a manc/scouse/cockney cunt and the fans go back to hating each other. Standard championship. |
Faraudo
06.08.16 | Spain looks kinda weak, tbh. They have some of the best players, but they needed to get rid of del Bosque and his antics right after that disaster of a world cup they had back in 2014. Also, they had a pretty lame friendly match against Georgia today (just found out that there's a country named Georgia btw) and lost 1-0. Dunno about Spain, man. |
CamiloG
06.08.16 | Agreed, I don't see Spain as a threat to be honest. Their going through a bad streak at the moment and I don't see that changing in this tournament tbh. |
Deez
06.08.16 | Too many good players to be ruled out, Friendlies mean nothing. Dont think any of the so called 'top countries' stand out. Could be anyones. But Germany for me, spain an outside shot. |

Oh ya Kante having one good season in his career is so impressive. Koscielny sure is great in the defensive fortress he leads right? Okay Payet in form is pretty badass but i just feel like some of you nerds watch to much premier league footy and are a little naive towards the international game. |

Idk about a clear cut winner but my favorites have to be, in order:
Germany
Belgium
France
Spain
England (they never play to their goddamn potential)
Surprise of the tournament: Iceland/Austria
Disappointment: Italy/Wales
Wales doesn't have too much going for them to begin with tbh but I don't see them turning any heads.
Germany has looked rough as of late but I expect the champions to regroup and look great |

Well, yeah, it's Kante's breakthrough season, every player in history has one of those. And no, I can safely say that I know quite a lot about international football, that's why I mentioned players like Coman, Matuidi, Evra, etc. Because I've seen plenty of matches featuring them, particularly Coman's. I could even talk about less known players like Pierre Gignac (France's #10) who plays at the mexican league, and i'm pretty sure that you've never seen a mexican league match in your life. So yeah, not exactly a "premier league nerd."

Secondly he was very good at Caen, was a major part of getting them promoted into ligue 1 (and keeping them there in the following season), but he didn't get the media attention because he's not a flashy player.
I doubt he'll be a huge part of the French team, because dechamps loves cabaye for some reason (and Matuidi/Pogba are major fixpoints in their system). But Kante is the real deal. |

06.08.16 | Belgium has a fantastic team, too. I just hate Fellaini so much, and with his stupid new haircut, oh my god. |
RadicalEd
06.08.16 | Fellaini will be warming the bench for the most part. Witsel and Nainggolan (another stupid haircut) seem to have the CM on lockdown. |
bakkermaarten007
06.08.16 | Fellaini is only good for breaking attacks by committing sly faults (or sometimes not so sly faults). And the cynical thing is that it is precisely this why managers value him |
bakkermaarten007
06.08.16 | Belgium is nothing without Debruyne, without him there's hardly any link-up. Hugely overrated team imo |
RadicalEd
06.08.16 | tbh I don't think they are overrated in the sense that the team isn't good on paper. I think they are a little overrated because Wilmots is a very conservative and (imo) not very good coach. If you look at their possession game it's very 2006 instead of 2016. Their build-up is waaaay to reliant on their fullbacks which is generally seen as a big no-no in 2016, because the fullbacks are automatically limited in their passing range when they are hugging the sideline and therefore can easily be caught by pressing play.
With a really good coach the belgian team would be a title contender easily. Alderweild/Vertongen, Vermaelen Courtois mHazard, De Bruyne, Witsel, Mertens, Lukaku are very very strong players and they also have a lot of depth. (Dembele, Fellaini, Nainggolan, Origi, Beneteke, Carrasco) |
Sinternet
06.08.16 | So is their chronic underperforming down to poor managememt then? |
RadicalEd
06.08.16 | Yeah I mean, it's never 100% clear, but that isn't just my opinion but many football-blogs and various other media-outlets I've seen in the last few years express doubts about wilmots managerial ability. He is basically just ridin their golden generation into mediocrity, but gets to keep his job because a.) he's a football icon in belgium and b.) they are used to being mediocre (because they arguably never had a generation THIS strong) |
bakkermaarten007
06.08.16 | He's not widely seen as a football icon though. I agree with your second point. I would add that thirdly the artificial character of our country has always hindered the development of deep 'teamgeist' |

