05.03.13 | does anyone except scene kids even think 2 is great? agreed about 5 |
YoYoMancuso
05.03.13 | disagree with 3, although I preferred Jeff's soloing |
MeatSalad
05.03.13 | This is the first time ive seen slash mentioned in several years |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.03.13 | I agree with 1,3,5.
I've never heard 2 or 4. |
bloc
05.03.13 | Tbh, Slayer solos are usually nonsense. They fit with the band's songs, but in any other thrash they would get old fast. |
MeatSalad
05.03.13 | same could be said about metallica |
theacademy
05.03.13 | list needs more hendrix and less synsyster gates |
Necrotica
05.03.13 | I agree with 1, 3, and 4 |
mandan
05.04.13 | @theacademy: I really don't think Hendrix was a bad guitarist, though I don't think he was the all-time best. |
MikeC26
05.04.13 | If you think hendrix is overrated your ignorant about the history of electric guitar. Plain and simple. |
MikeC26
05.04.13 | Nobody is or ever will be better than Hendrix. Jimmy Page is the only dude who comes remotely close |
SupercolliderMusic
05.04.13 | Most underrated guitarist... Jonny Greenwood |
Devastator
05.04.13 | Hendrix makes all of these guys look like idiots. |
beefshoes
05.04.13 | Jimmy Page is overrated imo.
He's versatile and distinctive, but I prefer Steve Howe. |
beefshoes
05.04.13 | And note that by saying something is overrated doesn't mean they suck, it only means they're overrated. 4 is the only one I'd go as far as saying actually sucks. |
Devastator
05.04.13 | @FourthReich Ya man I haven't been posting a lot recently. This though was a list that needed my input! |
JamieTwort
05.04.13 | "Jimmy Page is overrated imo."
Yeah I've always thought Page is slightly overrated too. Still an excellent guitarist, don't get me wrong, but he's nowhere near the greatest of all time like a lot of people seem to proclaim. |
JamieTwort
05.04.13 | All 5 of these are fairly overrated I guess. Although I don't think 4 gets that much praise anyway and he's not terrible. |
DrGonzo1937
05.04.13 | I agree with this a lot. Fucking Slash... |
NightProwler
05.04.13 | Fucking love Page. |
DrGonzo1937
05.04.13 | Page is the man. |
Zeneren
05.04.13 | Page is overrated yeah |
manosg
05.04.13 | I don't think any of those is perceived as an all-time great by knowledgeable people. Just to add another point to the discussion; apart from technique we always have to bear in mind how good of a composer is someone. |
mandan
05.04.13 | I like and respect Page, but I think Blackmore owned him when it came to soloing. |
ChuckyTruant
05.04.13 | i agree |

05.04.13 | "I like and respect Page, but I think Blackmore owned him when it came to soloing."
Yeah, without a doubt. |

05.04.13 | "Yeah I've always thought Page is slightly overrated too. Still an excellent guitarist, don't get me wrong, but he's nowhere near the greatest of all time like a lot of people seem to proclaim."
how would you define a great guitar player? |
JamieTwort
05.04.13 | Jimmy Page is basically the definition of a 'great' guitarist for me. He's versatile (to an extent), composes good solos and has a knack for coming up with great riffs but that's as far as it goes. I've already said he's an excellent guitarist, I'm not denying that. A special guitarist, i.e. one that I consider to be one of the all time greats, manages to have all the above talents but with the addition of the ability to convey emotion through their playing and at the same time have a distinctive style or sound all of their own. This is just my opinion of course but Page has never given me chills like a lot of my favourite guitarists have. Also he's sometimes rather sloppy when playing live (based on live recordings). |

