Top 5 John Coltrane

My top 5 favourite albums from not only my favourite jazz musician and composer, but also my favourite jazz quartet (Elvin Jones man, that guy was amazing). For non quartet albums which narrowly missed the list, honourable mentions go to Blue Train, Giant Steps, Stellar Regions and Om. And if I was going to recommend one more quartet album, I would say Quartet Plays. Enjoy.
1John Coltrane
Africa/Brass

'Africa' is one of my favourite jazz pieces ever, the piece grows and grows with its fantastic horn ensemble (including but not limited to Eric freaking Dolphy), until it collapses under its own weight and gives way to some fantastic piano, bass and drum solo's from the classic quartet. As per usual Coltrane's solo's are fantastic, his sheet of sound approach is brilliant dancing between all the supporting horns. Fantastic track, the other tracks are brilliant, Greensleves in particular is in my opinion as good or better than 'My Favourite Things'.
2John Coltrane
A Love Supreme

Probably his best album (though not my favourite, a close 2nd though), due to it being his most cohesive and holistic album. The quartet is at its finest, which is really saying something. Every track has a fantastic sense of urgency and intensity, due to the fact that most if not all material was created in the spur of the moment. John Coltrane shows his creative genius on this album, with his use of modes and harmony, his sheet of sound approach to soloing, and the reciting of a poem to his spirituality through the saxophone. An absolute classic that gets better with every listen.
3John Coltrane
My Favorite Things

Can I get another Coltrane classic? Well yes, this album is pure fire. Probably his best mix of creativity and accessibility (and not in a boring way, he just doesn't make things too intense). This album got the new Coltrane sound and quartet the recognition it deserved with its genius rendition of a popular classic. Enough has been said about that gem of a track, but I will add that it is absolutely mesmerizing and hypnotic. The rest of the tracks are great, and show a wide range of diversity. 'Summertime' is probably the most intense track, whilst the other two take a more relaxed approach (but not to the extent of albums such as Crescent, another classic btw. Check it if you are already familiar with these albums).
4John Coltrane
Olé Coltrane

This was his last release on Atlantic records with his consent, and what an album to leave with. 'Ole' is my other favourite Coltrane epic with 'Africa. It is as equally intense, with a fantastic structure and set of solo's. Also Dolphy does his magic on the flute, which adds another layer of texture to the gorgeous cacophony. The other tracks are great, though a bit overshadowed by the opener. I still wouldn't rate this anything lower than a 5, as the album has a truly unique and fantastic sound compared to his other releases. Plus its the quartet and Dolphy, come on!
5John Coltrane
"Live" at the Village Vanguard

Another quartet classic, with another killer epic opening track. 'Spiritual' is as fantastic as the two previously mentioned epics, so no description needed. Listen to it!. The other tracks take a more standard approach to the quartet sound, but they are still killing it with fantastic solo's and playing. 'Softly as the morning Sunrise' in particular shows great playing between Tyner and Jones.