06.08.16 | "I would add that thirdly the artificial character of our country has always hindered the development of deep 'teamgeist'"
That is not at all a verifiable statement. In fact it's highly unlikely seeing as pretty much all modern clubs are "deeply artificial" and are still successful and often times very cohesive. (and they would also smash any given national-squad, because they have way more experience playing together) |
Shemson
06.08.16 | I'm not sure of everyone else's opinion in England but I'm the most into the national team I've been since '96. It's so much easier to get behind a team when it doesn't include dick heads like John Terry, Ashley Cole and Stephen Gerrard and has a lot of good honest professionals and upcoming stars. Also the lack of hype is nice as it was always embarrassing hearing the last generation known as the 'golden generation' when we won nothing. |

Not picking better form players because theyre not a 'name'. The media. List is endless. Saying that Id say this is the least cuntish squad in quite a while. But the need to shoehorn average footballers like Henderson in there will be the owls downfall. As will they cant defend. 06.09.16 | Rooney has been so overhyped for years that everyone is now underrating him because everyone is so sick of the hype. In 700 career games he has directly contributed (goal or assist) to more than 450 goals. That is a phenomenal stat, especially considering that he has played a loooot of games as a midfielder lately.
His persona is obviously annoying, but from what I've seen he's at somewhat stable now and doesn't frequently assault other players. |
Sinternet
06.09.16 | yeah that's certainly true but also his constant choking in big matches and the fact he's starting to age now don't do him any favours

RadicalEd
06.09.16 | He isn't as explosive for sure and therfore he won't be the one who bangs in 6-7 goals for England in this tournament, but his passing game and his decision making are actually very, very good and I think he can be the one who gives england some structure in the attack. (Because Kane or Vardy can't, Milner and Henderson are not creative enough, and for Ali a tourney on this level may come a bit early to shoulder this responsibilty)
Agreed on his choking when he wears the Three Lions, but he's far from the only brit in that regard. |

France clearly had more chances to score than Romania and dominated most of the game, especially after the equalizer. Shemson
06.12.16 | Scousers are the weak link? As far as I'm aware the only scousers in the squad are Rooney and Barkley? Not sure what they did wrong?
The problem was negative tactics. England were well on top and took a deserved lead. Then instead of going for Vardy off the bench to stretch Russia on the counter attack he takes off Rooney for Wilshire and Sterling for Milner. SO NEGATIVE. We had no outlet for attacks except for Kane trying to hold the ball up and a win a free kick so we invited pressure for the whole of the last 15 minutes and they nicked a goal. Terrible game management from Roy. Don't blame any of the players, though Sterling was pretty poor. |
Artuma
06.12.16 | agreed sterling can't do much apart from running fast. definitely their weakest link yesterday |

06.12.16 | Seriously as England performances go we were alright. The equaliser was bad luck. We will probabaly lose against Wales and not get out of the qualifiers, Roy will be given the boot and it's all back to square one. |
adr
06.12.16 | Well i obviously meant the liverpool players, but i'm taking the piss lol. Anyway Sterling was indeed useless and Lallana wasn't very good either and the subs were comical agreed. Defenitely helped Russia with the including of more liverpool players 😂 |

