05.28.15 | Beherit are definitely second wave, they have one ep from 1990 which is pretty much the worst thing ever and one from 1991, haven't heard that one. Their first album is from 1993, also their sound is the most second wave bm you'll prob gonna hear. Haven't heard these Samael ep's, but 2 demo-ep's from 1989 don't make the band automatically a first wave band i mean Darkthrone have ep's from the late 80's too. |
adr
05.28.15 | They never released anything with the name The Lord Diabolus in the 80's. This is a compilation released in 1991 so they still don't count as first wave band :/;/ |
pissbore
05.28.15 | Sodom is in my opinion the best first wave black metal band
In the sign of evil will never be topped, '84 til infinity motherfucker
Great list |

05.28.15 | Some of these are questionable, I realize, but note the description:
"Some cool first wave black metal bands AND other early influential extreme metal."
I've always thought of Bathory's Under The Sign and Blood Fire Death as being the albums that started the second wave sound, though I guess I'd still have to give credit to Mayhem as being the first real second wave band imo. Also, I'd describe Beherit as second wave Finnish style, at least with Drawing Down the Moon onward. |

05.28.15 | Thanks for the recs and compliments though! |

05.28.15 | Ehhhhh, we may agree to disagree there. After Deathcrush, Mayhem lived on reputation (and bootleg albums) for a long time, but they still really pionerred the second wave scene. Fenriz has gone on record saying that Live in Leipzig was the first second wave album. |
Anthemic
05.28.15 | It was either in his black metal university videos or in the commentary tracks for under a funeral moon, but he does say that LIL was the start of the second wave. |
Anthemic
05.28.15 | Yeah around 21 minutes into this video he says that Live in Leipzig was the first Norwegian black metal album, not A Blaze or Burzum's s/t.

05.28.15 | keep in mind, as knowledgeable as he is, at the end of the day, fenriz is a man with an opinion
there truly is no defined line between first and second wave, but i would definitely agree that UTSOTBM set the bar which most "second wave" bands followed |
Anthemic
05.28.15 | For sure, I only mentioned Fenriz because OvDeath's opinion was that the second wave started with Darkthrone. But yeah there is no dividing line set in stone, everyone approaches the music from a different perspective. |
Anthemic
05.28.15 | Also, I don't know how I forgot to add Blasphemy to the list, derp. |

05.29.15 | List needs seven churches and abominations of desolation |

05.29.15 | just out of curiosity, what about Mayhems music makes it fall under the first-wave sound? And I'm not trying to dispute anything or argue here, i just always thought they were second-wave. |
Anthemic
05.29.15 | I think everything they wrote post-deathcrush was solid second wave material. |
