06.18.14 Criminally Under-rated Artists

Criminally Under-rated Artists

Artists of all genres that are not short of brilliant who have somehow been over-looked by the music press or not given the attention they so do deserve.
2016 Horse Power
19Cursive

That band that came out around the same time as Bright Eyes that did not get the
same attention
18Rites of Spring

Said to be the first Emo band
17The Housemartins

A band that sounds a bit like The Smiths.
16Heatmiser

Elliott Smith's first band before his solo career
15The Boys Next Door

Nick Cave's very first band. That produced some good music that sounded nothing
like the Bad Seeds.
14The Chameleons

Another Manchester band that was over-looked.
13Magazine

The Manchester punk scene produced a ridiculous amount of talent. Due to that
this band was underlooked
12Tim Buckley

His son Jeff is well known for being basically a musical genius. However his father
had a very original sound.
11The Monochrome Set

A virtually unknown British art-rock/post-punkish band.
10X-Ray Specs

A female fronted U.K punk band that did not make it over to the states.
9Whiskeytown

Ryan Adams somewhat got the coverage he deserved yet his band did not. Before
the singer-songwriter genius Adams was known, this was his band.
8Mission to Burma

One of the great America punk bands that were not given the props they so well
deserved. They have sort of an art-rock sound.
7Jackson C. Frank

Another over-looked 1960's folk singer.
6Texas is the Reason

They are one of the pioneers of the emo genre yet are not one of the first bands
that come to mind when mentioning the word emo.
5The Gun Club

This is a wonderful L.A. based punk-band who got some media attention but far
less than deserved. The singer has since dies and left a wonderful collection of
songs behind
4Phil Ochs

He was around at the same time as Bob Dylan at his prime. His lyrics were a bit
darker and more topical than Dylan. Unlike Dylan he would make little compromises
and the music press took little notice. Plus he had better vocal ability and range
than Dylan.
3Manic Street Preachers

While they made it sort of big in the U.K. and Europe, they could never properly
break into the states. It's sad because the soulful vocals and deep lyrics should be
in more Americans music collections.
2New Model Army

A wonderful British post-punk band with traces of folk
1Nike Drake

While he is known, he should be a house-hold name. His talent has brilliant.