06.17.16 | Gerrard, Hate him all you want but he was world class on his day. Lampard too. Cant argue with their trophy haul and goal records and Gerrard was in some awful liverpool teams over the years. Just never did it for England. Not the first or last. Terry for a few years was one of if not the best defender in Europe too. Ashley Cole another cunt who was undoubtable world class for a few years. Scholes of course. but he retired around 2006 ish i think. All world class players. |
Faraudo
06.17.16 | Dunno what's what some people see about Sterling. His finishing is bad, his passing is bad and worst of all; he's one of the less imaginative players in history. Yeah, he's got good pace, but there's a 100920292 other players with good pace. For instance, I just mentioned Walcott. Even though he's never really delivered the goods, he's got waaaay better finishing (and it's not actually good), and his pace is as good (if not better) than Sterling's. |
Deez
06.17.16 | I honestly think he made the wrong move going to city. Trophies and money obviously not but he was developing as a player at a place hed grown up around most of his young life. Suddenly hes a typical modern day footballer offered mega money and the fame but that price tag looms over him. I think he would have continued to progress at Liverpool. He will never be a goal scorer, Hes got womens ankles. And runs like hes handicapped. he does have flashes of brilliance but they have been rarely seen in the last year .Important to remember he is still a kid with loads of potential. Doesnt mean hell reach it. Be interesting to see what Pep thinks of him. |
Faraudo

06.17.16 | i agree tbh, müller is a real ass but he's honestly one of the smartest attacking players around |
Keyblade
06.17.16 | sterling is a product of English football's obsession with pace and power over technical skill. over a decade later, they still haven't moved on from hyping limited wingers like shaun wright-phillips and aaron lennon or even theo walcott later on. yes they've forged decent careers for themselves once defenders learned how to deal with their raw pace but none of them ever reached their projected heights. sterling is the same. really only bale in recent memory was able to break through that because he adapted and improved his game to not rely on his blistering pace. it makes him an even more dangerous player because now his ridiculous speed and strength are just one tool out of many in his arsenal |
Pheromone
06.17.16 | Sterling is shite, but there is a problem of the overreaction of fans when a player isn't doing well. Sterling will become better, obviously, he's young and he has got the talent. Also, why the fuck have people told me that they want Rashford to start. Rashford. Biggest overreaction to hype in a long time. Sterling should be dropped for Sturridge and Kane should still start. |
Sinternet
06.17.16 | honestly if we still had terry or ferdinand or any other strong defenders i'd be much more confident about england. cahill does a decent job but he's prone to stupid errors sometimes.

Shuyin
06.18.16 | Portugal deserved the win tho |
JamieTwort
06.18.16 | If Portugal lose to Hungary (which from what we've seen could easily happen) they could well go out at the first hurdle and even finish bottom of the group. |
Shuyin
06.18.16 | Why would Portugal lose against Hungary? Portugal dominated both games they played, all that was missing was the goals but that's kinda hard when the adversary plays defence during the whole match |
Keyblade
06.19.16 | because hungary is actually kinda good? |
Artuma
06.19.16 | yeah hungary has been the most positive surprise for me in this tournament, playing possession football with that squad and succeeding in it requires some fucking guts |
altertide0
06.19.16 | "Why would Portugal lose against Hungary? Portugal dominated both games they played, all that was missing was the goals"
You just answered your own question mate |
JamieTwort
06.19.16 | Portugal have drawn to two teams that haven't looked as strong as Hungary. It's definitely conceivable that they could concede against Hungary and therefore lose the game.
"but that's kinda hard when the adversary plays defence during the whole match"
Don't give me that shit, they've created chance after chance in this tournament, it's not a case of not being able to break defensive teams down, it's a case of not taking the chances. Austria's defence was all over the place at times last night, especially in the first half. |
Artuma
06.19.16 | albania didn't play last night as far as i recall |

danielcardoso
06.19.16 | I wouldn't say they were a mess, they seemed pretty well organized throughout. But not making excuses for portugal either, it's obviously their own fault they couldn't win. Just need more focus and take advantage of the scoring chances. |
rockandmetaljunkie
06.19.16 | worst euro ever |
Shuyin
06.19.16 | Shit happens but Portugal was the better team in both games, no argument. I would say Portugal was unlucky in the chances to score, but most of them were just poorly taken, shooting directly at the GK and shit. But losing to Hungary? Yea.. don't count on it |
JamieTwort
06.19.16 | I'm not counting on it but from what I've seen I wouldn't bet against a Hungary win. Also, I'm pretty sure there's a scenario where Portugal could go out even if they draw (as a low scoring third place team) and a draw would actually be my prediction for the Hungary-Portugal game. |
JamieTwort
06.19.16 | "worst euro ever"
I've been enjoying the tournament quite a lot actually.
There's been some really entertaining games (albeit not high scoring) and some really great goals. That 22 pass tiki-taka Spain goal from the other night was a thing of beauty. |

