12.02.15 | aw damn that sucks. i was just on the site a few hours ago lmao. was just reading up on a lot of PM stuff today, cuz i was gonna getting into it soon :[
my wii stopped powering on like a year ago (pretty sure the adaptor is fried) and just my luck Brawl had to be stuck in it. i'm finally getting a new adaptor this week so ive been stoked to start playing PM |
Keyblade
12.02.15 | just my luck, fck |

12.02.15 | vanilla brawl is the best anyway. dynamic trip system is the best shit ever made |
Keyblade
12.02.15 | lol
im pretty happy with sm4sh tho, shaping up to be a pretty balanced game |
Madbutcher3
12.02.15 | no sm4sh is dirt
PM had its issues too but had overall the most viable cast all round and some really cool designs, tournament scene will probably stick around for a bit but heading back to Melee when it fades away |
Archael
12.02.15 | No sm4sh is amazing. Fuck u.
Also the pm dudes were talking about a few things earlier this week. They thought that Japan would outright ban the game bc it is actually completely illegal in Japan, but i didn't think the entire thing would be shut down. |

12.02.15 | Japanese smash metagame >>>> western smash metagame |
ArsMoriendi
12.02.15 | Smash 4 rules I honestly prefer it to Melee. It's just harder to play it with people because so few of my friends have a Wii U and no one ever wants to verse on the 3DS... so it's always back to Melee.
Sm4sh > Melee > Project M > 64 > Brawl honestly.... |
Archael
12.02.15 | Pm > melee but otherwisw yes |
Madbutcher3
12.02.15 | you guys are high, smash 4 has a super linear and boring combo game and is paced like arse. Melee is limited in terms of characters but is mechanically far superior |
ArsMoriendi
12.02.15 | Linear? No one plays any smash game (except for Brawl) for the story, they play for multiplayer. Or do you mean something else by linear... I'm uncertain.
As for the pacing, I thought it was actually pretty good (better than Brawl and 64 for sure) sure it's slightly slower than Melee, but the only people who are disappointed about that are the wave dash abusers, which I'm not one of. |
FirstStrikeIsDeadly
12.02.15 | I don't really care about all the competitive ins and outs or whatever. I mean, I liked Brawl when I first got it (though Melee feels more exciting). However, Project M just feels faster, tighter, and more exciting to play than vanilla Brawl, plus it has cooler movesets and characters from Melee that didn't originally make it to Brawl. The only ways I can think of that Brawl would be better than Project M would be that by default Project M has stage builder disabled (but there's a way to play Project M without the stage builder exploit anyways), Subspace Emissary doesn't work right (and even then last I checked there weren't many issues with it anymore), and some stages are way more bland in Project M for the sake of balance (and as I recall, it's still easy to get Project M with vanilla Brawl stages, isn't it?). Smash 4 is awesome for me and I was pretty hyped for it, but I still can't resist the tighter feeling gameplay of Project M. That being said I don't see the point in arguing over which one is "best", just play what you like. |
Keyblade
12.03.15 | "Linear? No one plays any smash game (except for Brawl) for the story, they play for multiplayer. Or do you mean something else by linear... I'm uncertain."
he means something else dude
but yeah i wouldnt say the combo game is significantlly more linear than melee. it's more grab based yeah, but they still work the same way, they just aren't as long lol. there are also no borderline broken combos like fox uthrow to uair either. the ones that came close like diddy's or even luigis were patched out. that's one really significant advantage in sm4sh's favour; the updates. the metagame is much healthier, and there are about 20-30 viable characters which is sweet
oh and you cant body people with Ryu or Cloud Strife in melee so yeah :D |
Madbutcher3
12.03.15 | "are the wave dash abusers"
oh dear m8
Also Keyblade, it's all well and good to say there are 20-30 viable characters, but the results in tournaments usually say otherwise; most top 8s at majors feature the same players with the same characters (Sheik, ZSS, Pikachu, Diddy, Mario, maybe Fox on occasion). People massively overstate the balance of Smash 4 - because the punish game is so limited, characters with mediocre neutrals are basically doomed. Most slow characters are therefore kinda trash unless they're projectile oriented like ROB. Realistically there are not that many viable characters, probably about 16 at most - Melee admittedly has about 10, but that game is mechanically about 400% better than Smash 4 which is a snooze.
Basically it's all very well having a marginally more balanced meta, but it doesn't mean much if the actual gameplay is pretty boring and badly paced. I mean, so much of Smash 4 comes back to resets to neutral from jabs and single hit punishes, which aren't very fun and lead to very slow matches at times, even with two stocks. The only exceptions I find are with players like Vinnie who get big combos, but the majority of the gameplay is just ehhhh
For a simple example of what I mean about the neutral game, take, say, Meta Knight vs Luigi. Luigi can literally just throw fireballs, wait for an aerial approach and grab you; some characters just have ridiculous advantages that others don't. Sheik's autocancel fairs are another example. Melee makes up for similar moves like Shines or Sheik's fair in that game by having viable dash dancing and far more movement options that make the neutral game much deeper and more proactive. |
Archael
12.03.15 | ^tfw fails to mention Ness in meta, smh. and you can say that smash4 is boring that's on you. but the balance is way better. every single smash game is more balanced than melee. even brawl. |
rufinthefury
12.03.15 | u guys r taking this rly hard |

