09.26.14 | simply cause almost every list today is pretty bad (except for the Radiohead thing) I thought, I could just contribute to that | AmericanFlagAsh
09.26.14 | I really like Dirty Diana | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Yeah, pretty much the only track with the "Bad" image working | ArsMoriendi
09.26.14 | Cool list. I only know 7 songs on here, but seeing as I know 1-6 and 8, 4 is probably my 1. | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Interesting, everyone loving the track where MJ pretends to know something about sex with groupies | Froot
09.26.14 | Everything's p. much out of order in my case, but this (4.5) is still his best, album-wise. HIStory (4) has his best songs, but has too much fodder towards the end. This is more consistent. | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | It's actually still the only full record I know by him (although he released two thirds of his work as singles anyway) and would say 4.5 is really a bit too generous. A 3.5 for me, although I don't like it that much, but it's undeniably great music at times. | Froot
09.26.14 | I have it at 4.5 for the aforementioned consistency, Quincy Jones' production, which feels varied,
evolved and all over the place, the hooks, MJ really pushing himself on a vocal level, and the album's
overall replay value.
It would be a 5 from me honestly if it could figure out what it wanted to do with itself on a
songwriting and conceptual level. It builds itself up as this cheesy, but still more aggressive and
direct entity, but then just reverts back to traditional, sentimental MJ R&B by the 3/4 point, albeit
with a more dynamic edge than its predecessors. | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Agree completely, though
a) the strange mash up of different themes and atmospheres you mentioned and the already strange image he obviously aimed for are just, well, I can't take it serious
b) I really think there's too much filler on it. Varied yes, but Liberian Girl or Speed Demon are things I can't work with, so to say. They aren't just forgettable, that wouldn't be too much of a problem, but it's really difficult to listen to them and not cringe, at least for me.
and c) I think at times the production and the overtly sterile sound is a bit too much, although it works whenever it is fits the songs theme (Bad, Smooth Criminal), but songs like Another Part Of Me, Just Good Friends or Man In The Mirror, albeit potentially really brilliant, could have used a lighter tone, a little less of the typical 80's electronic machinery. They all struggled with that back then, but for example Phil Collins managed that unwieldy sound a bit better on "No Jacket Required" for me.

09.26.14 | Goddammit. A stupid anime redhead list has more comments than this. WHAT IS THIS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! | scottpilgrim10
09.26.14 | 4 is my favorite too. 4 and 2 are in their own league imo | Muisc4Life26
09.26.14 | 2 is 1 | Froot
09.27.14 | 7 is 1 | tmagistrelli
10.29.14 | 7 is 1 [2] | MO
10.29.14 | dirty diana is such a jam | Keyblade
10.29.14 | "It's actually still the only full record I know by him "
Dude you need to get on Off the Wall and especially Thriller
Nice list btw | KrazyKris
10.29.14 | Don't know, not like I care so much about Michael Jackson that they are like top priority for me. Even more so as he released about two thirds of his songs as singles, so I know many of them. But I'll get there eventually. | wtferrothorn
11.07.14 | I know and really like all but 11 and 7. I remember I got a compilation of all of MJ's music videos (Look up Michael Jackson's Vision. That's the one) and that's how I really got into MJ. I only knew, like, the HUGE songs (Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, Bad) but I never checked out the others. I thought the DVD was cool, but not really worth 30 bucks on Amazon( I got it as a birthday gift.) | someguest
11.07.14 | bad ranking |