Keyblade
06.19.16 | i think we were spoiled by the last world cup which had so many high scoring games in the group stages
these games are more close tactical battles of atrition. fun to watch who comes out on top. if sigurdsson or gudjonsen scored in the dying seconds of that iceland - hungary game for example it would have been crazy, and they were so close too |
anarchistfish
06.19.16 | yh these games have been tight and competitive. bad opinions itt |
danielcardoso
06.19.16 | Assuming an opinion can be "bad" in the first place.
Yeah i guess nobody expected mexico to go out like that but by now no one should doubt the talent chile has, they were getting some backlash because of their inconsistent group stage performances but turns out they shut all their critics down. Brazil was terrible all around lol. |
JamieTwort
06.19.16 | Yeah I was pretty shocked when I saw the score from the Mexico-Chile game this morning.
On another note, Ronaldo must be pretty pissed that Messi's having a good Copa America so far. Played less minutes than him but has 4 goals and 2 assists. |

JamieTwort
06.25.16 | It's not stretching it at all. Switzerland were far more dominant from the second half onwards than Poland were in the first half during which neither team played that well. Exactly. I'm not denying that.
Yeah I get why people say it's a lottery, but it's not a lottery, really. It's just that the match is won by a team that's better at penalties, not at football, but hey if your team can't beat the other team in 120 minutes of football, why not see who's better in something else (by which I mean the penalties)? |

Poland vs. Portugal tie will be too tight,
Germany vs. Spain/Italy will be hype over substance
England/Iceland vs. France kinda feels like neither of the challengers would give France too many problems. |

tbh the Squad IS better than it was 2 or 4 years before. They just mega-choked yesterday and Roy definitely has to take responsibility for this. (Also why he was so loyal to Wilshire is beyond me, when he has Barkely on the bench) |

The body language even before half time was criminal
People criticized the likes of Beckham, Shearer, Scholes and Owen for not winning anything but I never saw them look that defeated after just 30 minutes like the players did last night...one goal behind with an hour still to play and they already looked out for the count. |

06.28.16 | The worst thing about that England performance was the way we played in the second half. Yes the goals we conceded were shocking goals to concede (both in different ways) but mistakes do happen. The fact that in the second half almost every England player seemed to lose their touch and the ability to play simple short passes was what made it unquestionably the worst England performance I can remember. |

Need to break down a team defending deep...

A) bring on a creative midfielder to play through balls and run at people like Barkley or Lallana
B) bring on every striker we brought to France and hope the ball happens to get to one of them somehow magically and also put Cahill up front too because fuck it why not? |

As much as I hate the penalties, I have to disagree with that. Should be better to just have a jury deciding the winner or else the match can go on forever, and the winning team would be exhausted on the next match. Just my opinion tho |
Shuyin
07.01.16 | Also, I don't think Portugal v Poland was a boring game. There were plenty of goal opportunities and fast attacks, plus individual skill. Way different when compared to the game v Croatia with nothing but midfield football |

07.08.16 | Newb to soccer but what is Germany's ideal playing eleven? It can't have been the one on the night. And how good is Draxler and Gomez exactly?
Also why not play Sane? |
bakkermaarten007
07.08.16 | Without that penalty, France would've lost. They were drowning under German pressure until that (vague) penalty. 75% German ball possession in the first 30 min tells enough. Mind, France was playing a home game. |
bakkermaarten007
07.08.16 | Anyway. Go Portugal! |

