12.28.14 | I disagree with agalloch being cascadian. |
VinVal
12.28.14 | Portland is indeed part of the cascadian region of the US but as far as agalloch not sound sounding like any
of the other bands listed, i do agree |
Keyblade
12.28.14 | Very nice list, got all that I can think of. I think 21 is really underrated |
Crysis
12.28.14 | Leviathan, Xasthur and Lurker of Chalice are not cascadian bm in the least. Nor are they located in the
cascades as Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice are from San Francisco and Xasthur is from LA. |
Gameofmetal
12.28.14 | Some of these aren't cascadian and it's not a generic and derivative genre. |
Artuma
12.28.14 | cool list, i need to check 14 |
TheSpirit
12.28.14 | Cascading really isn't about the location as much as it is the sound. Agalloch, Leviathon and Xasthur are not even close to Cascadian black metal and their inclusion on the list is almost laughable. Props on Threnos though. |
Crysis
12.28.14 | Regardless, SF is on the coast and many many miles from the mountains themselves. Even further, not all
black metal bands from the region of the cascades are cascadian black metal as the genre has a VERY
discernible sound, one that sounds like neither Leviathan nor Lurker of Chalice in any way. |
Crysis
12.28.14 | welp you deleted your comment vinval but that was in reply to you saying San Francisco was part of cascadia |
VinVal
12.28.14 | @crysis northern california is sometimes considered part of the cascades, as far as Xasthur goes you may be right |
VinVal
12.28.14 | Sorry yea i felt like i talked about the movement in the previous comment instead of the region which is what i thought gave the genre the name but i do understand what you mean as far as the "cascadian" sound goes |

DoctorDoom
12.28.14 | Regardless of sub-genre or whatever, number five is incredible. That was the album that made me finally "get" black metal. Still one of my favorites. |

01.03.15 | Props on Threnos though [2] That demo needs more attention, given that it like started the whole style.
This "scene" sort of died but there are still a few bands putting out stuff. Ash Borer might have a new one this year, Alda are finishing theirs, and Addaura are supposed to have an EP or something finishing up soon. Leviathan also has a new one coming out soon, and Fauna have at least one full-length of material that they'll record sometime in prob the next 5-ish years. |
VinVal
01.03.15 | ive heard of new leviathan but stoked to hear of new ash borer, addaura and fauna |
DoctorDoom
01.03.15 | Ash Borer and Leviathan records...my kvlt bod is ready. |
zaruyache
01.03.15 | During the summer Ash Borer put out a blog post saying they were going to retire back to their homes to start writing and planning new stuff, so I assume that means we'll get an LP this year. |
DoctorDoom
01.03.15 | Hope it sounds like their older material. |
zaruyache
01.03.15 | I don't care what style they do as long as it has a better recording quality than their last lp/ep. Raw as the first LP or the demo/split and I'll be fine with whatever riffs they write. Cold of Ages just wasn't evil enough. |

Think a style based on Wolves In The Throne Room. It's super drone-y, repetitive, melodic and usually features a decent amount of acoustic breaks. While that tends to describe black metal in general, there is a certain "feel" that really defines Cascadian black metal bands. |
Hyperion1001
01.04.15 | just listen to 5 and youll understand |
zaruyache
01.04.15 | You should listen to 5 regardless since it's an absolute classic but it's like 20% similar to actual cascadian bm. Actual cascadian style pretty much starts with Two Hunters. And then Ash Borer's s/t was basically the same thing but a lot angrier. |
