iTokoloshe's 25 Of 2009

The 25 metal albums that ripped me a new one in 2009. These are in no particular order.
1Arch Enemy
The Root of All Evil

Angela Gossow's take on the classic Arch Enemy songs, more brutal than ever
2Architects
Hollow Crown

Leading the pack in the UK metal scene, another cracker from Architects
3Asking Alexandria
Stand Up and Scream

Really good blend of breakdowns, riffage, shredding and electronics
4Baroness
Blue Record

Beautifully crafted, sludgy and mesmerising. These guys are building an impressive catalog of great music
5Bleed From Within
Humanity

The boys from up North punch you in the throat with an awesome debut album
6Bury Tomorrow
Portraits

Another young British band with some great breakdowns and fantastic rhythms
7Chimaira
The Infection

Chimaira's most balanced and consistent album. All 6 members of the band shine on this scorcher
8Daath
The Concealers

Technical wizardry
9DevilDriver
Pray for Villains

Dez and the boys really hit their stride on this album, great momenets throughout this album, groovier than the 60's
10 Dividing the Line
At Least It's Not Light

Great balance of melody, electronics and hardcore
11Every Time I Die
New Junk Aesthetic

The Buffalo lads hit the spot yet again, ferocius and hilarious at the same time
12Gallows
Grey Britain

"I know where you live"
13Exodus
Let There Be Blood

Great re-recordings of a classic album. Should classics be re-recorded? Depends on the reasons. In this case, it benefits from the improved production quality. Rob Dukes is no Paul Baloff, but still puts out a great performance
14Hatebreed
Hatebreed

Jamey and his crew are on fire with this album. Stronger song composition, aggression to the extreme and great lyrics. The music to punch through walls with
15Incite
The Slaughter

I saw these guys live and was super impressed, they manage to capture their stage performance well on this debut. Ritchie Cavalera continues the Cavalera trend for bloody nosed albums
16Lacuna Coil
Shallow Life

Cleaner production than their past albums, but slightly more commercial songs. Cristina is still amazing though
17Lamb of God
Wrath

Randy and the LoG team provide another uppercut with this album, great stuff. Groovy, fast, angry classic
18Mastodon
Crack the Skye

The most psychedelic album out there. Great use of three vocalists, powerful suffocating riffs and complex composition
19Obituary
Darkest Day

Florida death metal legends with a great death metal album
20Sacred Mother Tongue
The Ruin of Man

Shredding
21Slayer
World Painted Blood

SLAYER!
22The Arusha Accord
The Echo Verses

Two vocalists providing great variety in the vocals, the way they work together is similar to two lead guitarists shredding away
23The Black Dahlia Murder
Deflorate

Attacks you from all sides, sounds like Trevor Strnad has multiple personalities with each of his different growls/shouts/screams/grunts
24Wolfmother
Cosmic Egg

Lez Zeppelin reincarnated in the 21st century with some Aussie style thrown in
25Xerath
Xerath I

Epic landscape for some crushing metalcore