07.08.16 | even though germany was arguably the better team on the first half, france were able to create some chances too. shame for germany about the penalty (which was pretty clear after all) but they just couldn't recover from it and on the second half france truly controlled the game |
Artuma
07.08.16 | ok so prior to the final i'm gonna post my choices for the all star xi of the tourney!
gk:
neuer (ger)
obvious choice, the best keeper in the world was a solid as expected
defence:
piszczek (pol)
an exceptional right back when in possession, defensively very reliable and a dangerous asset in poland's offense
koscielny (fra)
really strong throughout the tournament, the defensive leader for the cup favorite france. was kind of a question mark prior to the tourney but hasn't failed in the slightest
williams (wal)
the heart of wales, a true team leader and also managed to score an important goal in the qf
hector (ger)
this pick was a hard one but i think hector deserves a spot, surprisingly consistent both defensively and offensively. germany definitely didn't lose because of him
midfield:
kante (fra)
as a defensive midfielder, kante might currently be the best in the world (hyperbole but yeah). an absolute beast when it comes to important game-changing tackles. a perfect tournament in my eyes for him
payet (fra)
if there was one player here that could be considered as the 'starlet of the tournament' it would be this guy. beautiful passes and goals throughout the tourney, a celebrated hero if france wins the cup
kroos (ger)
the brain of germany, he sees the pitch unlike any other player in europe. something dangerous was pretty much always to come when he was in possession
wingers:
bale (wal)
couldn't leave him out. he was just as good as wales could've ever hoped and was even able to create scoring chances solely with his individual talent
ronaldo (por)
a controversial choice for sure and say what you will about him but he's the captain of a finalist team (and deserves that title even though he can be a true primadonna sometimes) and has scored three beautiful goals as well, the importance of one of which can't be downplayed
striker:
griezmann (fra)
duh. the top goalscorer of the tournament. a huge amount of important goals, endlessly energetic, and always plays for the team. this pick can't be argued
coach:
conte (ita)
brought the best out of the individually lackluster italian team, made the team play like a club and mostly because of that they were able to surprisingly easily beat teams like spain and belgium
would be interested to hear your choices too guys! |

07.08.16 | Penalty wasn't that vague, the rules are vague. Most handballs are not really calls since the contact is usually incidental and the rule book claims there must be intent. The way refs have been taught to call though is any contact with the hands is a call. They need to refine that rule.
He clearly hits the ball with his hand but there was no intent. France used the advantage to win and Germany just didn't finish their chances. |
bakkermaarten007
07.08.16 | My squad 3/5/2:
GK: Courtois (he was basically the sole belgian player who did not disappoint. Unlike Neuer yesterday)
-defence: bonucci, chiellini, barzagli (yep, the wole Italy/Juventus defence)
- midfield: DM kante, kroos CM/CAM, Modric CAM, Bale RW, Ozil LW
-attack: Ronaldo centre forward, Griezmann striker |

