06.04.15 | Is 7 turn based? If so, that would be pretty cool. havnt played anything turn based since pokemon.
I think what I am between now is VII, X/X-2 Remastered and XIII.
Thoughts? |
Feather
06.04.15 | @Lepre I didnt see you advised against XIII, maybe Ill just stick with starting at VII and see where it goes from there. |
GmemberKills
06.04.15 | I highly recommend the X remaster it would be imo a perfect introduction to the series and rpgs in general, the graphics are still nice, the story drives you to keep playing and you get an idea of what to expect from other entries and other rpgs. Its's a little more straight forward too which isn't a bad thing, I think you'd be able to get into and enjoy it right away. All my friends and even my dad who doesn't play video games much managed to fall in love with it.
Stay away from the 13 series while I finished the first game and its not bad I would prefer to play almost any other FF game. |
LepreCon
06.04.15 | All Final Fantasy games up until XII ( or XI, if you're gonna be pedantic) were turn-based with slight variations. VII was my first and still stands as my favourite. But yeah, play as many of them as you can thereafter. |
Feather
06.04.15 | Okay I have gotten about an even number of people advocating for me to play either X and VII. Any words to sway me one way or another?
@Leprecon so is X not turn based? I may prefer VII just because of that then. |
DungeonBoy
06.04.15 | My list would be:
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Final Fantasy III (US)
3. Final Fantasy II (US)
4. Final Fantasy IX
5. Final Fantasy X
6. Final Fantasy XII
7. Final Fantasy VIII
8. Final Fantasy XIII |
GmemberKills
06.04.15 | Also I'd like to add while I agree you should play some of the older classic FF games eventually. I just think since you haven't played any rpgs you may have a harder time getting into them and appreciating them as much. X is turn based too, the battle system is fantastic in that game. 13 and 12 are really the only games that have a different battle system |
DungeonBoy
06.04.15 | VII has the best story of any Final Fantasy. |
PayneTiger777
06.04.15 | X is turn based and the upgrade system in it is one of the best in FF. IX has a great story as well, except for the random final boss. VII is fairly easy, unless you want to fight the frustrating emerald and ruby weapons. |

06.04.15 | sooooo is Sephiroth in 7 then? Not gunna lie, he was a bad ass final villain in Kingdom Hearts. |
PayneTiger777
06.04.15 | Yeah he is. I liked him more in Kingdom Hearts than FF7 to be honest. He just gets annoying after a while. The best FF villain is Kefka, by far, from FF6. |
Feather
06.04.15 | I've always been intrigued with final fantasy simply because of the character designs. I have always though Cloud, Sephiroth and any other character I've seen from the game looks bad ass. |
danielito19
06.04.15 | this site has terrible taste in Final fantasy
VI is definitively the best - the world and characters are so vibrant and interesting, and the story exhibits tons of open-endedness and choice (mostly in the second half) while still maintaining a beautiful standard of storytelling. The main villain is easily the best villain in any FF game - without saying too much, his actions are completely vile, and he has perhaps the strongest personality in the whole game.
IV is also excellent. The story is much more traditional, focusing on a single character with a rotating cast of friends, and is also much more linear.
idk, square lost the magic after the SNES. |
Comatorium.
06.04.15 | X has Seymour though, he was pretty badass. I'd say start with X and then go back to play VII. You'll appreciate the simpler graphics and lack of voice acting as a way to connect more with the characters after X's polish. |
danielito19
06.04.15 | vii is the most disgustingly overrated video game in the history of gaming. don't get me wrong, it's a very good game, I'd go so far as to say it's fantastic. However, it doesn't deserve the mounds of hyperbolic praise. |
AmericanFlagAsh
06.04.15 | VII is amazing, don't listen to people who talk shit about it.

