| Top 10 80s Metal Records
People always raise an eyebrow when I tell them my favourite decade for music (by a LONG way) is the 80s. They're thinking, Cyndi Lauper? A-Ha? Kylie fuckin' Minogue? Impossibly long reverb on snare drums? Wearing Jackets rolled up to the elbows?
Alas, no. Heavy metal attained perfection by 1988, and in my humble opinion nothing since has come close to these ten albums, the gems of a golden age for metal. | 1 | | Iron Maiden The Number of the Beast
Run to the Hills. Number of the Beast. Children of the Damned. 22 Acacia Avenue. The Prisoner. Hallowed Be Thy Name. Like so many of Maiden's albums, The Number of the Beast delivers classic after classic, wreathed in an atmosphere of mystique and heavy metal clout that is still unrivalled. 'Arry's finger-twisting bass on Run to the Hills, Dave and Adrian's flawless twin-guitar execution in Hallowed be Thy Name, and of course, Brucie's scream on Number of the Beast (best scream ever on record? Oh yeah, I went there) are just some of the magical moments that for me make this the definitive 80s metal album. | 2 | | Metallica Ride the Lightning
Thrash will not be forgotten. It's enjoying something of a comeback now, and for me this is the Holy Bible of thrash. On Ride the Lightning one finds such striking originality, a trait lost in a lot of music today (and a lot of the other thrash classics of the 80s). Look no further than the sparkling intro to Fight Fire with Fire, which, while extremely melodic, somehow sets the tone for the album. Call of Ktulu is similarly delicate and well-arranged. And it's the contrasts - from the neck snapping Fight Fire With Fire to the fist-pumpingly rhythmic For Whom the Bell tolls, to the charming guitar lines in Fade to Black, Ride the Lightning is a thrashtastic delight. | 3 | | Judas Priest British Steel | 4 | | Ozzy Osbourne Blizzard of Ozz | 5 | | Iron Maiden Powerslave | 6 | | Slayer Reign in Blood | 7 | | Metallica Master of Puppets | 8 | | Megadeth Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? | 9 | | Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell | 10 | | Motley Crue Dr Feelgood | |

06.29.08 | The '80s was a strange decade for Metal. I think of it as Metal's best and worst decade at the same time. It's the best due to the emerging Thrash Metal bands, Iron Maiden, Dio, etc. Unfortunately it's also the decade that is home to Hair Metal. Anyway, good list. | goneshootin22
07.28.08 | Yeah A-ha and Cyndi Lauper kick all sorts of asses. But this is a solid list for the most part. I would put Powerslave as #1, and I would have British Steele taken off the list an replaced by Screaming For Vengance. |