07.08.16 | My team:
GK: Courtois (consistently good in every game, 0 mistakes. Neuer would have easily been the winner, but he really fumbled that 2-0 and put the nail in the german coffin)
Defence:
Ashley Williams (Strong centre back who never really made a mistake the whole tournament, scored an important goal, was visibly the true leader of the welsh team and basically played the tourney of his life)
Leonardo Bonucci (Out of the very strong italian CBs he was the strongest, the most agile and also the most important player for their posession game. His pass against Belgium for the 1-0 for example was pure world class)
Jerome Boateng (One stupid but ultimately inconsequential handball can't gloss over the undenieable fact that he is the best centre back in the world right now. Physically he's untouchable and his passing game is out of this world. Against france he struggled in 1-2 situations but he was also fighting his injury)
Left Wing:
Dimitri Payet (He was vital for the french team in the first two games against romania and albania when the team was visibly struggling with the expectations on their shoulders. He also did contribute greatly against Germany. Basically never disappointed when the team needed some creative idea)
post to long. |
RadicalEd
07.08.16 | Central Midfielders: Aaron Ramsey (In my opinion probably the strongest player of the whole tournament. He brought everything to the table, and without him Wales immediately faltered. Not only did he contribute to 50% of their goals (4 Assits + 1 Goal in 4 games) but he (and Joe Allen) also gave the Welsh game the structure and Bale some freedom to shine. He also fought very hard when the team was on the backfoot and was instrumental in turning the tables against belgium)
Renato Sanches (People like to point to Ronaldo as the one man that pushed Portugal thru, and there is certainly some truth in that. But if you look at the portugal games, they always struggled when this kid was sitting on the bench and immediately became way stronger when he was on the pitch. His play is a bit rough around the edges (to many fouls, a bit hyperactive) but he was the spark that the portugese team needed, especially against poland.)
Paul Pogba (People like to rag on him a bit because he is a diva and he certainly didn't play well in the opening match but from the moment he got substituted onto the field against albania, he was the heart of the french midfield and both a major creative outlet, as well as an important defensive asset. He just has a level of quality that few others posses)
Right Wing:
Jakub Blaszczykowski (In a very, very mediocre Polish team that mostly relied on their back four and the luck of the draw, Jakub "kuba" blaszczykowski was the sole source of creative spark the polish team had going forward. Unfortunately he will go into the books as a tragic hero, since he failed to put the deciding penalty into the net against portugal, but poland wouldn't have reached the QF without him anyway)
Strikers:
Christiano Ronaldo (I don't like him and he didn't even really play thaaat well consistently, BUT he did come up big for his team in all the important moments)
Antoine Griezmann (6 goals in 5 games you say? Alrighty then.)
Bench: Neuer (GK), Hysai, Chielini (Defenders), Bale, Kroos, Nainggolan (Midfielders), Nani, Sigthorsson (Strikers) |

07.10.16 | But now a special message. I gotta be honest, towards the end of the tournament i stopped reading this thread because of how unbearable the hate for Portugal had gotten. And that's fine though, everyone can root for the team they like the best. But before eliminating croatia, everyone here seemed to say 'hey they just took out spain, i can see em in the final tbh', same for poland and same for wales too. Truth is this team surpassed every obstacle, every negative comment and every injustice. The ronaldo injury today seemed like a complete nightmare. I didn't stop believing that we could win it, but i knew it would be a much more difficult game without a guy like him in the front. But the team came together and pulled through, like they always did during the euro. Funny how all my friends talked shit about eder all the time, and i told em today 'if he comes in he's gonna decide the final'. So happy for him, so happy for everyone tbh. FORÇA PORTUGAL!!!!! |

07.11.16 | Aight I'll admit it and I was wrong: I thought Portugal would be eliminated in the match against Croatia. But they were not. Actually they beat Poland and Wales as well. I wasn't a huge fan of their style of play until yesterday. They always defended very well, but in my opinion relied to much on CR7 which is kinda normal probably given his incredible capabilities as a footballer. I was sad for him when he had to be substituted due to his injury, but to my surprise afterwards Portugal played their best football in the whole tournament creating a lot of chances.
France reminded me a bit of Germany (I'm German myself): Lots of ball possession at times, lots of chances, lots of effort, a little bit of bad luck, no goal. In the end Portugal deserved to win, although many of their games in this tournament were exhausting to watch. However that applies to a lot of other games as well at this Euro. |
danielcardoso
07.11.16 | Yeah i mean, it's not like the supposed big teams played stunning as well. Germany never really played to their full potential, spain was a bit terrible, belgium choked hard in the big moments, france were always cocky and overconfident as shit... if anything, italy was the one who played best, and it's fun to say that because no one expected much from em this year. |

07.11.16 | tbh an underwhelming tournament got the underwhelming winners it deserved. I suppose Portugal somewhat deserves it, because they have been historically unlucky in the past, but they played some of the worst football in the first 4-5 games. In the semis and the final they were kinda alright, but especially the games against croatia and Island were just pitiful.
I can respect them for pulling through against the odds and I guess whoever wins in the end is right, but it's undeniable that they mostly played unattractive, risk-averse football. Like most teams in this competition.
"It was on fuckin purpose, payet would never get the ball tackling like that, it was clearly done with intent to sideline him"
mate, your portugal-goggles are a bit much at this point. It was a clear foul and even a yellow card, but no way in hell was that a deliberate ploy to take him out. First of all, his other foot actually played the ball. Secondly it's the final, of course everyone is all hyped up and goes into the tackles with a bit more risk. |

