Emotional, Beautiful, Evocative, Otherworldly...

Some of my all time favourite songs that fit one or more of the above descriptions. Songs that evoke strong emotions or that simply take me to another place.
18Gimu
A Season In Your Soul

"Days Beginning at Lunch Time" | Could have picked a number of tracks from this album, it's some of the most gorgeous ambient out there. This piece really is something special though, both haunting and upliftingly beautiful at the same time.
17The 13th Floor Elevators
Easter Everywhere

"Dust" | Undoubtedly one of the most captivating pieces of 60's psychedelia I've ever heard. Eriksen's superb lyrics combined with Sutherland's gentle guitar licks and of course Hall's electric jug makes for an otherworldly listening experience.
16Jethro Tull
Minstrel in the Gallery

"Requiem" |
One of Tull's most delicate folk songs. Palmer's tasteful orchestration is one of the highlights of the song along with Anderson's vocals and of course his lyrics which are unusually simplistic for him.
15Grouper
A I A

"Vapor Trails" |
'Ethereal' is really the only word I can think of to describe this. Liz Harris' hauntingly beautiful vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the song's otherworldly ambience.
14Venn Rain
Diamond Dust

"The Hermetic" | Ambient drones that are simply not of this world. The highlight from one of my favourite ambient releases, which also happens to have some of my favourite artwork to grace an ambient album.
13Mathias Grassow
Transpersonal

"Evoking the Stillness" | One of my absolute favourite ambient pieces. The song's spacious soundscapes are incredibly evocative and inspire reflective thought as well as evoking mental imagery reminiscent to that depicted in Transpersonal's cover art.
12Camel
The Snow Goose

"The Snow Goose" | Some of the most gorgeous and transcendent guitar playing I've ever heard. Latimer has always played with a great amount feeling and emotion but his guitar playing has never sounded more beautiful than it does on this outstanding instrumental.
11Fleetwood Mac
The Pious Bird of Good Omen

"Albatross" | There really was no one better than Peter Green (in his Mac days) when it came to melodic, emotionally evocative guitar playing. This beautiful instrumental is possibly the best representation of his unique, gentle touch as well as his talent for composition.
10Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith

"The Biggest Lie" | Features some his best and most evocative lyrics and one of his most emotional vocal performances. My personal favourite Elliott song by quite some distance.
9Nick Drake
Five Leaves Left

"Time Has Told Me" | My favourite Nick Drake song. I've found myself connecting with this song on an emotional level more than I have with any of his others, which is saying a lot for an artist with so many deeply emotional songs.
8Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks

"You're A Big Girl Now" | One of Dylan's most emotional and intimate songs. He may not have been a great singer but he excelled at letting his emotion be heard through his voice, not just through his words.
7Benoit Pioulard
Lasted

"A Coin on the Tongue" |
A beautifully atmospheric and evocative song that represents feelings of euphoric relief. Musically it draws together everything that Benoit does best into one expertly crafted song.
6Ulver
Shadows of the Sun

"Like Music" |
Exemplary of Ulver's ability to create unique otherworldly atmospheres, this song, particularly the opening vocal section, is one of the most emotive moments in Ulver's discography.
5Witxes
Sorcery/Geography

"Unlocation" | This was one of the first ambient pieces I really connected with on an emotional level and still remains one of my all time favourites. The acoustic guitar playing in the outro is beautiful in its simplicity.
4Fleetwood Mac
Greatest Hits (CBS)

"Man of the World" | One of the saddest and most emotional songs I've ever heard. Green has always sung and played with the upmost sincerity which makes songs such as this all the more heart wrenching and powerful.
3Bob Dylan
Bringing It All Back Home

"It's All Over Now (Baby Blue)" | One of the most beautiful songs Dylan has ever written, featuring some of his most moving lyrics. Of all Dylan's songs this is perhaps the most deserving of being referred to as lyrically perfect.
2Genesis
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

"The Lamia" | Deeply atmospheric and lyrically surreal, The Lamia really does take the listener to another place. Gabriel's vocal performance is among his very best and Hackett's beautifully composed guitar solo stands as one of my all time favourite solos.
1Jethro Tull
Heavy Horses

"Moths" | Lyrical and musical perfection. Some of the most beautifully evocative lyrics I've ever heard accompanied by delicate and faultless musicianship. David Palmer's brilliant orchestration helps elevate the song to even greater heights.
