10.28.13 | Tried to keep this pre-1980 before thrash and all that. So Void, Napalm Death and stuff like that wont be in here. Also Manowar (viking metal influence) were 1980 formed I think so outside this. |

10.28.13 | great list inb4 feature |

10.28.13 | "Sweet list, although somehow I knew all of this already haha."
Thanks, yes nothing very obscure in there.
If you look at stuff after 1980 when many metal subgenres happen then it explodes a bit and all sorts of obscure stuff could be mentioned (thats why I didnt do post 1980 too much work haha) |
manosg
10.28.13 | This is an awesome list right here. I'll throw some names for consideration and you tell me:
Saxon
Blue Oyster Cult
Budgie [2]
Scorpions
Whitesnake |
manosg
10.28.13 | Also, Alice Cooper. How did I forget about him? |
menawati
10.28.13 | thanks mano, considered most of those especially alice for influencing glam probably should have him in there, scorpions is a good shout too |
menawati
10.28.13 | didnt want to blithely just put all the most well known 70s metal acts, was trying to think of how influential they were |
SgtPepper
10.28.13 | Nice list, Mena. A lot of good stuff here. I'd put Sir Lord Baltimore in here as well. They were short-lived, but pretty heavy and even toured with Sabbath in the '70s.
Anyone interested in checking them out here:

10.28.13 | Nice list, mena.
I remember Notrap did a list like this some time ago but focused purely on metal's early influences and the foundations of the genre such as the first few albums on this list. |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.13 | Good list but you miss some important bands like Mountain and Sir Lord Baltimore. Also, I would
replace Zeppelin's HoTH for with their second album.
A nice effort anyways.... |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.13 | Damn, this list reminded me some good stuff I wanna dig. I have heard everything this list mentions except for 1,2,9 and 30. |
menawati
10.28.13 | "replace Zeppelin's HoTH for with their second "
didnt really think much about the albums I chose but HotH is ok I spose because it had the funk in it, Mountain and Baltimore are indeed good calls though |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.13 | "didnt really think much about the albums I chose but HotH is ok I spose because it had the funk in it"
I'm pretty sure you did just that, I'm only saying that LZ II was more influential (for Metal) because it was a more guitar driven and riff-oriented album. |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.13 | I would also recommend you to listen to Link Wray. One of the first guitarists who relied exclusively in the power chord. |
menawati
10.28.13 | yes you're right, i couldnt be assed to check on sput whether someone had entered Led Zeppelin 2 or II tho when i typed in the album |
Friday13th
10.28.13 | King Crimson just based on Schizoid Man's laurels. How about Cromagnon? I found the song "Caledonia" on some rateyourmusic list and that is some insane proto-metal. |

rockandmetaljunkie
10.29.13 | I think you'll love 4 Nag. |
VinVal
10.30.13 | the beatles' "helter skelter" was one of the first "Hard rock" songs ever recorded, i'm sure the appeal had some influence on the genre. Cool list, I always wanted know if Kiss' facepaint and general attire had an influence on the early BM bands |
pjquinones747
10.30.13 | Master list is master list |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.30.13 | "Kiss' facepaint and general attire had an influence on the early BM bands"
The attire as well as the whole concept of their lives surely had an impact on the Shock Rock genre, if such a musical field exists. |
pyroflare77
10.30.13 | No Flower Travellin' Band? |
MO
10.30.13 | great list dude |
SCREAM!
10.31.13 | Pretty good list but I was one major gripe:
"Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
The first true metal band. The blues has been all squeezed out."
The blues influence in Iommi's guitar work (especially a lot of his solos) is HUGE. No way did Sabbath squeeze the blues out. They just took the bluesy, hard rock formula and made it sound a lot more sinister. I'd say Priest is where the jazz/blues influences pretty much disappeared (disregarding the fact that basically every rock band is an evolution of blues) |
SCREAM!
10.31.13 | wow, I have one major gripe* |
menawati
10.31.13 | ok SCREAM, obviously blues based guitarists influenced Iommi and he used the blues scale but I stand by my statement, he played in fifths much more and he did that tritone thing and the music took on a much darker edge |
Drpibb
11.01.13 | where's budgie?! |