You fail to understand a lot of things. Portugal deserves the win, France played dirty and ended being bad losers as well, karma is a fucking bitch. We know that we don't have a proper striker, so we had a different approach which is kinda similar to what Greece did in 2004. I've seen some baguettes claiming that we played anti-game or w/e, which is both funny and ironic.
Also very happy for Ronaldo, he breathes football and his passion is unmatched |
JamieTwort
07.11.16 | You guys have got to be kidding me. Payet clearly went in with the sole intent of winning the ball and won it perfectly with his leading foot. Yes he caught Ronaldo on the follow through which unfortunately injured him but no fucking way was that a dirty tackle in any way whatsoever. Watch Payet's trailing leg (the leg that injures Ronaldo as he naturally follows through) and tell me in what way does he do anything dirty or with intent to injure Ronaldo. |

07.11.16 | i didn't see either side play especially dirty or anything honestly (payet's tackle was quite reckless but he cleanly won the ball after all, maybe a yellow card could've applied for not seeing the possible consequences of doing it so tough but that's about it)
@shuyin i'm not just talking about the final but the tournament as a whole, and i just don't see a lot of rational reasons why portugal made it to the final to begin with
in a lot of matches it seemed like portugal was just trying to survive and their play wasn't nearly as well-organized as 2004 greece for example. their defence worked well enough but france/poland/croatia could've scored at least twice without some bad luck and rui patricio's excellent goalkeeping. they truly showed a lot of resilience and discipline in the tournament though and that's really the only reason why i think portugal would "deserve" the championship |

07.11.16 | in the end, the three things this tournament will be remembered for are iceland vs england, ronaldo's title after seeking it for so long and for being the first 24-team tournament
maybe for something more in portugal but not really in a larger scale |
ZippaThaRippa
07.11.16 | Yeah hopefully the last 24 team tournament as well. The group stage was a tremendous failure. So much bus parking. If you're going to dilute the quality of teams going into the tournament, you may as well allow 32. Because at least then you won't have this 3rd place qualification bullsheeeeeeit. |
ZippaThaRippa
07.11.16 | I don't really think the addition of Denmark, Norway, Holland, Scotland, Slovenia, etc would have made the tournament any worse. |
Artuma
07.11.16 | yeah not a fan of the 3rd placed teams ranking thing either |
Shuyin
07.11.16 | "i'm not just talking about the final but the tournament as a whole, and i just don't see a lot of rational reasons why portugal made it to the final to begin with"
They played with their brains, our coach knew our strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you could all stop downplaying this teams monumental achievement, we did what we had to do, when we had to do it, plus we played fair. It's like Mourinho during his Porto days, all that matters is the win and the rest is just details
|
Artuma
07.12.16 | "plus we played fair"
all teams played fair or no teams played fair tbh, however you wanna see it. or if you look at it through GIGANTIC home country goggles, your team was the only one who played fair |
Shuyin
07.12.16 | Bro, we didn't try to get your best players out of the game by injuring them, that's what I meant by playing fair. Anyone saying that the knee on Ronaldo wasn't on purpose is just denying reality |
Artuma
07.12.16 | whatever you say dude, we'll never know the truth unless payet admits he intended to do it. it just didn't look like he tried to hurt ronaldo
also just to be clear: they aren't "my" players, i'm not french nor am i a fan of the french team in any way. my country didn't even qualify to the tournament lol |

