Metals Best Of 2007!

Holy fuck was this list hard to make this year. There were so many great albums that I will give honorable mentions to the following bands before I countdown from 1-10 of my favourites from this year. Honorable mentions include: Dimmu Borgir, Machine Head, Marduk, Ministry, The Red Chord, and Sigh.
1Neurosis
Given to the Rising

The most powerful album this year that simply destroyed any other metal release. The combination of old and new trait sounds from this legendary band are combined into one dark piece of metal. Salute!
2Moonsorrow
V: Havitetty

This was one of the late albums I purchased this year and therefore almost got overlooked. Sprawling, epic songs that create images of Viking battles on land or at sea. Two songs that are 26 minutes each make this a very enthralling listen.
3Dark Tranquillity
Fiction

If you do not have this on your list for 2007, I feel sorry for you. Easily the best album to come out of the Gothenburg scene since their last album Character.
4Porcupine Tree
Fear of a Blank Planet

Technically, this isn't metal. This is the best metal influenced, progressive rock album to come out this year though. Combine great musicianship with a immense concept on social issues and this makes for a very fascinating listen
5Minsk
The Ritual Fires of Abandonment

One of the most overlooked releases this year, people will be very surprised upon first listen to these tribal, sludgy metal geniuses. Highly, highly recommended if you enjoyed Neurosis newest offering.
6Baroness
Red Album

These guys appeared out of nowhere and have secured a place on my top 10 for this year. Psychedelic metal jams mixed with the thunderous roar of Mastodon; how can you go wrong?
7Ensiferum
Victory Songs

A fun listen if you are into the whole Viking metal scene. Intricate melodies are mixed over galloping rhythm sections and topped off with lyrics as corny as the whole Viking metal scene itself. Still, what a fun listen!
8Between the Buried and Me
Colors

First off, I hated BTBAM's previous albums that were a mess with stupid breakdowns and really irregular melodies that simply didn't work together. Nothing has really changed on this album except for the fact that they made all of these oddball influences come together into one cohesive album. These guys are on to something good now!
9The Absence
Riders of the Plague

Best thrash metal I've heard in a while. This album has all of the key thrash metal ingredients and does it with some originality.
10Devildriver
The Last Kind Words

Most improved band and best straight up metal album of the year are reasons why this made my top 10. Huge leads and solos, great vocals and lyrics, and an amazing rhythm section only means good things for this band in the future.
