| Brilliant Music - An Enlightened Precis
2013 has really been an awesome year for new music and journalistic cliches akin. So many fantastic artists that I listened to a lot but didn't make the list - Julia Holter, Entropia, The Knife, Ellende, Chelsea Wolfe, Wolvserpent, Sigur Ros, Russian Circles, Oranssi Pazuzu, Kvelertak, Yo La Tengo, Gris, Forest Swords, MBV, Loss of Self, Karnivool (hit and miss...), Tim Hecker, Wardruna, Night Heir (check them!!), Raspberry Bulbs, Rorcal, Dispirit (check them too!!), Cultes Des Ghoules, Echtra, Man's Gin, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba, Castevet, Ash Borer (come on, they only put out two songs)... also I missed out the spiritual stuff like Halo Manash and Fell Voices (which ruled, by the way - haters just want cheap kicks, massage your chakras and transcend, brothers!), because... well, I guess I just don't know how to rate that against more conventional "pleasure music". But here goes. All egotism is and was both sarcastic and self-depreciating, and I hope this list adds a little to the internet's glorious end-of-year overlooked music quest. | 10 | | Vattnet Viskar Sky Swallower
A blend of earthy USBM with Worm Ouroboros-style doom lines (Apex, 2:07) and post-rock climaxes - albeit a little too concise/compact/condensed to wind up higher. "White Tomb without the space". | 9 | | Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Push the Sky Away
It took many an impulsive re-listen before I realised how good this was - I'm lauding it as Nick Cave's magnum opus. The ambience and soft production are gorgeous. | 8 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
By now this is a cultural phenomenon, and of course Sunbather packs many of 2013's greatest musical moments - the euphoric build-climax of Vertigo (you know it's coming, you know it's cliche, and it's still probably the musical highlight of the year), the triumphant leads half way into Sunbather, all of The Pelican Tree. If I was less into bleak and they'd cut out that ridiculous solo in Vertigo, this would have been higher up my list for sure. I'm really interested to see what effects the Sunbather craze will have on BM. | 7 | | Skagos Anarchic
This would have been top most other years, I still haven't heard it enough - nature-y USBM with long ambient sections (Side B) that are painful and mature in a way Sunbather strives for at times but never achieves. | 6 | | Jon Hopkins Immunity
Lose yourself, kid. | 5 | | Ruined Families Blank Language
Furious, well-written, passionate - a perfectly balanced (punk-heavy) blend of black metal and hardcore. | 4 | | Altar of Plagues Teethed Glory and Injury
Innovative, unsettling, claustrophobic, dense, but never abrasive or discomforting. I love this album so much. | 3 | | Ulver Messe I.X-VI.X
This stands on a little podium reserved only for Ulver in my mind. Probably the best album of the year, but I need to listen to it more. | 2 | | The Haxan Cloak Excavation
Just drown. | 1 | | Vali Skogslandskap
The most enchanting collection of music I've ever heard. | |
