Death doom metal | 11 | | Hookworms Pearl Mystic
Psychedelic rock, ambient | 10 | | Grouper The Man Who Died in His Boat
The ambient, psychedelic folk heard throughout Grouper's latest release is of such high quality that it's hard to believe that this is merely a collection of b-sides from 2008's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill. Songs like the gorgeous title-track and the infectious "Cloud in Places" are simply stunning. | 9 | | Vali Skogslandskap
After nine years in the wilderness Vali finally releases a follow up to 2004's brilliant Forlatt. The instrumental folk heard on Skogslandskap is every bit as gorgeous as it was on Forlatt, with Vali's acoustic guitar playing sounding as emotionally evocative as ever. | 8 | | Wolf People Fain
Wolf People deliver another excellent piece of psychedelic folk-rock. Somewhat darker in tone than its predecessor, musically Fain builds on the style of Steeple (2010), adding a slightly more experimental edge. This more adventurous side is best heard during the instrumental sections of some of the lengthier tracks such as "When the Fire is Dead in the Great" and during the outro of "Theif". | 7 | | Benoit Pioulard Hymnal
Pioulard's first full-length since 2010's Lasted, delivers more folky, dream pop mixed with beautifully crafted ambient soundscapes. From the infectious vocal melodies of "Hawkeye" to the gorgeous ambience of "Gospel", Hymnal sees Benoit doing what he does best, creating an irresistible atmosphere, further enhanced by his unique use of field recordings. | 6 | | Causa Sui Euporie Tide
A master class in instrumental psych, Euporie Tide is every bit as engaging as the Summer Sessions albums and a significant improvement over 2011's Pewt'r Sessions. The album sees the band switch between heavy stoner-fuelled riffs to more melodic psychedelic passages with ease. Album opener and standout track, "Homage" is a strong contender for psychedelic rock song of the year, incorporating everything that is good about Causa Sui's sound into one 10-minute song. | 5 | | Tim Hecker Virgins
With Virigins, Hecker has created a superb album of swirling ambience and haunting piano melodies that makes for one of 2013's most captivating ambient releases. From the dark, melancholic intensity of "Live Room" to the beautiful, almost uplifting "Amps, Drugs, Harmonium", Virgins drifts through various mood changes almost seamlessly. | 4 | | Pond (AUS) Hobo Rocket
While 2012's excellent Beard, Wives, Denim was very much dominated by refined, poppy song writing, Hobo Rocket is a much more adventurous affair and is all the better for it. The intense "Aloneaflameaflower" features some of the band's heaviest moments to date while album closer "Midnight Mass" finishes with a beautifully transcendent instrumental section which provides a strong contrast to the dark, almost Sabbath-esque sound of the song's first half. | 3 | | Raum The Event of Your Leaving
The Event of Your Leaving is a collaboration between Liz Harris (aka Grouper) and Jefre Cantu Ledesma, which sees the duo deliver carefully crafted ambient soundscapes inspired by the work of visual artist Vija Celmins. Tracks such as "In Stellar Orbit" and "In Held Company" reflect the mood of Celmins' artwork perfectly whilst standing out as some of the most enchanting pieces the two artists have ever recorded. | 2 | | Ulver Messe I.X-VI.X
With Messe, Ulver have delivered one of their most ambitious albums to date and also one of their most rewarding. Recorded with the Troms? Chamber Orchestra, Messe is a fantastic blend of classical and electronic music that stands along-side the likes of Shadows of the Sun and Perdition City as one of the band's finest albums. The superb "Glamour Box" and the dramatic "Son Of Man" are particular highlights. | 1 | | Witxes A Fabric of Beliefs
Even more adventurous than its predecessor, A Fabric of Beliefs should cement Witxes' place as one of the most exciting and intriguing artists in the current ambient/experimental music scene. The album's opening suite, the three part "Through Abraxas", stands as one 2013's most compelling pieces of music, with the remainder of the album containing many equally captivating moments. | |