05.29.13 | List has slash therefore list rules. |
ncguitar
05.29.13 | It's funny how guitar players who say he sucks, are...shit x).And guitar players who are good say he is good.I mean, c'mon- Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold and Jack White from The White Stripes say that Slash is his biggest influence.Slash gave Guns N' Roses(who sold 100 million records with 6 years worth of material, something that no band has done) its distinctive hard rock sound that is hardcore-blues rock n' roll.He plays with PASSION and its the SOUND and HOW MEMORABLE the playing is. |
InbredJed
12.26.13 | Wow, k GnR sucked, Slash is a moderatly talented guitarist and a mediocre songwriter at best, so get off his dick, boyo. |
manosg
12.26.13 | "Slash gave Guns N' Roses its distinctive hard rock sound"
Actually it was more Izzy Stradlin than Slash who shaped GnR sound. Izzy wrote more stuff but at the same time he wanted to be out of the spotlight whereas Slash's image was what the audience sought for at the time. |
InbredJed
12.26.13 | Yee, Manosg with the truth-bomb! |
SitarHero
12.26.13 | Woah. Izzy, was a terribly underrated songwriter and probably GnR's ace in the hole, but saying one or the other "shaped GnR's sound" is far from the truth.
Those cats were practically telepathic in the way they riffed and always playing around each other. They created GnR's original sound TOGETHER. |
hikingmetalpunk
12.26.13 | slashtastic list |
JamieTwort
12.26.13 | Slash is overrated but GnR ruled. |
zakalwe
12.26.13 | No, they really were shit. |
JamieTwort
12.26.13 | No they weren't. If you hate hard rock that's actually good fun then maybe yeah. |
zakalwe
12.26.13 | Hard rock rules. GnR were overblown LA cocaine nonsense. Although they did do some good tunes. |
JamieTwort
12.26.13 | They weren't overblown until the Use Your Illusion albums. Appetite is just straight up hard rock, it's hardly overblown. |
SitarHero
12.26.13 | "GnR were overblown LA cocaine nonsense."
This is the sputnik equivalent of valley-girl speak. "Like, GnR are sooooo lame. Ohmagawd". |
zakalwe
12.26.13 | But them illusion albums put everything else to ridicule such is there overwhelming overblowness. |
JamieTwort
12.26.13 | I dunno about that, there's still some great tracks on those albums. There's even some straight up rockers that wouldn't have sounded out of place on Appetite. |
zakalwe
12.26.13 | Perfect crime, could be mine. Yep yep your bringing me round JT! |
ResidentNihilist
12.26.13 | Chuck Schuldiner; excellent guitar player with some great chops but seems to have fallen into the old adage of his death amplifying his work beyond the stratosphere into realms where he's untouchable which isn't true. Great guitar player but far from the best.
Dave Mustaine; Excellent and influential guitar player but again there are far better. |
demigod!
12.26.13 | agreed about Dave, Marty is pretty much what made Rust so amazing and is the reason why it's so much better than their other records. |
Underflow
12.26.13 | Al di Meola is unbelievably good. |
rockandmetaljunkie
12.26.13 | AFD is the only worthy GNR album. Every great track on UYI's (such as November Rain, Don't Cry, The Garden, Back Off Bitch) were written during the recording sessions of AFD or before. |
rockandmetaljunkie
12.26.13 | "Actually it was more Izzy Stradlin than Slash who shaped GnR sound."
Manos is right. |
InbredJed
12.26.13 | Marty played on Rust?
I thought that was Chris Poland |
Amphoteric
12.26.13 | 3 would be 1 on my list, though Slash would be a close 2nd |
SitarHero
12.26.13 | "AFD is the only worthy GNR album."
True, but only because Axl's ego got large enough for him to think EVERY thing he wrote was worthy of being on an album. The best cuts on the UYIs would've been enough for one great album rather than two inconsistent ones.
Don't damn me is the muhfuggin jam! |
UnnamedOcean
12.26.13 | "Most underrated guitarist... Jonny Greenwood"
I wouldn't say underrated, just not well-known.
Personally I prefer Ed O'Brien. |
MikeC26
12.26.13 | Marty Friedman played on Rust and Poland played on Peace Sells
|
MoosechriS
12.26.13 | not a guitarist myself, but fuck me kerry king is shite. Jeff carried his ass for years. |
DominionMM1
12.26.13 | "Marty is pretty much what made Rust so amazing and is the reason why it's so much better than their other records."
i'd say dave's songwriting had something to do with it. i mean yeah marty's solos on that record are like the best thing ever but it's not like the leads MADE that album.

That's saying a lot |

12.26.13 | page stole his style and his licks from other much better guitarists so i have to agree with whoever brought him up. hendrix, nah he gave a lot to psychedelic music. |
MikeC26
12.26.13 | Okay page stole a lot of shit but his riffs speak for themselves |