ConcubinaryCode
06.04.15 | Play anything from 4-10. 4 has the best story. 5 has the most interesting class system. 6 has the best characters and music. 7 has an interesting twist on abilities even though I feel it makes the roster useless. 8 has the best minigames and the combat is fairly interesting too. 9 is just solid all around. 10 was the first legitimate turn based combat that didn't use an atb gauge, it's also the first fully 3d game with voiced characters and the story is good too. They're all buyable on psn |
Feather
06.04.15 | @MO I was joking about starting at 13
@Danialito thats exactly what I am kind of gathering from this thread. In general though it appears that there is a general dislike for 12 and 13. And that in general 7 has the most people rank it as the best |

ConcubinaryCode
06.04.15 | Drab characters, boring gameplay, uninteresting story, shallow world, basically a tech demo with only the graphics being the high point in the game. Final Origin

elcrawfodor
06.04.15 | OK I have a computer in front of me so I can give a more detailed response.
I is a very simple turn-based RPG that's delightful in its simplicity but doesn't offer much else.
II has an interesting upgrade system, but it's very easy to hack and turn your characters into gods with little effort. Tried to have a more interesting story, but it's still very thin (understandable for an NES RPG).
III introduced the job (class) system and its remakes are fun enough to play, but the remakes are also very slow with the 3D animations and you'll have to grind quite a bit.
IV is the first to have a decent story, so long as you can appreciate its presentation as a SNES game. Introduced Active Time Battle system to spice up the combat a bit. Lots of memorable characters.
V has weak story, but the job system is easily the best in the series (barring Tactics). You can mix and match abilities from jobs with other jobs and create some really badass characters by the end, lots of fun especially if you're into grinding for lots of sweet abilities (my Bartz by the end would hold a weapon in each hand and attack four times with each one, letting him hit 8 times per move with legendary weapons). For what it's worth, this was my first FF and I loved it as a kid (and still do).
VI has the best story and art style up to this point. Kefka is the most memorable villain in the series for me, especially with a certain plot twist halfway through the game that's incredible ballsy of Square. The second half is basically open world too which is nice. Customization of characters is pretty limited though.
VII is...good. I like the story and the characters enough, but the game is INCREDIBLY easy if that matters to you and the graphics are very dated. Definitely worth playing though.
VIII I never finished. Has interesting customization but it's easy to take advantage of and the story never grabbed me.
IX has hilarious characters but also deals with some of the darkest themes in the series. Art style is throwback to older RPGs - I love it, some hate it (think the polarization Wind Waker got). Definitely a fan favorite, if not a critics favorite.
X is my second favorite game of all time. The story is wonderful and deals with lots of great themes very well, especially religion. The Sphere Grid lets you feel constantly rewarded with small stats increases instead of waiting 30 minutes to level up. Summon animations are badass. I'd recommend this one.

I'm starting to progress into Final Fantasy VII. Cloud is around level 14 right now. I am loving the game and wishing I had started playing this series sooner. I've always wished to play more turn based games considering how obsessed I was with pokemon games when I was younger. The story is great so far. The only downside I have had so far occurred last night when I spent about an hour stuck in the same area because I couldn't see a door on a train because of the pixel graphics. Other than that though, no problems yet.
Currently I just got back to sector 7 where Shinra is going to try and break the support beam and have the disk come down and crush sector 7 and blame it on avalanche. |

i love you right now, those games are RIDICULOUSLY good and immersive (even if TA and TA2 have shit stories). i was actually working on a final fantasy tactics advance hack, that balances the different job classes (unbreaks Mp and Speed stats), increases difficulty, boosts effects from equipment (to be more like FFTA2), greatly increases the amount of buyable equipment, and edits the job movesets (tinker doesn't have that shitty random target bullshit, instead induces statuses but with summon level AoE). |
Cygnatti
06.09.15 | not very familiar with the MGS franchise, however from what i've read, it seems like TTS changed things too much. the sound/music was very poorly updated (supposedly) and was somehow much easier? |

