My Top 15 Bassist

A list of my favourite bassist and whether they have influenced my playing style or how tone development
1Justin Chancellor, Tool

The way Justin plays really just made me want to play bass more, his difficult lines and amazing tone make the ultimate bass sound
2Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Although I dont listen to the Chilis much anymore, Flea's style as I was learning as well as his slap style got me thinking about different ways to play bass
3Ben Kenney, Incubus

I was more a fan of old Incubus, but Ben brought in a really smooth tone and was perfect for Incubus' more recent albums. Such a groovy player.
4Alex Katunich (Dirk Lance), Incubus

Early Incubus bass lines just made my jaw drop, some of the slapped lines on Fungus Amongus are amazing considering how old he was.
5Jaco Pastorius, Solo/Weather Report

For being the genius he was and how he made the bass a lead instrument in its own right. His signature sound really made an impression on me. Barbary Coast is just a stunning groove.
6Eddie Breckenridge, Thrice

In terms of tone I love the sound Eddie gets and how it has matured throughout there albums, the dirtier alternative sound is aweome
7Matt Williams, He is Legend

One of my favourtie bands and I love how versatile the bass lines are throughout the albums, there is always a great bass line to compliment the songs and it really makes them stand out for me.
8Scott Reeder, Kyuss

Such an original tone, turning the mid up really high it gives such an amazing signature sound.
9Chris Wolstenholme, Muse

Muse' music really got me into using effects and the bass lines in Absolution especially just hold down the song and soar on their own on occasion.
10Roger Waters, Pink Floyd

Such a great player and song writer, the bass lines on Dark Side of the Moon really stand out and anyone can pick out the line to Money.
11Tim Commerford, Audioslave/Rage Against the Machine

Tim has such an amazing intuition on bass and connects so well with the drums, they are so tight live. The bass lines are always so cleanly heard and allow Tom Morello to just do his stuff.
12Damon Minchella, Ocean Colour Scene

The bass lines throughout early Ocean Colour Scene were so different from anything in Britpop at the time and it made me stand up and want to play bass,
13John Paul Jones, Led Zepplin/Them Crooked Vultures

I loved John's attitude to bass and how his style was so smooth
14Tim Payne, Thursday

Its great to hear audiable bass in rock and in Thursday the bass lines are always there and sound amazing. The tone is so clear yet distorted. I love this sound.
15Mike Kerr, Royal Blood

Royal Blood have put a unique twist on bass and drum duos. The use of pedals and grooves to create such a great sound is amazing
