|"mainstream music (ugh i fucking hate that term) used to be pretty damn good"|
yeah, this basically
|If anything I would say that the the term "Mainstream" has become much broader. When I was a kid it was whatever was played on the radio and MTV a lot. In my late teens and early twenties cable companies began to diversify via technology and were able to pick up additional music channels e.g. Vh1 Much Music. About that time more specialized radio stations came to life (similar to the problem cable channels are facing now). Fast forward to now and you have |
personal music streaming,
Dozens of commercial streaming services (free internet radio, pay services)
Cars accept mini DBs in the form of a flash drive,
portable music players,
etc. etc. etc.
This doesn't even begin to go into the number of outlets to find new music.
New music used to be what you heard on the radio for the first time or what you could find/be recommended at your local independent record store or from friends. Now there are dozens of do it yourself shops and indie labels selling direct to the public via their website.
Yes I would say that mainstream is very different than it was even 10 years ago. I personally find that to be a good thing because I can't stand listening to the same songs Ad nauseam as was the case of my childhood.
My father had the first outrageously large record/reel 2 reel/CD collection I had ever seen and he would make cases upon cases of his own mixed tapes or rearranged albums. I think he would agree that the quality of choices for personal music listening habits has become awesome.
That too is going to have a dramatic effect on what could be considered mainstream.