12.03.15 | The thing that bothers me most about this entire thread is the way that last comment was typed. I hope you're just trolling and you don't actually type that way for real. |
Aftertheascension
12.03.15 | there's a meta?
it's a fucking fighting game not a moba |
rufinthefury
12.03.15 | it's how i type when i have a breakfast burrito in one hand. |
DinosaurJones
12.03.15 | That's reasonable. Breakfast burritos are delicious.
Also, in terms of meta for a fighting game... heh. I have no idea. I mean, I follow StarCraft, that has a meta. games like HotS, DotA 2 or LoL have a meta... do fighting games really have a meta? I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm genuinely curious. |
rufinthefury
12.03.15 | yeah they do. street fighter is infamous |
Aftertheascension
12.03.15 | The only moba that doesn't have a 100% "meta" is smite because hirez has fucked up that game to the point where no one knows how to effectively play it.
People still think xing tian is a good god. lmao |
Archael
12.03.15 | Wtf ofc fighting games have metas, they've neen having metas years before mobas even existed (arguably over decade). Wow. |
guitarded_chuck
12.03.15 | Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
the depth of the meta is not nearly as deep as moba meta though.
but yeah of course it exists. if it didnt there would be no diversity amongst characters and no trends in strategy. |
Archael
12.03.15 | Well duh, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist or matter. Smh |
Keyblade
12.03.15 | of course fighting games have metas, what kinda dumb shit is this. you think there won't be a meta with 50 characters with their own unique playstyles lmao |
guitarded_chuck
12.03.15 | for sure
do you guys play the new smash bros
i bought it but hardly play it i dunno
what controller do you use thats my issue i think, gamepad is too bulky |
Archael
12.03.15 | Gamepad is my fav controller tbh bc some how everything else feels like it has input lag when im pretty sure it shouldn't
Also i have a screen to myself which is great |
ConorIsNotHere
12.03.15 | GCC or go bust
Also RIP Project Jank ;_; |
Madbutcher3
12.03.15 | Why should I specifically mention Ness? He's a mid/high tier but nothing exceptional or noteworthy to Smash 4 generally.
I'm saying Smash 4 is boring because it's quite slow paced, has a pretty limited and linear combo game, limited viable movement options in neutral (although now extended dash dancing has been found, it's really impractical most of the time and not viable to do as a response to an approach like in Melee), excessively strong options like Shielding and Jabs, no crouch cancelling (reducing the depth of the neutral game) and a super limited edgeguarding game. It's even worse than brawl in some aspects.
And of course fighting games have a meta. Certain characters drift in and out of popularity - tier lists are an obvious example. Smash 4 has a much less deep one than most because frame advantage and speed is basically all that matters in a game with a largely weak punish game. |

Keyblade
12.04.15 | "what controller do you use thats my issue i think, gamepad is too bulky"
i use a wiimote lol, it is pure shit but i dont have anything else. i need to get a gamecube controller adapter. i'd like to thinki'd be a bit better with a gc controller too lol
"excessively strong options like Shielding and Jabs"
shields have been nerfed considerably tho now. but i agree the sm4sh neutral game is kinda lacking, no real approach options |
Madbutcher3
12.04.15 | Shielding is still an extremely good option since rolls are less punishable and dropping shield is still super fast. |
Keyblade
12.04.15 | yep. but that's balanced somewhat by the fact that grabs are also pretty strong, and start combos for most characters |
Madbutcher3
12.04.15 | But grabs are bad options for most slow characters since it compounds their slowness and adds a lack of range. Plus it makes spacing moves in neutral less of a thing so again the neutral is just kind of lacking. |
guitarded_chuck
12.04.15 | "speed is basically all that matters in a game with a largely weak punish game."
yeah this is why i cant get super into 4 in a nutshell
doesnt help that i always liked playing the bigger slower stronger characters (DK, ganondorf etc)
i mostly use my wiiu to download old games since my snes and gamecube are broken and n64 MIA |
