8 Albums For Night Driving

It seems the right time of year to go on long aimless drives through the city alone, to reflect or whatever. Or to drive into the city to escape cabin fever, or whatever. Anyway, although these albums are vastly different, I feel that they all fit nicely into the darker part of the day.
1Mogwai
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

These first 2 seem best suited for the arrival, at the beginning of the evening. Probably with a large group of people, to take the city by storm.
Hardcore Will Never Die... is Mogwai at their most driven. What I mean by that is that the songs exude this energy that feels young, and ready to take on the world, as opposed to the methodical and slow-building works of their previous material. Songs like Mexican Grand Prix, San Pedro, and George Square Thatcher Death Party seem as if they were made for the intro for some indie film that starts off hopeful, but inevitably leads to great introspection and sadness.

We Were Exploding Anyway

We Were Exploding... however, is severely bolstered with electronics, and that gives this album a great density of sound. This one feels like the drive up to a rave, like you're just about to get shoved into a pit of ecstasy and bodily fluid, but that's all you want, and it'll be blissful whenever you finally reach that cascade of light and many, many drugs.
3Beach House
Bloom

The next five are more suited for driving alone, and thinking about your life decisions.
Bloom feels like midnight near the end of summer of your senior year of high school. It makes you harken back to all the memories you made with your friends, enemies, acquaintances, etc. during the easiest, but most emotionally confusing time in your life. It's hopeful, but with a lining of regret for things you didn't do.
4Steely Dan
Aja

Aja is a more advanced nostalgia. It reflects upon an entire life, not just a snippet. Your life isn't filled with regret necessarily, but you still remember all the choices that impacted your life in a major way, and ruminate on how things might have been different. Aja is for the old man in all of us.
5 Sigur Ros
?g?tis Byrjun

This one feels like you're lost, perhaps you finally made your way out of a string of terrible circumstances that has left you jaded and unsure. But while you may have no direction, you know that things will get better, as long as you push on through the night.
6Bohren & Der Club Of Gore
Sunset Mission

Sunset Mission is for when you've just come down from that euphoric heroine high you've been searching for. Now you must wander the streets in search of the next one, never ceasing until either the goal is attained or your life is ended. You'll continue to spiral down this path until you're sharply woken up from this state, or you fade with the night.
7Rosetta
Wake/Lift

Wake/Lift feels as if but a few moments ago, you made the choice that will change your life forever. Perhaps murder, maybe your first drug deal, whatever it was, your world is now consumed in darkness, a suffocating one. You feel like the entirety of the universe is pressing down upon you. You keep remembering how well your life was going and how you can never have it again.
8Palms
Palms

This one is for the moments before darkness turns to dawn. Whatever may have been troubling you throughout the night, today is a new one, if you reach out to seize it, you can take control of your own destiny, and that's a hopeful thought. Make the most of what little daylight you may have, it could soon turn to blackness.
