| 12 Bands I've Found My Love For In The Past Year
The growth in my musical journey has been insane in rrthe past year, so I rthought I'd make a list of the rbest bands I've rdiscovered and/or realized my rlove rfor in the past year. | 1 | Pink Floyd
I had always heard they were one of the greatest bands of all time. And I really
liked the
song "Time". But in the past year, I discovered why some people consider Pink Floyd
the greatest
band ever. That album stretch from Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall (and I
quite like The
Final Cut even) is some of the greatest musical work ever. | 2 | Genesis
Tool has been my favorite band for a long time, and I had never really bothered
to check
out the bands they say influenced them. I decided to, and discovered Genesis.
Old Genesis.
Nursery Cryme - A Trick of the Tail, another amazing stretch of albums. "The
Musical Box"
will forever have a place in my heart as the song that truly got me into Prog. | 3 | Led Zeppelin
Always heard them, thought they were just one of those "classic" bands that
everyone
overrated. I was wrong. Led Zeppelin is fantastic, influential, and just... well
there's not
much that has not already been said. | 4 | Opeth
It took a while for them to grow on me. But damn. One of the most diverse,
unlikely
mixtures of style, and they make it work. Mikael Akerfeldt is an unfairly
talented musician.
Been obsessed with these guys since I discovered them. | 5 | Porcupine Tree
Many fans of Opeth are bound to stumble upon PT eventually. I'm glad I did. They
are
much easier to listen to than most prog, which is a nice change of pace. | 6 | Slipknot
Way out of the way of pretty much everything else on this list. Yes. I like
Slipknot,
they're immature, have 394568 members, and I don't care. Sometimes it's nice to
just
mindlessly headbang and scream your head off about nothing in particular. I
don't care
what people say about Slipknot, it's about the music, and I like this music. | 7 | Yes
Not done yet with all of the classic Prog rock bands. Yes has one of the
weirdest, most
original sounds I've heard in a long time. They may have their pretentious
moments,
maybe a little more than some other progressive rock bands, but I can enjoy a
lot of
their stuff, especially their early 70's stuff. They're good if you have some
time to sit
back and just soak in a nice long adventure of a song. | 8 | The Dear Hunter
I may be in the honeymoon stage with this band. I only discovered them maybe a
month ago, but wow I fell in love. The hype leading up tot he release of Migrant
is
what caught my attention. And just wow, what a lucky find, because these guys
are
not very popular, for some reason. There's just nothing I dislike about this
music. It
can be upbeat and happier sounding, or melancholy, or silly. I could see The
Dear
Hunter becoming one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. | 9 | King Crimson
It's hard for me to truly love King Crimson. They have masterpieces, but they
venture
to full blown experimental sometimes that I just can't enjoy listening to, and
really
lowers the quality of their good albums. Songs like Moonchild and Providence
just really
bug me. But that's not to say I don't like King Crimson overall, obviously
they're on this
list because they're awesome. | 10 | Queens of the Stone Age
I borrowed Songs For The Deaf from a family member out of curiosity because I
heard
Dave Grohl had been doing some stuff with them, and it turns out they're as good
as any
other band Dave Grohl has been associated with. Song For The Deaf is a fantastic
album,
and Rated R is pretty good, and while I have't necessarily listened to every
song of theirs,
I really do like them, and I can't wait for their new album. | 11 | Red Hot Chili Peppers
Like Led Zeppelin, this is another band I never really gave a chance to. After
listening to,
and getting to know Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I was hooked. Easy to listen to,
though
sometimes annoying, just good. | 12 | Soundgarden
Aside from Pearl Jam, I was never into grunge. Soundgarden is very similar to
Pearl Jam, so
it was easy for me to get into them, and I'm glad I did. | |
