The US funded and armed the Mujihadeen in Afghanistan and had various CIA assets in afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war of the 80s. The Mujihadeen was essentially the precursor to the Taliban, and thus had links to Al Qaeda and Bin Laden ( who was part of the Mujihadeen). So the theory is Bin Laden was a CIA asset. You can just call anything a conspiracy theory, though, and Hitchens did. He was a hilarious character but also a bad author who makes giant claims for attention and then doesn't offer any evidence whatsoever to back up his ideas. none of the books I read of his even had sources... you couldn't pass a highschool class with some of the shit he's published.