12.23.13 | Hey Jamie there was a Jethro Tull song in the episode of the Simpsons I saw today | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Really? What song? | Rowan5215
12.23.13 | Thick as a Brick, Part 1 I believe
Martin was playing it on flute and then Lisa knocked him out and then it was playing over the end credits, I was like damn | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Wow that's awesome. | Rowan5215
12.23.13 | Fuck yeah it is
Just thought you should know that, carry on | MO
12.23.13 | great list man, 37 represent m/ | conesmoke
12.23.13 | I knew hobo rocket would be in your top 5, the mixing at the end of giant tortoise is incredibly well done, great album. A few of my mates saw Pond a couple days ago, unfortunately i was working :( but they said it ruled m/ | manosg
12.23.13 | I've only heard three of those I think but it's normal since I'm not so much into ambient music. I expected you to have Fates Warning on here too tbh. | RogueNine
12.23.13 | 40 has some great stuff. Is there something very similar here that you could rec me? | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Helly yeah MO, Stanko is the man.
@conesmoke: Yeah I fucking love the outro of Giant Tortoise. Damn that sucks that you couldn't go. I'd love to see Pond live at some point, dunno whether they'll be coming to England any time soon though.
@manosg: I heard a few tracks from the new FW album I think but I never got around to hearing it in its entirety for some reason. | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | @Rogue: Similar to 40? Erm a lot of the other psych albums I've listened to from this year have been instrumental barring a few exceptions (4, 8 and 42). I think you'd like 4, even though it's not that similar to Fuzz per se. Some of the songs on 42 have a somewhat similar vibe to Fuzz, particularly Lolita so maybe check that out too. | BigPleb
12.23.13 | Nice to see 4 here, awesome record.
Great list, didn't expect anything less tbh. | RogueNine
12.23.13 | Instrumental is just fine with me! Thanks man, I'll check those out. | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Thanks Pleb.
@Rogue: I completely forgot about 19, definitely check that one out too.
As for the instrumental ones check out 6 and 25. The reason I ignored the instrumental ones in my previous comment is because they're not exactly comparable to Fuzz as they're not really song-based like 40 is. | KILL
12.23.13 | this is prob a gd list | apert
12.23.13 | its funny how because no one has heard the majority of these albums everyone assumes its a great list. only heard 2 albums here so can't really comment | KILL
12.23.13 | yea ive heard like 2 records from this year | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Haha thanks Cap. | Nagrarok
12.23.13 | I expected to have heard a few more of these, but 24, 19, 12, 8, 5, 2 and 1 are all great so nice list. With all the praise you're giving it I'll make sure to revisit that Witxes album. | MO
12.23.13 | "its funny how because no one has heard the majority of these albums everyone assumes its a great list. only heard 2 albums here so can't really comment"
yes that's exactly what's going on | ViperAces
12.23.13 | what did you think about the new mbv, darkthrone, sabbath and fates? | Keyblade
12.23.13 | "its funny how because no one has heard the majority of these albums everyone assumes its a great list. only heard 2 albums here so can't really comment"
Or most of these are personal favs as well and will end up on my own list? | zakalwe
12.23.13 | 40 was in my top ten. Quality album. | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | "what did you think about the new mbv, darkthrone, sabbath and fates?"
For some reason I've never been that into MBV (or shoegaze in general), I listened to a few songs from their new one and it sounded decent but I didn't feel compelled to check out the whole album. The new Sabbath album is decent but nothing more than a 3 for me. I haven't heard the new Darkthrone, apart from their really early stuff I'm not the biggest fan of them. I haven't got around to hearing the new FW album in its entirety but what I did hear of it didn't exactly blow me away. | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Can't wait to see your list, Key. | Keyblade
12.23.13 | Well MBV will be top 5 lol
I think it's amazing | guitarded_chuck
12.23.13 | "its funny how because no one has heard the majority of these albums everyone assumes its a great list."
lol yeah
i'm tempted to make a top 50 with the most obscure shit i can find just to see if everyone's like "omg feature-cool" | evilford

12.23.13 | Awesome list, might want to check some of these out. | Atari
12.23.13 | nice list man, lots of stuff on here I still need to check out though :/ | JamieTwort
12.23.13 | Thanks danny and Atari.
@Cap: Sweet dude, I'm sure you'll love Steeple seeing as you like Fain so much. Tidings is a bit different, it's a collection of the band's early singles put together with some experimental interludes, it's still excellent though. | Gnocchi
12.23.13 | Something tells me you would like Spacebong man. And if you liked The Fall of Every Season, try Eye Of Solitude : ) | Chortles

12.23.13 | waaay too mainstream :P | YankeeDudel
12.23.13 | jamie rules | JamieTwort

12.24.13 | Deep Magic also records as DJ/PURPLE/IMAGE, D/P/I, and Heat Wave. I think he also was in/did some stuff with Sun Araw and Pocahaunted too. | JamieTwort