06.09.15 | "not very familiar with the MGS franchise, however from what i've read, it seems like TTS changed things too much. the sound/music was very poorly updated (supposedly) and was somehow much easier?"
They kept the map the same but added the gameplay of MGS2, hense people saying it was easier. But my gripe was with the awful Matrix-style slo-mo cutscenes and overdramatic shit they added to them. The voices were mostly changed and that ended up dramatically changing the atmosphere. It just wasn' good. At all.
As for FF getting remakes 1) we'd have voice-acting, potentially ruining how you would imagine a character to sound. 2) they'd no doubt add some contemperary gameplay features that would ruin what made the original so great, just so they can appeal to the younger generation, and 3) gameplay would have to be changed in the same vein of XIII, which just wouldn't appeal to me. Still, to each their own. But this franchise is dead in the water to me these days. |
AmericanFlagAsh
06.09.15 | I wouldn't mind no voice acting |
Feather
06.09.15 | I'd be fine with voice acting, but I think the reason I'm digging VII so much right now is the turn based gameplay. Cutscenes would be real badass in final fantasy though. |
Cygnatti
06.09.15 | let's hope they'd add a function where you can turn off the voice acting x.x
but anyone who digs the first 6 final fantasies, y'all should turn up Bravely Default. the gameplay and class system are very very good for an old-school JRPG (think final fantasy 5, but waaaaaaay better). the story is pretty nice until about 60-70% into the story where it gets really repetitive, but i dig the characters quite a bit. |

" Yes it is an amazingly satisfying game, sometimes I just wish it would guide me a little more (God knows what else I missed considering I missed getting Vincent and Yuffie). |

06.16.15 | You can still get them. At any time. |
AmericanFlagAsh
06.16.15 | Ok well not any time. But whenever you are free to explore the overworld. |
DungeonBoy
06.16.15 | If I remember correctly, they'll also be a similar level to you whenever you decide to get them. |
Feather
06.16.15 | @Flag and @Dungeonboy I just looked up exactly how to get both of them and it shouldn't be an issue. Also I watched a youtube video to see what level I can expect vincent at and it appears that he is whatever level either Cloud or your highest character is at, thats all that I was really worried about. |

06.16.15 | VIII is the game of my childhood/ teenager days.
VII gets a remake and is the most popular in the franchise. Won't make a bad start with that. |
Crymsonblaze
06.16.15 | VI, VII, and X are fantastic.
IV is also great (and VIII and IX are pretty well-loved but I'm not a big fan).
The rest range from okay (I, V) to mediocre (II, III), to bad (XII, XIII). |

06.19.15 | UPDATE: I am on disc 2 still. I killed Diamond Weapon last night (he comes to attack Midgar after you find the key of the ancients and play this music in the forgotten city). I also got BEHEMOTH ZERO which is pretty bad ass. Still loving the game and the story. I have my final team set at Cloud, Red XIII and Vincent. I am around level 48. |

06.19.15 | Kupo! |
DungeonBoy
06.19.15 | Kupo! [2] I always liked Cloud, Vincent, and Barret. I wanted to like Cait Sith but his stupid roulette limit always pissed me off. |

06.19.15 | Kupo! |
Ninjask
06.19.15 | The remake better stay turn-based, I swear, kupo. |

06.19.15 | V was my first, but I'd suggest IV, VII, or VIII. Also if you want to get into the lore through a rather different game structure, check out Tactics. |
Feather
06.19.15 | I actually hate Cait Sith. All around terrible character and to make it even worse, its a spy. wtf. |
danielito19
06.19.15 | tactics series is so much fun! sunk at least 1000 hours into those three games |
Muppelope
06.19.15 | I have tactics but I've yet to play it. Been playing fire emblem awakening for the past week or so and it's easily one of my favorite handheld games of all time. Maybe even my favorite. I seriously need to finish 9, too. I stopped like halfway through when school started up again last year lol. |
danielito19
06.19.15 | tactics > fire emblem for two reasons:
tactics has unit speed as a stat - turn order is determined by this, rather than "your turn" & "computer turn"
risk of permadeath is a lot lower in tactics. |
Muppelope
06.19.15 | I'll play tactics as soon as I finish 9 and tell you what I think. I'm sure I'll love it though. |
EnyaFangirl
06.19.15 | Whaaaat? Cait Sith was easily the dopest dude in the game. |
Crymsonblaze
06.19.15 | Tactics is an amazing game, especially with the PSP translation. Of course, the frame rate took a huge dive due to what I assume were coding problems, because there's no way the PSP was having trouble running it, but take the good with the bad I suppose.
I didn't like the more child-friendly approach that the second and third Tactics games took. Really I just want a story like the first one full of political intrigue and whatnot. |
