Holidays

As a break from all these 2014 lists, how about a holidays playlist? It's summer in Australia, perfect beach weather and parties every few days. Has been a long, hard year and it's time to celebrate
1Kanye West
The College Dropout

The New Workout Plan is an anthem for most of my friends. I never used to enjoy Kanye that much, but as more of his songs became associated with good times, he grew on me. How I get a bit of a grin whenever half of the songs from this album come on
2Future Islands
Singles

Seasons (Waiting On You) saved me from getting bashed after the first party of this holiday season. It was 3am, wandering home with 2 of my scrawny friends and we got confronted by a group of lads. One of them was playing this on their phone, and my friend knew the song well and decided to start singing and dancing. The lads decided we were alright and let us go. Really weird night
3 Jack's Mannequin
Everything In Transit

It wouldn't be summer without a little bit of pop-punk. This album just screams holidays at me, it was one of my first pop-punk albums and will always be my favorite
4Nujabes
Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection

I never get tired of Nujabes, and the holidays are the perfect time to put him on and switch off. So damn smooth
5The Avalanches
Since I Left You

Something a little closer to home. So many good vibes on this album, it's one that my parents used to play when I was young and will always hold a special place for me
6Lemaitre
Relativity 3

Short EP that's incredibly easy to love
7Andy Mckee
Art Of Motion

Holidays means lots of spare time, which means a lot more time for hobbies, which means lots of guitar playing for me. If you add up the amount of time I've spent practicing songs from a specific album, this one would probably come out on top. Musically it's more of an autumn album, but it will always be a summertime album for me
8Taylor Swift
1989

The majority of the people I know only listen to pop, but luckily, this album is huge. It's catchy, lovable and I'm so grateful for this album coming when it did. This album is going to get some heavy rotation across the new years period
9Streetlight Manifesto
Everything Goes Numb

Loudly playing ska is so much fun in summer. It can be hard to listen to during university semesters, since the catchy horns getting stuck in your head make it impossible to study, but it can be jammed without a care over the holidays
10Bomb The Music Industry!
Vacation

This band is the definition of fun. If I can't decide what I want to listen to, I open their discography and hit shuffle
11Bobby Shmurda
Shmurda She Wrote

MITCH CAUGHT A BODY BOUT A WEEK AGOOOO
12Iron Maiden
Powerslave

Similar to ska, holidays means no worrying about getting riffs caught in your head and distracting from study. This was one of my very first metal albums, given to me by my guitar teacher almost 9 years ago, and remains my favorite Maiden and favorite classic heavy metal album.
13Dio
Holy Diver

On the topic of riffs: motherfuckin riffs. I still can't decide is this or Rising is Dio at his best, but god damn this hits the spot
14Camel
Mirage

The best prog album for summer. Those flutes really add something special
15Frank Turner
Love, Ire & song

So many feel good anthems, and also one of my favorite live acts. Everyone singing along and dancing to Photosynthesis and If Ever I Stray is an experience to remember.
16Kashiwa Daisuke
9 Songs

Kashiwa goes full j-pop and accidentally crafts one of the funnest runs of music released in 2014. Sure, the latter half is more serious in tone, but it's frontloaded with unabashedly sugary sweet pop that gets me in all the right places.
17Anamanaguchi
Endless Fantasy

Speaking of absurdly fun, sugary sweet music; I feel like music that is fun for the sake of being fun is often ignored in the critical music community, but it was good to see this one get so much love around here. Every song is anthemic, catchy and memorable
18Yellowcard
Southern Air

So far, this list hasn't really been indicative of my summer listening. I listen to unhealthy amounts of nostalgic pop-punk over this period
19Gates
Bloom and Breathe

This one is also going to be heavily on my rotation this summer, perfect combination of emotional delivery and shimmering post-rock
20Guthrie Govan
Erotic Cakes

My absolute favorite solo guitar album. Diverse and upbeat, with a huge range of guitar styles and some of the funnest guitar of all time. Even if I think 'Cliffs of Dover' is the definitive summer guitar song, I can never bring myself to switch this album off halfway, so I'll palce it here instead of Eric Johnson. Wonderful Slippery Thing is unreal
