| R&b Post 2009 (favourites)
For something that's probably become my favourite go-to genre, I wanted to comment on some of rrmy favourite records over these last few years. I've been interested in the backlash over the terms rr'experimental R&B' and 'alternative R&B' and perhaps this list serves to demonstrate how wide a rrspectrum the genre has, not just an 'alternative' aside. I feel the only real pre-req for good R&B is ra decent voice, for example there's not a bad one here IMO. Recs Welcome! | 1 | | Janelle Monae The Archandroid
To be honest I found this record better than the Electric Lady, but then, I still pretty
much adore everything she?s ever released. The Archandroid is structured a lot better for
me, wherein the record seems to wind down at the at right moments (Cold War, Say
You?ll Go, Neon Valley Street), and simple lines like 'Love is not a fantasy / It's more for
you, you and me' glow with something real and affecting. And goddamn. Those pipes. | 2 | | Aloe Blacc Good Things | 3 | | Beyonce 4 | 4 | | The Weeknd House of Balloons
Those three mixtapes hit me like a ton of bricks three years ago. I hadn?t heard anything
like it. I?m still hanging out for another one (Kiss Land was bitterly disappointing). | 5 | | Drake Take Care
Check it for lols: http://pigeonsandplanes.com/2013/09/drake-lyrics-text/ | 6 | | Solange True
It maybe only be an EP, but Losing You is a jam. She knows how to work a crowd too,

I don't this album is super-impressive when listened as a whole, like most pop-albums.
However, these songs really, really affecting when listened to by themselves. Each song
could be a radio-killer in themselves. Candles In the Sun is pensive; Pussy is Mine is
cheeky, forlorn then charming; Adorn is the perfect pop-single. Miguel does both R.Kelly
and Usher without the inconsistency, and then adds something of himself as well. A
must listen. | 8 | | Frank Ocean Channel Orange
Trick: head to Frank's blog at frank ocean.com. actually add a /page/20 to that URL.
Scroll down a little. Yeah, see that video there? Click Play. | 9 | | JMSN ?Pllaj?? | 10 | | Sampha Dual
There was a period this year where I was listening to 'Happens' and 'Too Soon' every
day of the month. There?s just something about how expressive it is, and I find myself
anticipating every run of falsetto notes every time. As much as it is fun just writing
music for the sake of music, there?s something so inherently better when listening to
something with a bit of passion behind it, with a strong experienced meaning to it. | 11 | | Rhye Woman | 12 | | Blood Orange Cupid Deluxe
Raise your pinot grigio higho this one's for my gs oon the noorth sideeeee | 13 | | Justin Timberlake The 20/20 Experience | 14 | | The-Dream IV Play | 15 | | James Blake Overgrown
And we lay nocturnal / speculate what we feel | 16 | | SZA Z
Really surprised by the low ratings for this. Both smoothly palatable and lyrically
challenging, 'Z' is a wonder of haze and cast-out childhood memories. Rowe's melodies
rarely ever fall flat, and her lyrics are oft-times cutting and intimidating ('I can't
remember the last time I took love from anyone called daddy / who's got one anyway? /
Not me) SZA, like the best of vocalists, is easily distinguishable with her voice, and
pitchfork's remark of a lack of personality is really, really off the mark. Also love how
songs split into whole other jams at their former's conclusion. Just impressive all around. | 17 | | How to Dress Well What Is This Heart?
This record really, really hinges on whether you like Krell's voice. The dude has a brilliant
knack for melody and texture. He also seems to be in another space mentally - watch
some of his interviews. | 18 | | Banks Goddess | 19 | | FKA Twigs LP1
It?s hard to be this sexy without becoming overly explicit and crude (like The-Dream and
newer Weeknd tracks, for example). Everything here is sexually surreal; it alludes,
suggests, allegorizes - the key here is the restraint and control Twigs exercises over the
material. On EP1 - ?How?s that? is a coy nudge to almost-but-not-quite-there bedroom
talk, while songs like Papi Pacify are daring and provoking under their polished glamour.
with this in mind, LP1 is a further step up from that material. For a genre that is all
about the sex, this, for me, is the pinnacle. | |