Have you ever played football on even a semi-reasonable amateur level? Because it sure doesn't sound that way. That payet foul was in no way committed with the intend to injuring ronaldo. Maybe to assert a bit of dominance. May be a bit reckless even, but there is 0 evidence for malicious intent. He played the ball for fuck's sake. Ronaldo turned kind of unfortunately and payet had to much speed to avoid the crash. Definitely a foul. Even a yellow card.
Also you guys have Pepe and Renato Sanches so don't act like portugal is lacking the necessary aggression to assert some dominance when needed.
Btw. I'm not a fan on france. |
ZippaThaRippa
07.12.16 | Pepe got 1 yellow in 6 games and 5 in 21 last season. He's been one of the cleanest defenders in Spain over the last few years. His bad rep is only a rep at this point. |
RadicalEd
07.12.16 | I'm not even insinuating that he is "unfair". But can we not pretend that Portugal rode too the finals on a cloud of niceness. In the final alone there is a situation where Pepe just pushes Umtiti to the ground for no other reason than trying to create space for him. I'm not claiming that this was "unfair", although it clearly was a foul.
But if I were a french Shuyin, I would claim that he tried to break all of Umtitis ribs in attempt to weaken the french defense.
Fouls commited:
Portugal - Croatia 28 : 12
Portugal - Poland 13 : 16
Portugal - Wales 11 : 12
Portugal - France 12 : 13
Portugal is not fairer (or unfairer) than other teams. |

the replay for that made me laugh lol |

07.12.16 | pepe played one hell of a match though |

07.12.16 | yeah he played good for sure. |

07.12.16 | portugal didn't play the classiest football during the euro for sure. But it's not like that's what was necessary of any team to pull through and win. All things considered, our team simply isn't the type to create many chances and play flashy possession game. But that doesn't make us in any way a bad team, because we find our strengths elsewhere. We weren't the best team at the start of the euro, but we started to play enormous against poland, and same going forward. |
zakalwe
07.12.16 | In terms of what actually makes a 'team' Portugal were the definition of it in the final. Literal blood, sweat and tears for each other to win the thing for the pride of the country.
It was stirring stuff to see pepe spewing at the end. He gave it his all.
Ronaldo was passion personified. We could see that he hasn't had his soul replaced by agent intervention and bullshit. He genuinely cared.
I'm happy for 'em.

in their last three games portugal weren't bad by any means but i think italy for example were executing the defensive style of play much better and collectively than portugal, and also were a lot more ready to turn the defence into a dangerous counter attack. also their offense relied a lot on crosses and the better defending teams weren't on trouble with them
i'm not seeing santos as the god he is probably seen as in portugal atm but he did make some excellent changes in portugal's play throughout the tournament, the most vital of which was dropping the ultra attacking style after the reckless hungary game (also, cedric was light years better than vieirinha so props for that change as well). if they had continued with it, croatia would've smashed them into the ground pretty hard |

You're an idiot. |

07.12.16 | Seriously, I said this earlier, can one of you crazy Portugal fans explain to me what Payet does with his trailing leg (the leg which catches Ronaldo as he follows through) that in any way implies intent to injure him. He clearly goes in to win the ball (and succeeds), there is no way the jarring of Ronaldo's knee was premeditated. There likely wouldn't have been any strong contact had Ronaldo not left his left leg planted to do that piece of skill, which you can't tell me Payet was expecting. |

07.13.16 | I remember Boulahrouz (Netherlands) injuring Ronaldo on purpose during worldcup 2006. What a game, 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards. |

07.13.16 | Ahah i remember that game too, both teams were super strong that year, game was all about fighting though, tense af. |

|
JamieTwort
07.14.16 | @Shuyin: So I'm guessing you can't?
There is clearly nothing idiotic about saying Payet didn't intentionally injure Ronaldo or indeed asking for someone to explain how they got to the conclusion that he did. |
Shuyin
07.14.16 | Watch the replay from all angles in slow motion, if you still think it isn't intentional then I have bad news for you |
JamieTwort
07.14.16 | I have watched the replay in slow motion and from all angles and every time I see it I still can't fathom how some people can think it was intentional. I mean can you answer my question or at least give some explanation to how you came to the conclusion that it was intentional? |

07.14.16 | guys you're getting literally nowhere with this argument, just drop it ok |
