07.07.15 | damn it's like you got the top 50 from the genre rankings and Allmusic's 5/5s |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Right, I forgot that none of these were important or even good. Sputnik's user rating must be complete full of shit. |

07.07.15 | "I believe these 99 albums give a basic broad understanding for those who want to study and truly comprehend music in all of its forms."
5 classical albums, 2 blues albums, 3 jazz albums, and virtually no music from outside of north america/europe...... but......
20+ metal albums, 3 gorillaz albums, and fucking sean paul

07.07.15 | damn it's like you got the top 50 from the genre rankings and Allmusic's 5/5s [2]
And three Gorillaz albums??? Please. Truth is there should be no doubles by any artists in a list like this. |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Have I failed? |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | I got probably 60% of these picks from top rankings, but not this site. I'll be honest, Rate My Music and Sput opened up a lot of new albums for me to use, though a good amount of these have personal favorites for decades. I've used this list for quite a while. We discuss individual songs all the time, but these are the albums I tell them to study in full length.
For the whole 20+ metal thing...I only do that because 99% of my students have never heard more than fifteen seconds of metal and they usually scrunch it into a single genre when it's arguably the most diverse genre out there. |
theBoneyKing
07.07.15 | I mean there are a lot of essential albums here, but there is definitely a lot more that needs to be covered to make it a holistic look at music. |
Frippertronics
07.07.15 | You seriously got these from the top 20 or so rankings by decade, there's no other way they'd be in here.
edit: nvm you did |

SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Yes, None So Vile is probably the most death metal album ever made. It perfectly sums up the entire genre in one album. Also, it's funny to hear the reactions the next day in class. I always love that. |
Supercoolguy64
07.07.15 | surpriesed to see 82, isnt that like a joke album or something? |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | More or less. 82 is a greatest hits compilation by a questionable band, but I've met the infamous Eric(a) Dapkewicz himself plenty of times, so saying "this album is actually by a good friend" gets the students fairly interested. It also showcases all of the progressions the band has gone through, including prog rock, trip hop, gothic, electronic, IDM, alternative rock, and ambient, making it an intriguing collection. It's got some genueinly great tunes, too. Most of the kids universally agree that certain songs are very good. |

07.07.15 | a decent list with this concept would have at least 200 albums
list is missing a lot
unbalanced genres, way too much rock/metal
lots of these are not very important (todd terje, seriously?) |

07.07.15 | maybe he was a little extreme but his point was valid |

07.07.15 | Lol this list and 85 |

07.07.15 | Those 4 classical ******albums****** sure do sum up almost 600 years of constantly changing music from around the world |
JS19
07.07.15 | Even they're all western styles of music tbh. A list would have to be 500 long to even touch on the varying styles of music culturally and historically worldwide |
treeqt.
07.07.15 | sonorism and minimalism aren't really western
anyway if you're not being extremely pedantic you can easily do western music history in 100 albums
just gotta be willing to leave out things of minor importance despite major acclaim |
altertide0
07.07.15 | this list implies that progressive rock alone is more important than classical or jazz lol not mentioning the whole rock music |

FlyheadMetal
07.07.15 | the metal is cool lol, my music teacher hated metal and never let me participate in fun music friday lmao, true story...he thought metallica was innapropriete for class and i wanted to play tuesdays gone from garage inc, lol yah |
FlyheadMetal
07.07.15 | seriosuly fuck that guy, he'd tell the class to "bring music nobody has ever heard before" and then he'd say "todd, no speed death screamo" and id be like "that doesn't even exist lol" |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Todd, that is exactly why I share metal with my students. 99% of the music professors I've worked with are unlikable pricks who only share classical and pop, maybe diving into jazz for a lesson before resurfacing back up to pop. Metal is a diverse genre, among the most diverse out there. |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | And a sincere fuck you to 90% of you plebeians. |
treeqt.
07.07.15 | sonorism originated from communism west and thus is obviously not western and minimalism kind of already existed in for example indian and african music before the new york memers experimented with it
it would be fair to consider everything associable to the hot term that is western art music western music but to me the advent of all those hot -isms during the mid 20th century marks the transition of western art music into global art music |
cleanpeter
07.07.15 | 81 is 81 |
theBoneyKing
07.07.15 | To all the metalheads out there: Yes, metal is extremely diverse, but if one simply does not like the foundations of what defines metal, they are almost certainly not going to like any type of metal.
But is it really any more diverse than any other genre? Sure, there are about a billion different subgenres of metal that have names, but all genres have a ton of subgenres, they just aren't all necessarily given particular names. To lump all metal together is stupid, but again if you don't like metal in general, introducing people to 20 different subgenres isn't going to make a significant difference. |
Valkyrion
07.07.15 | metal is not the most diverse genre, that goes to electronic music. it also has a very peculiar sound and aesthetic that not everyone is going to like / grow to appreciate. |
treeqt.
07.07.15 | metal is by far the least diverse genre tbh |
theBoneyKing
07.07.15 | Idk I don't like metal but I will agree that it is pretty diverse. Although that diversity is defined a lot by lyrics, more so than other genres' diversities are |
Valkyrion
07.07.15 | das true |
Feather
07.07.15 | lol 3 Gorillaz albums.. |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Metal is extremely diverse and anyone who disagrees is simply a stubborn fuck. I really wouldn't really consider myself a metalhead, but anyone with ears can hear VAST differences in practically every sub sub sub genre in metal. And most metal is not simply diversified by lyrics, usually it's the exact opposite. |
SomeSayShesNaive
07.07.15 | Quite clearly, ma'am. |

12% jazz
20% hip-hop
10% rock
10% progressive rock
13% electronica
12% psychedelic
10% experimental
Or something like that. Something tells me that doesn't add up right but those are the right genres on my chart. |
Frippertronics
07.07.15 | replace all 99 of these with 0% please and thank you |
Valkyrion
07.07.15 | agree |
Valkyrion
07.07.15 | but for real I love metal, but I'd hardly call it the most diverse (or dynamic) genre
a lot of it is really derivative and stuck up on genre conventions and tradition |

TheSonomaDude
08.07.15 | Now this is some bullshit. I appreciate a music theory teacher adding metal and rap into their curriculum, but trying to squeeze all the different sounds of music into 99 albums is impossible. To do this justice would require a minimum of 500 albums.
The metal stuff on here is awesome though, I'll say that. |
