| Objectively Greatest British Bands Ever
I will try to rank on an objective way the best rever British band (no solo artists) using the rfollowing criteria: 1 Commercial impact 2 Musical rand Critical Impact 3 Cultural Impact. The list rDOES NOT reflect my personal tasterNote: On prog rock bands here (Genesis, Yes, rJethro Tull...), all of them pretty great, dont rforget the awful opinion most critics had and runfortunately still have on them | 1 | The Beatles
Huge sales, impact, acclaim, everything. Dominated the 60s like no other band
dominated a decade... Influence on countless artists. Cannot be objectively
discussed as the 1st | 2 | Pink Floyd
Huge sales, big tours, a lot of influence and acclaim. It is difficult to make a
undeniable masterpiece, these guys made 3. | 3 | Led Zeppelin
They owned the transition from th 60s to th 70s, although they would let down
after Physical Graffiti. The big fathers of Heavy Metal (not the only, but the
biggest). Huge sales, influence, everything, the numbers are on their side. | 4 | Rolling Stones
They have been around since the 60s, although they are mostly famed from the
first 2 decades. Big sales, huge touring act, they created and lived through the
greatest rock n roll band moniker for a long time | 5 | The Who
Forfathers of punk, rock operas and even britpop: hugely influential. Very good
sales, and some undeniable masterpieces. Probably on top 3 live acts ever | 6 | Queen
Never favourites of the critics, but these guys have tons of influence (just
look at
acts past the 80s that mention their inspiration), have huge sales and tour and
they were consistently on top through the 70s and the 80s (alhtough better in
the
70s). Even my grandmother knew them | 7 | Black Sabbath
Probably the main influence on a lot of heavy metal, their run until 1975 is
faboulous (1980s heaven and hell is great as well). they had awesome riffs,
great
lyrics, a great sound and pretty good sales. If a guy likes just a little bit of
metal he
HAS to like them... Heavy metal would be a different thing without them | 8 | The Clash
They lasted for 6 years (not counting Cut the Crap, otherwise their rating
falls),
but during those years they were untouchable, and made songs in every style
possible from their original punk, to ska, 50s rock, reagge, etc. London Calling
is
considered by pretty much every reliable critic had a landmark album, and the
other
albums are good as well. They were the greatest british punk act (yes, greater
than Sex Pistols) | 9 | The Police
Before Sting's ego took the better hand, they were during 5 years one of the top
5
singles act ever, and all their albums are pretty good - critics like them, the
public
liked them, and their songs have stood the test of time. they could have lasted
for
long, but they broke up when they were one of the biggest and best bands in the
world | 10 | Cream
Yes, not a long time together - but hard rock probably started with them, and
they
mixed it with psycadelia and blues in a very acclaimed combination. The 3
players in
the band were incredible at what they did. The albums sold reasonably, and the
band members (especially Clapton) would go on to good solo careers. Tons of
influence for such a small amount of time together | 11 | Radiohead | 12 | The Kinks | 13 | Iron Maiden | 14 | Deep Purple | 15 | Roxy Music | 16 | Coldplay | 17 | The Cure | 18 | The Smiths | 19 | Oasis | 20 | Sex Pistols | 21 | Judas Priest | 22 | Genesis | 23 | Yes | 24 | King Crimson | 25 | Blur | 26 | Depeche Mode | 27 | Jethro Tull | 28 | Def Leppard | 29 | Joy Division + New Order | 30 | Dire Straits | |
Trebor.

06.04.13 | smiths influenced every single indie rock band including coldplay so yeah

| NeroCorleone80
06.04.13 | Coldplay above Priest, Genesis, Yes and Jethro lol | GnarlyShillelagh
06.04.13 | 1 is awful let's be real | Trebor.
06.04.13 | you put way too much merit on album sales which means jack shit | GnarlyShillelagh
06.04.13 | stones are worse tho at least the beatles were the most influential niggas ever | Thane
06.04.13 | king crimson | NeroCorleone80
06.04.13 | ^ Yeah where the hell are they on here!?!?!? | AlbertoCunha
06.04.13 | yeah i knew coldplay would take a beating but they had a combination of sales and acceptance by
critics only surprassed in uk bands by radiohead since 2000. sales are not everything, otherside take
that or some shit like that would be here, byt they gotta count | bach
06.04.13 | Coldplay isn't that bad treb.... | demigod!
06.04.13 | Coldplay rules | Trebor.
06.04.13 | fucking rolling stone magazine mentality about music, no soul | Artuma
06.04.13 | not bad at all but Coldplay and Muse? | bach
06.04.13 | lol Rolling Stone magazine and music in the same sentence. | bach
06.04.13 | Muse is poopy imo tbh | ViralOblivion
06.04.13 | Coldplay lol | AlbertoCunha
06.04.13 | i have to confess you guys probably have a point with King Crimson. Not that it matters for an
objective list, but i have to confess i haven't heard anything from them except (naturally) "in the
court of the crimson king". any recommendation for their other albums? | Trebor.
06.04.13 | coldplay is a saltless saltine cracker that is also wet | ViralOblivion
06.04.13 | They're a shitty Radiohead clone | Trebor.
06.04.13 | without the talent originality or flavor or good singer or good guitarists or good drummer or good bassist yes exactly
| NeroCorleone80
06.04.13 | "any recommendation for their other albums?"
Any of their first 8 albums | ViralOblivion
06.04.13 | Agreed Trebor | ViralOblivion
06.04.13 | And yea muse sucks | StallionMang
06.04.13 | Blur should be way higher. | HolidayKirk
06.04.13 | Good list, blur should always be higher. | AlbertoCunha
06.04.13 | I could see Blur up to around the 20th place yes (and on a personal note i really like them). After
the 12th place or so a list that tries to be objective is, no doubt, much more disputable | wacknizzle
06.04.13 | King Crimson [2]
First band I looked for honestly because I pretty much knew what else to expect. | AlbertoCunha
06.04.13 | I will include them when i revise it. Its an objective list, and if an argument makes sense, great :) as i said, i dont know (so far, i will work on that) anything apart from the debut which is pretty good indeed, but they objectively make the list | tommygun
06.04.13 | OBJECTIVE | AlbertoCunha
06.05.13 | Floyd higher than other prog acts... well thats kind of obvious on an objective list with the criteria
i stated sorry... same for the beatles as 1.
I didnt base crimson up on the opinions of others, i honestly (my bad) hadn't really considered them
for the list, and when it was mention i did some research and they get in, especially considering the
huge musical and critical impact of the debut | AlbertoCunha
06.05.13 | i tried to make it objective, and i not only followed the criteria (i actually have the criteria
rating for all the bands, just didnt put them in because thats just boring) and i think its pretty
diverse... and
in no way this reflects my personal taste. i think that makes it objective, or at the very least a
good shot at that | AlbertoCunha
06.05.13 | ah and muse got out when crimson entered... bowie is not a band | NordicMindset
06.07.13 | 1 shouldn't be 1. sorry. 2 should be 1, and Muse > Coldplay | Zeneren
06.07.13 | Lol at some of the bands over Yes | youpi
06.07.13 | even if Muse > Coldplay (and I disagree on that point), Muse rips off Radiohead way too much to be taken seriously. |
