11.09.15 | "it is a 'real' genre. its ambient techno."
then why are artists such as Squarepusher and Venetian Snares also labelled IDM?
it's a fake genre with no definition. it's a way that people label electronic music that they deem to be somehow more artful than other electronic music. |
Archael
11.09.15 | It is more artful than other electronic music. It also just happens to be ambient techno. |

11.09.15 | I mean sure but so can tons of other artists that aren't ever labelled as IDM
I'm mainly just contradicting Potsy's claim that IDM and ambient techno are one and the same because I don't think anybody would ever call Squarepusher/VS techno |

11.09.15 | "then why are artists such as Squarepusher and Venetian Snares also labelled IDM?
it's a fake genre with no definition. it's a way that people label electronic music that they deem to be somehow more artful than other electronic music."
because both venetian snares and squarepusher often make ambient techno. clearly you just have no idea what you are talking about and also don't know what ambient techno is at all so maybe you should educate yourself instead of bullshitting on the subject. IDM is literally interchangeable with the term ambient techno. it is indeed a silly term and stems from a long lineage of silly buzz-words used to glorify the genre and create interest in electronic circuits but non-the-less its just another term for ambient techno that is more commonly used these days. go read some music history dude it'll be good for you.
all ambient techno is is an answer to ambient house in the late 80's and early 90's. all it means is that it shifts the focus of other techno to a less club oriented atmosphere, its armchair electronic so to speak. it focuses on experimentalism of all forms which makes it an inherently broad and diverse genre. ambient techno artists can be influenced from either side of the spectrum, be it drum and bass which gives u the more spastic artists or it can be influenced by downtempo or noise or pretty much anything. the defining characteristic is, again, that its 'post-club' in nature and inherently experimental. ambient techno got big in the early 90's and artists that were formative to its development like aphex and autechre were all featured on a series of compilations on warp in which the term 'intelligent techno' was derived because the first instalment was called 'artificial intelligence'. intelligent techno is ambient techno, it was just a more buzzy term for it and it picked up. then some fucker reviewed a comp for NME and used the term 'intelligent dance music' interchangeably with 'intelligent techno' and the rest is history. people picked up the term and now its the most commonly used term, even if its stupid and aphex himself has even spoken out about how he finds it derogatory towards other kinds of electronic music. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.09.15 | ull also here other tags fly around like art techno or armchair techno, it all means the same thing. its just glorification. but at the end of the day idm is the term that is preferred these days and it is very much a 'real' genre. |
Relinquished
11.09.15 | well squarepusher is IDM and drum and bass in most of his songs, which isn't techno but I heard enough of his early shit to be also influenced by acid techno like AFX was. he and VS show their ambient techno influence on most of their material so it all shows up in some shape or form. if it helps just think that some artists will be chillin, heady, and make shit to groove your head along with or make dance music that you can't dance to. |
Keyblade
11.09.15 | "ull also here other tags fly around like art techno or armchair techno"
i'm glad i've never seen anyone use these tags seriously |
Ocean of Noise
11.09.15 | I admit I'm probably not as versed in techno as you are Potsy so I concede.
I guess I just, as you say, find it derogatory towards other genres and that's why I avoid using the term.
It just, to me, seems like there's so much elasticity in IDM's definition that it has devolved to basically mean "electronic music that's better than other electronic music" hence why artists like Flying Lotus (???) have the label despite not really being ambient at all |
climactic
11.09.15 | fuckin rekt |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.09.15 | it also helps if u dont get caught up on the fact that 'techno' is used as a suffix to the term as it can be misleading. which is probably why as the genre developed people started looking for new stupid terms to replace it with. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.09.15 | "I guess I just, as you say, find it derogatory towards other genres and that's why I avoid using the term."
it is, and its stupid, which is why i like educating people on the history and evolution of idm because it makes u realize that historically pioneers of the genre werent actually pretentious enough to call themselves idm lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.09.15 | and it is also indeed a very broad and elastic term, especially now, and usually not a good descriptor unless paired with other tags. for instance if u tag something idm/acid house versus something as idm/breaks/d&b u have a MUCH clearer understanding of what kind of 'idm' you're going to be hearing. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.09.15 | its almost more of a descriptor like 'lofi' in that sense except the difference being that idm is rooted in an actual legitimate genre and is specific to electronic music and lofi is really just a descriptor at the end of the day and nothing more. |

not all of them do tho they can be on the entire opposite side of that spectrum i think its easier to just think of it as electronic that is experimental (drawing many different influences) in nature and rooted in a desire to craft 'dance' music that is challenging and can be enjoyed outside of a club setting. |
